His recent community and teaching assignments have taken place inPalestine, Israel, Kurdistan (Iraq), Sri Lanka, Denmark, Spain, Austria, Thailandand a range of Aboriginal communitiesDAY TWO Thursday 5th Sept 2013EXPLORING THE ART OF HEALING: LINKING NARRATIVE AND ARTISTIC PRACTICE In his work with individuals, groups and communities, <str<strong>on</strong>g>David</str<strong>on</strong>g> utilises the latest thinking in relati<strong>on</strong> <strong>to</strong> narrative therapy/collective narrative practice in c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong> with the written word, s<strong>on</strong>g, visual arts and theatre. This workshop will resp<strong>on</strong>d <strong>to</strong> the following questi<strong>on</strong>s:· How can we bridge the fields of therapy, community work and the arts?· How can we use folk culture as the starting point for our practice?· How can we enable people <strong>to</strong> ‘perform’ their preferred s<strong>to</strong>ries?· How can we transform anguish <strong>to</strong> art <strong>to</strong> social c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>? · How can we develop ways of working therapeutically that have aesthetic and artistic merit?· What can the arts offer <strong>to</strong> those of us who are receiving and resp<strong>on</strong>ding <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ries of social suffering? This workshop will provide practical examples of ways of working with individuals, groups and communities including:· written documentati<strong>on</strong>· s<strong>on</strong>gs of sustenance· narrative arts therapy practices such as the Kite of Life· forms of narrative theatre such as Sundowner, a collaborati<strong>on</strong> with Alzheimers’ Australia and KAGE Physical Theatre that is <strong>to</strong>uring nati<strong>on</strong>ally in 2013, and the Team of Life which is <strong>to</strong> feature in the 2014 Melbourne Festival. Please note, <str<strong>on</strong>g>David</str<strong>on</strong>g> says it is not necessary <strong>to</strong> have ‘artistic talent’ <strong>to</strong> practice artistically.
