FeaturesDateline: 1982By Verniño Gutierrez. While I try to find the words to wax eloquence on theevents leading to the shaping up of a nation during these periloustimes in Philippine history one can not forget the bigger picture inthe international scene. Like the time when the British overcameArgentina over the Falkland war or when Israel invaded Lebanonin retaliation to a PLO backed air raid. But what are these facts tome back then. We have our own dilemma to face. The fetid air ofunbroken spirits in a nation lorded over by the military remainsstead fast in its cry for freedom. Freedom best expressed by theyouth of our nation through the celebration of the arts, used as amedium to convey free speech.Who would forget the award-winning movie, Virgin Forest, directed by Peque Gallaga and written by Uro dela Cruz froma story by T.E. Pagaspas. It speaks of a friendship and brotherhoodgiven freely and wholeheartedly by one, abused and befouledby the other. Think of it in the context of RP-US relation, its debauchery, foulness, one sided love affair and you will get the wholepicture. But what makes us Filipinos what we are, is our capacityto laugh in the face of great adversity. Such is the dynamism ofthis era’s creative mind. In the words of a telecommunicationscompany: simply amazing!I beg for your indulgence as I try to act like a Filipino andlook back to the year that was 1982 and all the good things aroundthe globe that goes along with it. Please hold my hand (or anotherpersons if you prefer it that way) as we stroll down memory lane.Who among us could ever forget the evolution of the gaming platform?Ah…let me refresh your memory. Back in the day if youhave a game and watch horde of kids would surely flock on you.And then the game and watch evolved into something sweeter. Adouble screened game and watch has become a great amusement.I love swapping games with kids from school with dualscreened game and watch. But it has also evolved into Atari, the family computer andthen the personal computer in the last quarter of the 1980’s. I wasalways wary of touching the PC back then because my uncle wouldalways tell me to be careful with it because it was very sensitiveand very expensive. But in 1982, Jim Butterfield of Ontario, Canadahas already predicted that it would get more powerful and cheaperin the future. True indeed because no sooner had I bought my firstPentium II computer in 1997 that it dropped its value 2 monthslater because of the Pentium III kudos, Mr. Butterfield. And least we forget the controversial organization withinthe Roman Catholic faith. Vilified in the movies like Dan Brown’sDa Vinci Code, the Opus Dei received the final approval as a personalprelature by the Vatican in 1982. “When Opus Dei came intobeing there was no vehicle in Church law for an organization thatincluded lay people, married and single, men and women, of allsocial backgrounds, of all nations, who wanted to commit themselvesto God in answer to a vocation, but without, for example, changing their lay status, or leaving the world, or taking public orprivate vows, or donning a religious habit. Yet, for many reasons,Opus Dei had to be fitted in somewhere if it was to grow and developin theChurchand inthe world. This conundrum waseventually solved by the juridicalentity called the personal prelature, and when Opus Dei was establishedas such it could clearly be seen tobe part of the jurisdictional hierarchyof the Church. This was onceagain confirmed in January 1991 by the episcopal ordination of itsPrelate. Until this entity became available however, Opus Dei, touse a metaphor, had to wear a variety of poorly-fitting juridicalgarments.”(source:www.uap.edu.ph/opusdei/opusdei_chapter5.html)As a person who loves the arts let us refresh our memories withthe sounds and sights that helped define 1982. Who would everforget when Michael Jackson released thriller, which sold morethan 25 million copies, becoming the biggest selling album in history.Smitten by Drew Barrymore’s beauty? Who would have thoughtthat she was the same cute girl in the 1982 hit movie E.T. (extraterrestrial).Someof the movies released on the same year areTootsie, Gandhi, The Verdict, and Chariots of Fire.If music is your cup of tea then you might care to knowthat Broadways longest running play “Cats” opened in October of1982 with 7,485 performances to date. Grammy’s record of theyear is “Bette Davies Eyes” (Kim Carnes), Album of the year “DoubleFantasy” (John Lenon and Yoko Ono), song of the year “BetteDavies Eyes” by songwriters Donna Weiss and Jackie De Shannon. Also note worthy is Nobel prize for literature winner GabrielGarcia Marquez and for the first time a permanent artificial heart isimplanted in a human for the first time by Dr. Barney B. Clark, 61,at the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Why this accolade for the year 1982? It is because we arecommemorating the Silver Jubilee of batch ’82 of De La SalleUniversity-Dasmariñas. We toast in their honor to show our deepestrespect and hopes that they have not forgotten the institutionof higher learning that had helped them realize their full potentialin the society. We cheer for the good times long gone but neverforgotten, etched in the hallways and by ways of this our greatuniversity. We pray that they do not forget the values instilled inthem and that they share it like a beacon of light in their communities. As I always say after every zen like moments of my bike runs…itis not how long the distance that you’ve traveled, it’s how you enjoyedthe ride! Maligayang pagbabalik sa De La Salle University-Dasmariñas!10 Verdeng Verde

FeaturesE P I T A C I OBy Michael Garcia (Alumni Scholar)Pete with wife Bing and daugther IleanaMy face a picture of torment, disturbing thoughts of what couldbe laced with bewildered excitement, when the appointed time forour rendezvous with this person finally arrived.Mr. Vicente Epitacio Mendiola Jr. is a graduate of Bachelor ofArts major in Psychology batch 1996 has always been an epitomeof a good “alumnus”, a man who practices Lasallian values insideand outside the premises of the University. Pete, as how he wantsto be addressed, is no different from the thousands of people whoyou cross path in your day to day existence. But behind this tall, virile, well refined and brilliant man lies a true blooded, patrioticLasallian. Aside from being a product of three diverse cultures(Waray, Manileño and Caviteño), he considers Dasmariñas his home.He is a hands-on father to his two-year old daughter, Ileana, husbandto his wife, Maria Lailanie. He is presently taking up his Mastersin Business Administration and an instructor under the BusinessManagement Department of this University. Few people knowthat Pete is the co-owner of 24-hour convenient store in Pasay City.He was born in Tacloban, Leyte, where he spent his childhood years. After 5 years, their family migrated to Malate, Manila and in 1985,his family finally decided to settle here in Cavite.Pete gave me a kaleidoscope view of life as a student here inDLSU-Dasmariñas. With the way he speaks and answers my questions,I can feel the magnitude of his experiences in life. Throughoutthe interview process I could sense his passion for excellence. Accordingto him, La Salle also serves as his springboard to discoverand reveal his true identity. “Actually, La Salle by now and evenbefore is not just one of those prestigious universities mantled in theNational Capital Region. For me it is also a place where one cansense brotherhood as made alive by its people.”As Pete reminisced what once was, he told me, that TeatroLasalliana is one of his family in La Salle. “There, I have learned theperfect meaning of professionalism and the importance of the aptitudegiven to me by God”. To date Pete is still an active memberof Teatro Lasalliana, an organization that continues to inspire andtouch the lives of its members’. “For me, what I really liked aboutLa Salle is the fact that it is not just an institution per se, that cultivatesthe crafts of its students, rather it is more like a home whereone can find a family.”Pete continues, “My life as a Lasallian did not end the momentI received my diploma during my graduation.” It seems to me thatby his focus in education he would like to follow the footsteps ofSt. John Baptist De La Salle, keeping the torch of education flamingand blazing. He has worked for four different companies andwas once promoted to a managerial position and yet, “I resigned, because I think I already proved myself in the industry and I am stilllooking for more. So I decided to return to my alma mater andthere I started my teaching profession, where I find some personalfulfillment.” When Pete, informed me of this, I felt that he reallyhave the passion to serve his beloved alma mater. Although it soundscliché, “blood is thicker than water”, is a fitting description of hisparting words. Until now, he can still feel the “brotherhood” embeddedin him by DLSU-Dasmariñas, a blood that continuously flowsin his veins for eternity. In the end, Pete extends his gratitude to theUniversity for making him who he is today. “For me, one of the bestvalues imparted to me by La Salle is not just excellence built intradition, but the excellence built on harmony between its peoplewoven by our diverse cultural threads.”Pete’s passion to go back to his roots in the service of his fellowLasallians has become a yardstick by which the entire De La SalleUniversity-Dasmariñas tries to measure the meaning of the worddedication. He is not just a man of success and compassion, healso calls on his fellow alumni to continue living a Lasallian way oflife. He believes that “the success of a single Lasallian is a successof the whole Lasallian community!”Verdeng Verde 11

THE PRESIDENT’S REPORTI thank the Great Architect of the Universe for giving me the wisdom and strength that made me survive my first year aspresident of DLSAA DLSU-D Chapter, Inc. I never thought that I would be meeting a rough and rugged road, but with God’sgrace, my quest proved to be a triumph. I was tried by circumstances, by pressures, and by people. It is just that my resolve isfirm, I will not be denied. These are expected, anyways. However, there are also those souls who kept my sprits high andmaintained my sanity by their words of support and above all by their deeds. To all of you who have been with me throughthick and thin, my deepest appreciation and gratitude. I don’t take the credit for what the Alumni Association achieved thus far.I only take pride that I was part of it and still am. The Board of Trustees, the Executive Council Officers, Collegiate Officers, staff, and the alumni themselves are the force behind the success. Maraming, maraming salamat po!It is my self-imposed obligation to give what ought to be for the alumni: quality service. My thrusts in my two-year termas president is anchored on Q5. Q1 is Quality of members, Q2 is Quantity of Members, Q3 is Quality of Projects, Q4 is Qualityof Benefits, and Q5 is Quality of Advocacies.QUALITY OF MEMBERSQ1 -* Collegiate homecomings were held throughout the year and in the process the alumni themselves activelyparticipated in the preparations. Thanks to the efforts of the Vice President for Homecoming Joel Espedidoand the Presidents of the Collegiate Alumni Associations.* Alumni served as speakers sponsored by the different units in the University. The likes of Richard Alcantara,Rommel Rodriguez, Ryan Evangelista, among others contributed to efforts of the University in endeavors suchas curriculum development and career pathing.QUANTITY OF MEMBERSQ2 - * Steadily, the number of alumni with new alumni card (green card only) is increasing. As of April 20, 2007,there are 5,984 alumni who have their own card. As of January 2007, in partnership with the Alumni Relationsand Placement Office, the Alumni Association was able to build and update the profiles of 13, 476 alumni.* The collegiate homecomings are gaining grounds as far as alumni participation is concerned. In a span of oneyear alone, we had eight (8) collegiate alumni homecomings.College Number of AttendeesCollege of Law Enforcement 31College of Law Enforcement 61(Unang Hirit sa Tag-init)College of Liberal Arts 45College of Engineering and Technology 31College of Nursing and Midwifery 9College of Radiologic Technology 26College of Education 41College of International Hospitality 20_______________TOTAL 264QUALITY OF SERVICES/PROJECTSQ3 –* Every year the Grand Alumni Homecoming is spearheaded by the Alumni Association with an improvingattendance and participation every passing year. This year’s homecoming is on April 28, 2007. Awards will alsobe given to outstanding alumni.12 Verdeng Verde*Issuance of unified Alumni Card honored in at least 289 establishments for privileges and discounts.* Before graduation, senior students are given an alumni orientation to prepare them in their membership tothe Alumni Association. This was set on Feb 28, March 1, 2, and 3, 2007.

* The Alumni Association publishes a magazine entitled “Verdeng Verde” for the purpose of informationdissemination. This is usually distributed during the Grand Alumni Homecoming.* The Alumni Association provides directory of alumni to fellow alumni but with prior approval of the concerned.* The Alumni Association has also sponsored and co-sponsored activities and projects spearheaded by thedifferent sectors of the community. The Alumni Association has co-sponsored the career seminar series of theGuidance Counseling Office, the Homecoming of Former SPREAD Scholars sponsored by the Student AdmissionsOffice among other things.* Recently, the Alumni Association sponsored a “Friendship Game” between alumni and current basketballvarsity players on January 15, 2007. In a rubber match, the Alumni Team emerged victorious. A buzzer beaterby an alumnus Paulo Belen approximately 70 feet away from the basket made the difference. This will not bepossible without the efforts of Joy Parohinog, the vice president for projects and activities and Gerardo SergioIII, board of trustee.QUALITY OF BENEFITSQ4 –* In the bid to empower alumni to help each other, the Association came up with an alternative outreach called“Alumni Tulungan Center”. This was initiated during the incumbency of Dr. Alvin Crudo as president. As thename suggests, ATC is the flagship project of the Association in empowering alumni in helping each other in alltypes of distress call, from the simplest to the most complex concerns. Under the ATC program, the AlumniAssociation has five (5) scholars and has helped a number of alumni finished their studies through the saidscholarship program. The ATC also provides medical and mortuary assistance subject to the availability offunds.QUALITY OF ADVOCACIESQ5 –*The Alumni Association is also involved with quality advocacies. Our priority is environmental protection andpreservation. Hence, we are engaged in tree planting activity called “Greening the Roots”. The Alumni Associationthrough the College of Liberal Arts Alumni Association is helping “youths at risk” through paralegalconsultations. There are a number of juvenile who are imprisoned without specific charges and mixed up withhardened criminals. I congratulate the efforts of Tom N. Durias, president of College of Liberal Arts AlumniAssociation and Armanellie Matro, officer of the same collegiate association. We are still half-way of our journey, rest assured that we will not stop until we reach our destination. Together we shalltravel, be it a rough and rugged road, it is my obligation to bring glory to the Alumni Association. I can only do that with thecooperation of fellow officers, with the participation of the alumni, and above all upon the blessing of the Ruler of Heaven andEarth! Animo, La Salle!NATHANIEL S. FOR FRESH GRADUATEScareers 101These days, getting hired for a job is not an easyfeat. Gone are the days when all one needs is abio-data with a picture and off you go to your employer. As the quality of education and the compensationpackages go higher, so are the qualifications.Everybody has to really give their best shotif they want the job.More than just landing a good job, one key ingredientto success and professional satisfaction isby first recognizing the career path that one wishesto take. Doing a hit-and-miss approach in buildinga career can lead to mistake after mistake in jobhunting until eventually, one would end up frustratedand dissatisfied with his profession. Anothercommon pitfall is jumping into the bandwagon, saythis particular line of work (i.e. care giving, callcenter) is the “in” thing, most fresh graduates immediatelyapply for it without considering if theyreally want the job. This also happens when agroup of friends decide that they all would pursuea particular career, an applicant may simply followthe lead instead of going for something he wants.14 Verdeng Verde

Verdeng Verde 15

FOR FRESH GRADUATESTo avoid making these mistakes, here are a few tips:Plan. It’s highly important that you first know your destinationbefore you take the first step towards it. That way, eachdecision that you make concerning your career is alignedwith your long-term goal. In choosing a career, you can neverstart too early. The sooner you decide on what you want todo, the more time and preparation you have. Career planningrequires knowing yourself and giving serious thoughtto your needs, interests, skills and goals. Think of your careerless as a ladder but more like a web; webs have acenter but no top and a lot of paths that connect. Movingalong webs you can earn from the skills developed ratherthan simply seniority. Today the notion of a career ladder issomewhat antiquated. Most people find that they spiral fromjob to job, sometimes in the same company, sometimesbetween companies. They stay within the general field ofcompetence, but generally, that field has no sharply definedborders. In a nutshell, choosing your career entails carefulconsideration on the following:1. It must be something you genuinely like to do. Thisis identifying your own strengths, weaknesses andinterests. For sure your school particularly your guidanceor placement office had prepared you for this(excellent psychology test are available to help withthis need)2. It must be something you have the ability to do. (E.g...Knowledgeable on certain computer programs photoshop, excel oracle etc. AutoCAD, drafting etc.)3. It must be something that you can earn a living ofdoing. Being successful maybe one thing but maintaininga desired standard of living may be another.4. It must be something you are permitted to do. Anyprofession or occupation must e socially acceptable.Meaning you maybe an expert with explosive youcan be an efficient terrorist, or with computers youcan be a hacker etc.5. It must be something that brings cultural affirmation. In other words most people need to feel some measureof respect from their contemporaries for whatthey do.Get your bearings first. Before you go out and massproduce your resume, carefully study first the current trendsin hiring. Know the companies that are out there, the packagesthat are available and the opportunities that one canget, given the limited qualifications that a fresh graduatehas. Recognize that there are different industries – banking, food service, call centers and retail are some of these.Aside from the line of work you want, also think of the industrythat you would like to be a part of. When choosing acompany, one can look for these four signs:1. Does the company care? Is it concerned over thewelfare of its employees? Does it promote a cultureof doing everything from the heart instead of justpushing its people to produce?2. Does it focus on its customers? A company that’sparticular with the satisfaction of it’s external customersis a good indication that it also values thewelfare of it’s internal customers – it’s manpower3. Is it team-oriented? Dynamic companies succeedbecause it encourages everyone to work togetherfor one common goal. It does not promote divisionamong managers and direct reports but rather encouragesynergy among all it’s units16 Verdeng Verde

FOR FRESH GRADUATES4. Is it the best? It’s an established fact that stable companiesprovide stable employment. Though it canbe very tempting to see off-the-scale compensationpackages from some newer companies, also considerthat the newer the company, the less stable itis. Your big paycheck may be here now but you’llnever know. In a few years, it might just be gonewhen you least expect it. Look for a company whichhas a proven track record in the industry, a companythat has been around for more than 45 yearsis a sure sign.Impress. When entering the corporate world, there is onekey to remember – your image is everything. Starting fromthe resume that you submit, employers will make up an imageof you based on what they read and saw about you.Recruiters often advise fresh graduates to exercise a lot ofcare in preparing your resume because it can boost yourapplication or drag you behind the other candidates. Forsomeone who’s just starting, a one-page, basic resume willsuffice. Creating an elaborate portfolio of your qualificationsmay not work for you at this point. Remember, employerslead a busy life and they don’t have the luxury of time tobrowse a thick wad of paper. Better to get straight to thepoint, highlight your important and impressive characteristicslike any previous work experience, grades and academicrecognitions, projects you have led, to name a fewGet online. The fastest, most practical and arguably thebest way to apply these days is doing it online. Most employersget the services of online recruiting units such asJobstreet to facilitate automatic screening and evaluationof the incoming applicants. Having an online account has alot of perks and guarantees that you application gets rightinto the company’s inbox for evaluation. Forget the snailmail, log on and see the difference.Face it. Interviews are the most crucial phases of the application. This is where the contact between the candidateand the prospective employer get in contact and in the process, thresh out other things which cannot be seen even ina well-composed resume. As it is an important event, applicantsare highly encouraged to be at their best during interviews– from the clothes to the shoes to the poise and manners, everything is sure to count. When it comes to clothing, most recommended is wearing traditional, conservativeattire. It gives the impression of one who’s serious forthe job, matured enough to take on challenges and has theair of professionalism. And with that, one also has to actprofessionally. Courtesy to everyone is a must – from theguard to the receptionist to the interviewer himself. Ask appropriatequestions, give the best and most convincing answers, try to speak fluently and naturally – not scripted andcontrived. Now these tips are easier said than done. Thatwhy most first time job hunters are advised to rehearse priorto the actual day. This will at least help you develop yourconfidence for the big day.For every job seeker, landing a good job is an achievementlike no other. It gives the feeling of satisfaction that one hasbeaten out the rest of the pack. Like what everyone says, job hunting is no simple task, but we have to get up and doit. For our careers, for our future.Verdeng Verde 17
