Legends, The William James Sanchez Story
by Chuck Woodson
Interviewing Bill Sanchez for his story is like going into
combat without any Kevlar. Get ready, you’re going to
take some heat rounds. I started off asking Bill about his
Mom and Dad. His mother was Jobita and his father was
Anisto (spelling?). “They came over to the United States
from Spain, via the Hawaiian Islands,” Bill stated. His
family is Castilian. “My older sister, Nell, was born in
Hawaii. The rest of us were born in California. Nell,
Julian, Josephine, Florence and Francis were his sisters and
brother. His Mom and Dad stayed in Hawaii for a few
years and then came to California, where they settled in
Watsonville.” Bill was born April 14, 1922.
Bill’s dad worked in the Apple orchards. His father spent
most of his working time of his life working for Holohan’s
orchards. “He planted, irrigated, sprayed, pruned, thinned,
picked, cultivated, you name it. He did it all,” Bill remembered.
“Back in those days, Watsonville was all apples.
Everyone in those days worked in apples.”
The house Bill was brought up in is in the 200 block on
Elm Street. “An evening meal at our home always
included potatoes and beans,” Bill thought back. When
Bill was a kid he hung out with ten to fifteen kids and
either played at the high school field or they used to walk
from school and go downtown and end up at the library,
where they would read the daily funnies from the newspapers.
Then, back they would walk to head home.
Range News
Range Work Party
Thanks to Richard Eichinger, Brannon Schell and Stu
Lawson who came out for the May 5th Club work party
to improve the range.
Semiauto Pistol Clinic on July 14th Robert Leonardich will conduct a third clinic the morning
of July 14th By John Maraldo
. As anyone who's attended can confirm for you,
this is very worthwhile couching. And it's absolutely free:
you only have to bring your semiautomatic pistol,
ammunition, eye and ear protection and a willingness to
learn. Only one slot is open. Contact me if you want to
take advantage of this training.
Range Closures:
The range will be closed the morning of July 14th for
Bob’s clinic, and all day June 30th for the Range
Safety Officer Class.
When Bill finished school he went to work in the orchards
and worked his way up to “top stacker” in a cold storage
warehouse. “We worked in two and three man teams in the
warehouse. We stacked seven boxes on the hand cart, and
then we would run out of room in the warehouse, so we
would start stacking seven more apple boxes on top of the
bottom seven, and so on. It was my job to climb up on top
of the first seven and the lower guy would hand me up the
apple boxes and I would stack another seven on top. We
went up twenty one feet, or three stacks of seven,” Bill
recollected. “I got and additional five to eight cents an
hour, because I was a ‘top stacker’. Back in those days we
only made twenty five or thirty five cents an hour, so that
additional five to eight cents made a big difference.”
“When I was nineteen years old some friends convinced
me we could make more money if we went to work in the
ship yards in Oakland. There was a Navy yard up there
and we worked building Liberty Ships up there for a few
years. I lived up in a small place up there with some of the
guys I worked with and we made some good money.”
(Continued next page...)
Range Closures Cont.
Often a range-closing event is approved by the Board and
takes place between newsletters, so it's always a good idea to
call the caretaker [(831) 724-7311] before driving out to use
the range. But often you'll only get an answering machine
when you call so we're trying to set up a system whereby
members will receive email alerts of all Club events. So if
you haven't already done so, you now have another good
reason to tell our Secretary Mike Ciglar
[m.ciggy@sbcglobal.net] that you want to receive the
newsletter by email.
Range Improvements:
Thanks to Mike Holcroft and Fred Pierce for stepping up. If
you can spare the range a little time, please give me a call.
We have some work to do.
Legends, The William James Sanchez Story (Cont.)
By Chuck Woodson
In 1941 after Pearl Harbor, Bill enlisted in the Marine
Corps. From home Bill was sent to San Diego for boot
camp and then sent to Hawaii. While Bill was on break
from boot camp he met his future wife, Rose Previsich.
From Hawaii Bill was deployed into the Pacific theater
and ended up back in Hawaii in 1945. He was then
sent back to San Diego where he was assigned as a drill
instructor for boot camp. “On the train from Oakland
down to San Diego, we spent a day and a half on the
train, and it was the longest God damned train ride of
my life getting back to base.”
Bill and Rose had two children, Donna Jean and
William James the second. “When I got back home I
got back into the agriculture business and started
driving trucks. I drove trucks for a while and then
went into plumbing. Pat’s plumbing was looking for
an apprentice. Worked for them for for a while until
the owner died, then I went and took the test.” Bill’s
Plumbing was born. Bill’s Plumbing got into larger
commercial projects, such as Cabrillo College, some
of the local schools and other projects including the
businesses in and around the Monterey Bay.
Bill joined the PVR&G Club around 1971 and there
were around one hundred members and most of
were old members. “The work parties in those days
consisted of cleaning out the trash fish by having
fishing derby’s. The next thing we did was built
docks on the lake.” Bill mentioned that it was
tough getting the old guys out for the work parties.
“I started taking on the plumbing for the club,” Bill
remembered. “From the kitchen to the bathrooms,
to the bar area, all of the plumbing in those days I
did. Even the mobil home we have for the caretaker.
They got more work they want to do for the plumbing
under the bar. Well who do they ask to do it, me.
Wait a minute you guys, I’m 90 years old, give me
a break.”
“Do you know, I built the little metal box down in the
shooting range, where you’re supposed to put some money
in when you shoot?” Bill remembers when he was the range
master for the shooting range. “I would take care of the
range. When we needed something, when something
needed to be reapaired, whatever was needed, I would take
care of it. Somehow, I don’t know how it happened, I ended
up being the range master. Same thing happened in the
kitchen. I was instrumental in getting the range, and the
same thing in the scullery, we remodeled the scullery. We
also remodeled the bar. I was the head bartender for some
twenty five plus years. Everybody wants to get in on the
good stuff, but nobody wants to do the work.”
Bill headed up fund raising for the NRA for the club for
years and was responsible helping the club raise tens of
thousands of dollars to improve the club and the gun range.
Bill taught Hunter Education for the California Department
of Fish and Game. In the early days he would go and pick
the kids up at their homes and bring them to the classes and
then take them back home. He was also I Scout Master for
the Boy Scouts of America. Bill would teach his Boy Scouts
plumbing for extra merit badges to give the kids some
practical experience for their training.
Bill last words of advice to those that would like to stick
around for a longer life, “Stay out of trouble. If I hadn’t
enjoyed myself I wouldn’t have done it. I always enjoyed
working with kids. Making sure they learned, and had a
good time while they were doing it. If I can help a young
kid out I’m going to do it.”
Bill finished up our session with, “I taught both my daughter
and son everything I know. Both of them turned out pretty
good, I think. They both have good lives and their doing
okay. So, maybe I didn’t do too bad.”
Thank you Bill Sanchez, for your unselfish dedication and
service.
