From the HeadmasterJay Piggot MAJuly <strong>2013</strong><strong>End</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Term</strong> <strong>2013</strong>Dear Parents,<strong>ACADEMIC</strong>History PrizesFor a superb essay on 'Was the Terror the inevitable outcome <strong>of</strong> the French Revolution <strong>of</strong>1789?', the L6th History Essay Prize was awarded to Myles Pittam (P).For an insightful essay on a discussion as to whether 'Proportional representation makesgovernment less democratic’, the L6th Politics Essay Prize was awarded to Louis Sutton (P).There were many outstanding projects produced by M4s this year in History; significantly,for an exceptional piece <strong>of</strong> research on Gallipoli, The Crawfurd History Prize was awarded toLucy Marquand (R).DebatingThe Dr Derbyshire Inter-House debating competition has engaged young minds towards theend <strong>of</strong> term as M4s and U4s Houses debated topics such as whether the police should bearmed, whether private schools should be abolished, and whether opponents <strong>of</strong> oppressiveregimes should be given financial and military aid. Thanks go to Captain <strong>of</strong> Debating NikitaGanin (F) who chaired many <strong>of</strong> these debates with assurance and perspicacity.The final took place between Robinson and Rosebery, the topic debated was whethercorporal punishment should be reintroduced into schools. The winners <strong>of</strong> the prize - a dinnerfor the entire winning house - emerged after a compelling debate; the winning house in theDr Derbyshire Inter-house Debating competition is Rosebery.DistinctionsOne Middle Fourth Wilson girl earned 3 Distinctions for outstanding academic work thisterm; Christy Yu (W) deserves appropriate recognition for her endeavours.Merit Certificates:The following pupils achieved the highest number <strong>of</strong> Merits this term in their respective yeargroups:3

This year's winner is RebeccaHibberd (Wh); Rebecca has made an outstanding contribution to promoting the greateradvancement <strong>of</strong> school charities and she has been a creative force <strong>of</strong> nature in bringingforward new products to sell.MUSICConcertsThe Downs Singers and Big Band opened this term with a striking concert <strong>of</strong> quality andspectacle, both under the passionate direction <strong>of</strong> Mr Holiday. Big School was also the venuefor the Ensembles Concert in early May, the standard <strong>of</strong> performance from all the groupswas <strong>of</strong> a very high order.4


In the Leavers’ Concert, members <strong>of</strong> the Upper Sixth presented a varied programme andclearly delighted their audience as they celebrated their love <strong>of</strong> music from across thespectrum. Similarly, a large number <strong>of</strong> Middle and Upper Fourth Form pupils presented twoaccomplished concerts, celebrating the breadth <strong>of</strong> musical talent in these year groups.The Chapel Choir Recital was splendid presenting a full range <strong>of</strong> music, as a choir they haveperformed some exacting and exciting choral singing. Abi Marrow has led the choir ablythroughout the year, she now hands over to Izi Thomas as Chapel Choir Prefect.The organ recital in Chapel this term given by Martin Ellis highlighted his exceptional talentas a musician and we are grateful for his contribution to Chapel services across thirteenyears. This award, equivalent toperformance at degree level, is the highest practical music examination a pupil has passedwhilst at <strong>Epsom</strong>.Each year The Scott Cup is presented to a musician in the Upper Fourth Form who showsgreat promise and has made a very significant contribution to the musical life <strong>of</strong> the school.This individual’s performing highlights over the past two years include playing with thepr<strong>of</strong>essional musicians in Les Miserables, performing as part <strong>of</strong> the orchestra with ChoralSociety, winning the local Rotary Club Young Musician Competition, and, recently, gaining aplace to study with James Galway in Switzerland during the <strong>Summer</strong> holidays. The Scott Cupis awarded to Will Goddard.Two years ago the <strong>College</strong> was saddened by the tragic death <strong>of</strong> Louise Walsom. As a MajorMusic Scholar, music was an important part <strong>of</strong> Louise's existence, she was an accomplishedpianist, a member <strong>of</strong> Chapel Choir, her greatest musical passion was the clarinet, aninstrument on which she displayed great promise.As a permanent memorial to her, the Louise Walsom Cup is presented each year in the<strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Term</strong> to the most promising Fourth Form clarinettist. This year's recipient <strong>of</strong> thetrophy is Aiden Findlay (P).5


DRAMAThe Junior Play Billy Liar entertained and instructed during the final week <strong>of</strong> term, a talentedcast benefited from the expertise <strong>of</strong> Dr. Huxter and director Mrs. Jeens.We extend our congratulations to the young cast <strong>of</strong> M4 and U4 actors who commanded thestage, particularly Ed Aves (P) who played the title character with conviction. Tim Lazarus(H), Emily Shanks (W), Georgia McGrath (R), Izzy Rosen (R), Vogue Phelps (Rv) and AlexBishop (Fa) inhabited their parts convincingly, too; Emma Hibbitt (R) revelled in the role <strong>of</strong>the disapproving grandmother.Jake McGrath (C) and Jonny Pollard (H) were student directors, Immy Ursell (W) andHeather Correia-Guntert (R) were stage managers; the 1960s set was highlighted by thetech team <strong>of</strong> Ed Dennis (F) and Rob Thomas (F), led by Mr Rob Anderson.Bravo to all concerned.CCF AND DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARDDuring the recent Field Day, nearly 300 cadets were involved in activities, 260 <strong>of</strong> whomwere out on overnight camps. The M4s experienced their first CCF exercise. The RAF sectioncompleted an overnight camp and hike, whilst the Bronze Duke <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh's group had apractice expedition. The initiative group undertook a map and orienteering exercise and theRoyal Navy section sailed at Ripley. Importantly, many <strong>of</strong> these activities were led by L6thNCOs as part <strong>of</strong> their leadership training.The M4 joined the CCF this term and undertook a variety <strong>of</strong> activities. In the inter-squadcompetitions the results were close; however, Squad 6 was the eventual winners:The best male cadet was Felix Griffin and best female cadet Sophia Accion Barr.The winner <strong>of</strong> the Best Recruit Trophy was Heather Correia-Guntert.Those undertaking Silver Duke <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh's Awards (some 50) undertake a practiceexpedition in the Wye Valley at the end <strong>of</strong> term before they complete their final expedition inAugust in the Brecon Beacons.Bronze Duke <strong>of</strong> Edinburgh's Award's were gained by 29, 5th year pupils.During the summer the army section will hold their annual camp at St. Martin's PlainFolkestone; similarly, the RAF section attend an adventure training camp at LakeWindermere.SPORTBoys AthleticsThe boys experienced a successful season, winning the Gomme and Goddard cups as well asthe district championships at Junior and Intermediate age groups. On the co-ed side, theathletes won the home co-ed match and finished second, overall, in the prestigiousCopenhagen Shield, with the Inter boys running out winners.The Inter boys won their age group <strong>of</strong> the Lord Burghley trophy at Eton, the toughest fixture<strong>of</strong> the summer. The boys' team never finished lower than 3rd in any competition - animpressively high level <strong>of</strong> performance.6

Harriet andPortia Jennings (R) led the way with some fine performances; they claimed a number <strong>of</strong>trophies on Junior Girls' Athletics <strong>College</strong> Event.In the juniors, Jenny Nicholson (Cr) and Chantel Murphy (Cr) were selected for Surrey afterexcellent performances in the districts.New captains Jodie Koep (R) and Natalie Chu (Wh) will harness this talent next season.7

The 1st XI completed theseason with four wins, four losses and a hard fought draw against the MCC. The victory overthe OEs was the highlight <strong>of</strong> a good season. Myles Pittam (P) with 372 runs and Harry Allen(F) with 337 runs were the bedrock <strong>of</strong> the batting. Nick Williams (G) was leading wickettaker with 14 victims, whilst Harry Allen also claimed 13 wickets.The 2nd and 3rd XI had challenging seasons but stuck at it; while the U15As had a goodseason with Isaac Braithwaite (C), Harry Williams (P), Harry Roberts (C) and Peter O'Brien(P) all representing the 1st XI.The U15 B team won six <strong>of</strong> their 9 fixtures with Rhys Waskett (G), Will Kibblewhite (G), NilsBerring (G) and Will Morris (Rn) making significant contributions with bat and ball. Top score trophies have also been garnered: Sam Owen (C), Tom Brankin-Frisby (C),Bogdan Stoichescu (G) and Matt Barker (Rn) all collecting trophies or medals for theirindividual performances this season.We now travel to the Nationals next week with hope in our hearts and high expectations.Boys TennisThe 1st team has shown decent form in the regular Saturday matches with a record <strong>of</strong>played six, won four. Mrs Sinnett has been with the <strong>College</strong> since January this year covering a maternityleave.Miss Claire Rudd leaves to take up the post <strong>of</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> Science at Surval Montreaux inSwitzerland. Claire has taught Chemistry at <strong>Epsom</strong> for a year.Mrs Angela Woolley retires from the Modern Languages Department.Mr Richard Willis has been appointed Head <strong>of</strong> History at Sir William Perkins's School. Richardhas been teaching History and Politics at <strong>Epsom</strong> since 2010.Miss Hannah Brabham has accepted a position at St Catherine's School, Twickenham toteach Modern Foreign Languages. Hannah has been teaching at <strong>Epsom</strong> for 4 years.Mrs Kellie Symons has been appointed Teacher <strong>of</strong> Mathematics at Sir William Perkins'sSchool. Kellie started at <strong>Epsom</strong> in 2009.Miss Katie Cloonan has been accepted on a PhD course at the University <strong>of</strong> Rochester, USA.Katie has taught English at <strong>Epsom</strong> since 2006 and she has been Housemistress <strong>of</strong> RoseberyHouse for the last 3 years.Mrs Iris Friedler leaves the Art Department to spend more time with her family. She startedteaching at <strong>Epsom</strong> in 2000.Mr Roger Gill retires from the Modern Languages Department. He will, however, be back in<strong>Epsom</strong> to help with EPQ's; Roger started his first career at <strong>Epsom</strong> in 1986.Mr David Poore retires from teaching Physics. David started in 1997 and during his career at<strong>Epsom</strong> he has taken on many different roles including that <strong>of</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> Physics.Mr Ian Newman began his career at <strong>Epsom</strong> in 1987 and he will retire from the ArtDepartment after 26 years <strong>of</strong> service.Dr Simon Wade arrived at <strong>Epsom</strong> in 1981 and through his time at <strong>Epsom</strong> has contributedwidely to many areas <strong>of</strong> school life, most notably as a teacher <strong>of</strong> Biology and as Head <strong>of</strong>PSHE. Dr Wade retires after 32 years <strong>of</strong> service to the <strong>College</strong>.14


Towards the end <strong>of</strong> term the <strong>College</strong> hosted a series <strong>of</strong> events to mark the notablecontribution <strong>of</strong> those colleagues leaving the community.
