In recent years, good monitoring data has led toreclassification requests to the USEPA for most of the region. Implementation of dust controlrules and controls on a number of critical sources have led to the reductions in PM 10concentrations. The numbers of violations of the NAAQS for ozone has declined, but violationshave continued. Rules establishing controles for Ozone precursor enissions have beenimplemented, but overwhelming transport of pollutants from the South Coast Air Basin and theSan Joaquin Valley Air Basin continually impacts the desert. Both the South Coast and the SanJoaquin Valley are both classified as serious nonattainment areas (see Table 3-8).
