Similarly <strong>of</strong> the 336 Foreign Feature<strong>Film</strong>s certified in the year, 85 were granted “U” certificates, 76“UA” certificates and 175 “ A” certificates.The Board certified a total <strong>of</strong> 1748 Indian Short <strong>Film</strong>s duringthe period under review, <strong>of</strong> which 1605 were granted “U”certificates, 102 “UA” certificates and 40 “A” certificates and 1“S” certificate. In respect <strong>of</strong> the 278 Foreign Short <strong>Film</strong>s certifiedin the year, 147 were granted “U” certificates, 84 “UA” certificatesand 47 “A” certificates.A total <strong>of</strong> 7129 certificates ere issued to Video films duringthe period. Acclaimed as the 'VisualEncyclopedia on India' this principal media unit has, during thelast six decades, withstood all kind <strong>of</strong> weathers to provide anorganized platform for the documentary film movement in India.Initially conceived as an agency to disseminate information tothe public at large by recording the events and preserving thecontemporary history on celluloid, <strong>Film</strong>s Division, while fulfillingthese objectives truthfully has, nevertheless, moved ahead anddiverged into new spheres in the last few years, keeping pacewith the changing trends and demands. FD has its archive fullydigitalized. More films are now made on video format by the<strong>Film</strong>s Division. Documentary film festivals are regularly organizedin various places especially the North East for wider reach tothose people who have no access to cinema theatres. FD hasalso ventured into the publication <strong>of</strong> 'Documentary Today' aquarterly magazine exclusively for the documentary genre, a first<strong>of</strong> its kind in the country.<strong>Film</strong>s Division has its headquarter in Mumbai. It is equippedwith all modern facilities including editing suites, recordingtheatres, animation studio, preview theatres, cameras and videoequipments which are available on hire. The Head Office alsohouses the film library containing more than 8500 titles <strong>of</strong>priceless content. FD has two Regional Production Centres, inKolkata and Bangaluru and another fully equipped Centre inDelhi. While the RPCs produce documentary films oncontemporary subjects, the Delhi Centre caters to the productiondemands by various ministries. The <strong>Film</strong> Auditorium in Delhi ishired out for premier shows. While FD's stock shots are in greatdemand, it also supplies film prints as well as CDs to the FDP,educational institutions, NGOs and film societies for non108 109
commercial screenings. FD also provides infrastructural supportto other media units for organising film festivals. The ten branches<strong>of</strong> FD arrange regular supply <strong>of</strong> approved films to the cinemas,conduct film festivals and also market CDs. <strong>Film</strong>s are regularlytelecast by Doordarshan Kendras also. <strong>Film</strong>s Division regularlyparticipates in the <strong>Film</strong> Bazaar <strong>of</strong> IFFI and provides technicaland other support for its smooth conduct.Over 1500 International, National & State awards andCertificates <strong>of</strong> Participation, have been won by FD so far, a rarefeat for any public organization. A milestone FD has achievedis by successfully organizing the Mumbai International <strong>Film</strong><strong>Festival</strong> for Documentary, Short & Animation <strong>Film</strong>s (MIFF)continuously from 1990. Counted among the top internationalfestivals for documentaries, this biennial event showcases thebest films in different categories and attracts international filmpersonalities, critics and delegates apart from cineaste from allover the country. This competitive event <strong>of</strong>fers cash prizes worththe IR 2.7 million, Gold and Silver conches. The MIFF has thedistinction <strong>of</strong> being the only film festival in this part <strong>of</strong> theworld which is fully managed by film makers.<strong>Film</strong>s Division has organized more than 90 film festivals in2006-08 including the first ever Swatantrata <strong>Film</strong>otsav in Delhi,International Documentary <strong>Festival</strong>s in Aizawl, Mizoram,Guwahati & J&K. The primary charter <strong>of</strong> NFAI is to safeguard theheritage <strong>of</strong> Indian Cinema for posterity and act as a centre fordissemination <strong>of</strong> a healthy film culture in the country. Promotion<strong>of</strong> film scholarship and research on various aspects <strong>of</strong> Cinemaalso form part <strong>of</strong> its objectives. Familiarizing foreign audienceswith Indian Cinema and to make it more visible across the globeis another declared function <strong>of</strong> the Archive. NFAI has been amember <strong>of</strong> the International Federation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Film</strong> Archives sinceMay 1969, which enables it to get expert advice and material onpreservation techniques, documentation etc. The Archive has itsown film vaults designed according to international filmpreservation standards. The construction <strong>of</strong> specialized vaultsfor preserving colour films is under way.It is an ongoing job at the Archive to trace and acquire nationaland international films to enrich its collection. The well-stockedlibrary <strong>of</strong> over 26,000 books on Cinema published across theglobe is a boon to serious students <strong>of</strong> Cinema. More than 100Indian and foreign journals on Cinema are received in the library.Over 34,000 filmscripts both Indian and foreign received fromthe Central Boards <strong>of</strong> <strong>Film</strong> Certification are also preserved inthe Archive.The Research and Documentation Centre has a large collection<strong>of</strong> ancillary material on Indian Cinema. This Centre attempts tocollect photographs/stills, song-booklets, wallposters, pamphletsand other publicity material <strong>of</strong> films certified by the various<strong>Film</strong> Certification Boards in the country.NFAI encourages and promotes research and academicactivities on every aspect <strong>of</strong> Cinema.
