In very many cases, however good a dancer shebe, marriage would spell the end of her career. In the film thereare parallel streams to the young girl's story. One important oneis her teacher's. She is a single parent who is followed throughher daily chores and the pursuit of her profession- teachingMohiniyattam. The teacher's is a down-to-earth story whereasthe girl's is a very romantic, trip which is difficult to be termeddream or real.Stage performances of accomplished artistes are there tounderscore and intensify the young dancers bhava - the feelings.At the very basic level the film had to look beautiful.The choice of the locales was made on the basis of its patronsin the past as well as the present. Aristocratic families, temples,and Palaces were the natural settings. The concert halls representthe present. While it has its roots in the folk arts, the nourishmentalways came from the classical traditions. In its present evolvedform, Mohiniyattam is a very sophisticated dance form.100 101
SYNOPSISWHOSE LAND IS ITANYWAY?Video/colour/English/40 minutes/EST-(Bengali portions)The film is about an ongoing peasant movement in Singurvillage, to save their farm land (1000 acres) from being acquiredby the state government of West Bengal in India for a carmanufacturing factory by an industrial giant. This land is fertileand produces at least 4 crops per year. Wasting it on industrywill completely destroy the bio-diversity and ecology of the landand rob 50000 people of their livelihoods. The larger areasurrounding the land will also be affected adversely. The newfactory is scheduled to employ a maximum of 1000 people. Thegovernment has not given the people any information, at all,about the proposed factory and land-use. The people's right toinformation is being violated at every step. It is refusing to listento protests by affected peasants. It has unofficially banned mediareports on the real crisis, using the media as a propaganda tool.The real voice of the people is not being allowed to be heard.The government is using police and para-military forces tobrutally quell any kind of protest by the farmers and others. Theissues are made even more interesting by the fact that the stategovernment of West Bengal is run by a coalition of Left partiesand the fact that India is the world's largest democracy.The 40 minute, English video documentary film aims to bringthis movement to the world for everyone to see how humanrights are being violated and many other socio-economic issuescompletely mauled.
