His Meenamasithile Sooryan (1985)was about the anti-feudal upheaval of the 1940sin Kerala Swathi Thirunal (1987), a period film was a biographicalwork of a 19th century king of Travancore, better known as amusical composer, while Daivathinte Vikrithikal (1992) was thecinematic adaptation of M Mukandan's novel of the same name,Mazha (2001) was adopted from Madhavikutty's story.His other films are Chillu (1982), Prem Nazirine Kanmanilla(1983), Puravrutham (1988), Vachanam (1992).DIRECTOR’S STATEMENTAs in all of my previous films, Rathrimazha too discusses thedistresses, dilemmas and complexities of man-woman relationship.This film is about the new human being, communicatingincessantly with the tools offered by the modern technology yetimpalpable to each other.The story is set in the background of a contemporary avantgardedance troupe. I have attempted to create a filmiccomposition were elements of music, poetry and dance providethe backdrop for the interplay of passionate desires.SYNOPSISTHANIYE(Alone)35mm/colour/Mlayalam/120 minutes/ESTThe protagonist of the film is George Kutty, a rich old planterliving all alone in an old palatial house. He has a son who is adoctor settled in U.S. Kutty is very weak and senile. He cannoteven move without the help of somebody. His daughter-in-law'sbrother and mother are also staying nearby.In the beginning of the story, George Kutty is in a stateof mind in which he does not have any hope for life. Ahome nurse comes to look after him. She is very dominantand arrogant. George Kutty cannot adjust with this womanand within a week itself, she is packed back. The doctor thenarranges for another home nurse by himself. She is young,beautiful and has a personality that commands respect. Hisdaughter in law's mother and brother come to visit GeorgeKutty, not because of their love for him, but because theywant to assert their right over his properties.52 53
Kutty's son all this while has other ideas. He is planning totransform the house into a resort. With the scenic beauty around,it appears an attractive proposition to him. His wife's family alsothinks that foreign money will flow in if they turn the houseinto a resort. The new home nurse brings about a lot of changesin George Kutty's life. A unique relationship develops betweenthem. George Kutty is thoroughly shattered by the negligenceand greed of his son.George Kutty 's daughter-in-law's family interprets the relationshipin another way. They even accuse him of having some illicitrelationship with the young nurse. They inform his son in Americaabout this fathers illicit relationship. Life becomes miserable for people becausethey live in utter solitude and negligence.The younger generation does not realize the value of theexpertise and experience of these old peoples. They also have toface the same situation in their immediate future.In today's society the strength of the relationship isdeteriorating due to lack of love since the new generation isonly concerned about material games. This phenomena seenevery where in the society is pictured with out any exaggeration.54 55
