EXPERIENCE SHARINGSTürk Telekom continues to take part in the success ofTurkish people and to create added value with theirexperiences through the social responsibility projects, sponsorships and education activities being carried out.Books on The Phone Corporate Solutions Turkish Ministry of Health Hedef AllianceBoğaziçi University Technology and Education Laboratoryfor the Visually Impaired (GETEM)Engin YılmazGETEM DirectorWe are carrying out Books on the Phone project together withTürk Telekom. We believe that providing plenty of audio bookswithin the library of GETEM to the visually impaired is importantin terms of eliminating barriers in society. Thanks to this project carried out with Türk Telekom, we tookthe opportunity of reaching many more visually impairedpersons and informing them about the audio books. Since thelaunch of the project, the number of our members has increasedby over 1,000. Also there has been a significant increase in thenumber of volunteer readers who apply to GETEM. Most of all,we assumed the leading role for raising awareness of listeningaudio books by visually impaired persons and similar projects. After Book on The Phone project, we began to serve for muchmore visually impaired people. We maintain and improveour activities in line with their queries, opinions, needs andexpectations. Furthermore, our activities such as organizingbook reading seminars and providing reader trainings forvolunteer readers whose numbers have increased since Bookson The Phone project began, also continue.Until this project, GETEM was an e-library providing service viainternet. However, although there are 400,000 visually impairedpeople in our country, the number of our members was nearly2,500. One of the main reasons for this is that the educationlevel and computer literacy among the visually impaired peopleis not sufficiently high.Türk Telekom’s fixed line telephone network that reaches allacross Turkey reminded us of the potential to include peoplewho are not able to use computers and enabling them to benefitfrom audio books. Since the telephone, unlike the computer, canbe used easily by everyone without the need of serious trainings, visually impaired people are able to access books withouthindrance via Türk Telekom’s wide fixed line telephone networkwhether or not having computers at their homes. For this reasonit is important for us to work with Türk Telekom. How to benefit from Books on The Phone?Books on the Phone Project offers hundreds of audio booksto visually impaired Türk Telekom customers free of chargethrough their home phones by calling 0 800 219 91 91. The visuallyimpaired customers of Türk Telekom have free access to audiobooks with their passwords given to them after registering toGETEM. Books on the Phone Project will only be available throughthe home phones and the users have options including selectingthe book of their choice, resuming the previous session in theirnext call or skipping back and forth between the chapters.Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urban PlanningGeneral Directorate of Land Registry and CadastreLand Registry and Cadastre Information System(TAKBIS)“Thanks to TAKBIS which was put into practice through thesuccessful cooperation with Türk Telekom, the transactionsmade in any of our offices, are recorded in our central databaseand can be viewed instantly in other Turkish land registry office.”Land Registry and Cadastre Offices are the service points inwhich the public is in intense relation with the government.
