2 IntroductionThis section explains the different intrinsically safe approvals and guidelines, keypadfunctions, and the types of displays offered.2.1 Hazardous Area GuidelinesClassificationIEC, CenelecContinuouslyPresentIntermittentlyPresentAbnormallyPresentThe GSE Models 350 I.S. and 355 I.S. instruments are approved by FM Approvals,ATEX and CSA as intrinsically safe for use in hazardous areas. An intrinsically safedevice has been proven through calculation and testing that it cannot produce enoughelectric or thermal energy under normal or fault conditions to cause ignition offlammable material present in the atmosphere.The hazardous area is defined in terms of how long the hazard is present (materialpresence), what type of flammable material is present (apparatus), and what maximumtemperature can be present (maximum surface temperature).
