E very parent desires the best for their child. In f act, it is only
parents who would wish for their children better than what
they w ish for themselves. In modern times the best is reduced
to the “Best comforts of the world.” The ‘best’ car, the
‘best’ house, the ‘best’ profession, the ‘best’ shop, etc. Each of the
‘bests’ mentioned pertain to the life of this world.
Although Islam does not advocate becoming hermits or abandoning the
world com pletely, at the same time it teac hes us to be mindful of the
life of the hereaf ter. In fac t, Islam puts greater stress on preparation
for the lif e of the hereafter than the ephemeral and transitory life of
this w orld.
Therefore, it is necessary for all parents to focus their attention on
providing ‘the best’ for their c hildren for the Hereafter. An important,
rather essential element for ac hieving this ‘best’ is the c onsum ption of
Halaal. The modern mother is often lazy to cook thus subjec ting her
children to ‘take-away’ foods. This is a most harmful prac tice and
could lead to the spiritual ruin of one’s beloved children.
The thought provoking incident of the king of Afghanistan
The former rector of the world renow ned Darul Uloom Deoband,
Hakimul Islam Hazrat Qari Muhammad Tayyib Sahib (rahmatullahi
alayh), whilst delivering a lecture, explained the importance of feeding
one’s c hildren with Halaal and pure and abstaining from doubtful
foodstuff with the following incident:
I remember an incident which apparently appears to be very simple but
portray s a great lesson for the intelligent ones. It concerns Amir Dost
Muhammad Khan Sahib, the king of Afghanistan. He was the father of
Amir Abdur-Rahman Khan Sahib and the paternal grandfather of
Amanullah Khan Sahib. He was a very pious king whose talks were
proverbial.
On one occ asion, when he entered the palace showing signs of anguish,
grief and sadness, the queen asked him, “Why do I see you so sad
today?”
He replied, “News of a great tragedy has
reached me and that causes me this grief. The
sad news is that when an enemy had attacked
the borders of Afghanistan I dispatc hed our
son with an army to defend us. The
depressing new s is that our son has
been defeated. He is retreating
and fleeing the battlefield. The
enemy is advancing on his heels,
conquering vast tracts of land.
Now I am afflic ted with 2
problems:
I have lost the kingdom,
and my son is returning
defeated, showing
signs of cowardic e. This
blemish will remain w ith
me till death that my
son is w eak and a
coward.”
The queen responded, “All
those reports are
incorrec t, totally false! My
son will never ever f lee from
the battlefield. It is possible
for him to become a martyr
but turning his back to the
enemy and fleeing is
impossible. That inf ormation is false.”
The king then explained, “This information is from the Government’s
Intelligence Services.”
She replied, “They are all liars!”
Thereafter, the king remained silent, thinking to himself, “Who will
explain to this woman, she does not understand the affairs of the
government and she has branded all of them as liars?”
The following day, when the king returned hom e, the queen asked,
“What’s the matter, today you seem very happy?”
He replied, “What you had said has turned out to be true. In fact, our
son has vanquished the enemy and is returning home after driving them
out entirely.”
The wife remarked, “Alhamdu-lillah! My words have proven to be true.”
The king then enquired, “How did you proclaim, with such conf idence
and certainty, that our son could not have been defeated? Did you
receive Divine Inspiration?”
She replied, “I am a woman. How can I receive Divine inspiration? Also, I
am a queen living amongst all these luxuries, so how can I acquire such
exaltation? ”
The king further asked, “How then was it possible f or you to express
with so much conviction that all the inf ormation convey ed to me was
false?”
The queen responded, “That is a secret whic h I do not like to divulge.”
The king was bewildered and curious to know the secret w hich his wife,
G roups of young people smoking the hookah pipe or hubbly
bubbly has become a common sight in South Africa. A burning
coal is placed on top of flavoured tobacco and the smoke is
then filtered through water, before being inhaled through a plastic pipe.
Devi Sankaree Govender (Carte Blanche Medical presenter): 'Like
cigarettes, hubbly bubbly smoking knows no boundaries. It has become
the in-thing for young people in restaurants, pubs, house parties, [on]
street corners, both in suburbs and in townships across South Africa.'
In Riverlea, Johannesburg, there's a surprisingly high rate of smoking
according to a recent study by the Medical Research Council.
Prof Angela Mathee (Medical Research Council): 'Just about every
second or third street corner there was a group of people of all ages
smoking these hookah pipes. The youngest child we saw was two
years of age, smoking a hookah pipe with his mother. When we spoke
to her, she had absolutely no notion that it might be harming her child.
She, in fact, thought the opposite was true - that it is good for his lungs,
strengthens his lungs, improves respiratory health, prevents
asthma...those [are] the kinds of things she was saying.'
Professor Angela Mathee is co-author of the study which will be
published in the South African Medical Journal. She found many myths
Some Useful Terms:
•Halaal - According to the information at our disposal, the product is free from Haraam/doubtful ingredients.
•Haraam - The product contains a Haraam ingredient and is therefore not permissible to consume.
•Mashbooh/Doubtful - The product contains a doubtful ingredient which some Ulama have declared as Haraam or
there is insufficient information about the detailed make-up of the product.
Some Haraam/Doubtful Ingredients
•Shellac (E904) - a resin from the lac insect. Used as a glazing agent on sweets, chocolates, etc. At times disguised
as simply “glazing agent” , polishing agent or confectioner’s glaze on ingredient labelling.
•Gelatin - derived mostly from hides of cattle and pigs. “Bovine” Gelatin simply means that the raw material is from
cows. It does not authenticate the Halaal status of the raw material used. Avoid unless confirmed to be from Halaal
animals.
•Carmine (E120) - a r ed colour obtained from female insects. Also referred to as Carminic acid or simply, “colours”
on ingredient labelling.
•Calf Whey - which is a bi-product of the cheese making process. Enzymes are used to coagulate the milk in cheesemaking
and sometimes these enzymes can be from non-Halaal animals and even pigs at times. This would render
the whey powder derived from such a process non-Halaal or at least doubtful.
and misconceptions about hubbly bubblies.
Prof Mathee: 'One young man, for example, showed us the package
and said, 'See, it says cherry on here. We are not smoking tobacco, we
are smoking cherries. And everyone knows that cherries and other fruit
is good for you.''
Of the 200 children they interviewed, 60% smoked hubbly bubbly.
Prof Mathee: 'Amongst groups of children of about seven, eight, 12
years of age, where they couldn't afford to buy a hookah pipe, they were
using plastic juice bottles and straws. And to make their own hookah
pipes as long [as] they had the discarded internal device. They would
then just adapt and engineer their own.'
24-year-old Clifford Ngakane has been smoking hubbly bubbly for six
years. He also believed it was harmless, until he read a pamphlet
distributed by the MRC.
Clifford Ngakane: 'After that pamphlet I really tried quitting, but then it is
difficult because the group that I am in, we smoke on a daily basis; so
for me not to do that is to cut aside from my friends. So I'm with my
friends daily. When I come from work I catch up with friends and we
smoke hookah.'
Devi: 'How many hours do you smoke at a time?'
Clifford: 'One-and-a-half hours, two hours max.'
Prof Mathee: 'A cigarette, on average, will take you seven minutes to
smoke. A hookah pipe you can smoke for an hour, two hours - and
that's the same as smoking a pack or two, or a hundred cigarettes in
one go.'
What's more, the pipe that smokers use is plastic and non-porous, so
none of the carbon monoxide is allowed to escape. A recent study in the
South African Medical Journal measured levels of carbon monoxide in
the blood. Five minutes after smoking, carbon monoxide increased by
40% in cigarette smokers, and by 482% in hubbly smokers.
Prof Mathee: 'And so the volume of carbon monoxide that you take in is
huge. And of course carbon monoxide is the same thing you use when
you want to commit suicide. You attach a hosepipe to your car's
exhaust system and you sit in the car and it is the carbon monoxide that
kills you.'
We conducted our own tests at Envirocon Instrumentation, using a
portable gas analyser from Japan.
We asked a seasoned cigarette smoker to blow a mouthful of cigarette
smoke into a bag. This was then extracted by the machine and showed
a sulphur dioxide, or SO2 reading of 6.6 parts per million and a carbon
monoxide or CO reading of 300.
We then asked a young hubbly smoker to do the same thing. A bagful
of hubbly smoke was attached to the machine and the results were
dramatic. The digits continued climbing until the CO levels were out of
range - over the limit of 500 - and the Sulphur Dioxide level was 10
parts per million.
(Continued from Pg. 1)
Dr Yussuf Saloojee (Executive Director: National Council Against
Smoking): 'It's got nicotine in it. It has got carbon monoxide, which is a
poison [and] which comes out of motor car exhausts. It has got things
like arsenic, which is used as a rat poison. It has got lead. It has got
chromium. So it has got most of the dangerous chemicals in tobacco
smoke and, as a result, people who use hookahs can get almost all the
same diseases that you get from smoking cigarettes.'
Dr Yussuf Saloojee is the executive director of the National
Council Against Smoking. He spelt out what those diseases
are.
Dr Saloojee: 'A person who uses hookah is at increased risk of
getting lung cancer, increased risk of getting bladder cancer
and mouth cancers. The same cancers are also caused by
cigarette smoking. You are more likely to get heart disease. We
know that even after one single session of using a hookah, if
you measure people's heart rate you'll see the
heart rate has gone up. That's because
the nicotine makes the heart work
harder.'
But try telling that to a group of teenagers.
These 15-year-old boys have been smoking
hubbly for years and believe it's safer than
cigarettes.
Ryan Seaton: 'To me I'd say that cigarettes are a lot
more dangerous than hubbly because on the box for
example there is a total between nicotine and tar. On the
box, it is 0% tar and 0.5% nicotine, which, in comparison
with a cigarette, is a lot more... is a big difference on the
box.'
Dr Saloojee: 'There is no tar in cigarettes until you burn it.
The tar is produced when you burn it. The same thing is true
of hookahs. The hookah tobacco doesn't have tar in it, but
the minute you burn it, you will cause cancer-causing
chemicals and other things that is called tar - the same
tar that you find on the roads.'
Also misleading is the nicotine content of 0.5% per
kg. The box weighs 50g, so the nicotine content is
250mg - 15 times more than a box of cigarettes.
Devi: 'What's so great about sitting around and doing
this?'
Jason Cowie: 'It doesn't really have a negative effect
because if everyone is doing it then why should it be
so bad for me to do it as well?'
Devi: 'So do you think that there are any negative side
effects at all?'
Jason: 'Of course there are negative
side effects. The thing is, it
is not as bad as
alcohol or cigarettes
"It "It is is better better for for you you to to consume consume sand sand rather rather than than eating eating anything anything Haraam" Haraam" (Ahmed)
(Ahmed)
Pg. 5 HALAAL GAZETTE Volume 7 Issue 1
or whatever like that.'
Devi: 'And when did you start doing the hubbly?'
Matthew Crawford: 'I started a year ago.'
Devi: 'How old are you now?'
Matthew: 'I am 15... I started when I was 14.'
Devi: 'And how did it start?'
Matthew: 'At parties. I just saw the hubbly there and people said it
wasn't bad so I tried to pull, liked the flavour, so I just started smoking
it.'
Hubbly tobacco comes in every flavour imaginable - all of them sweet
and fruity, making the taste more palatable to children. And because the
smoke is filtered through water, it also makes the inhalation much
smoother on the throat and lungs.
Sally Thorp (Head: Life Talk): 'There's this misconception that water is
going to filter out the 'nasties'. But there are other harmful chemicals
that are created through the burning of the coal that we are then going
to be inhaling into our lungs.'
Sally Thorp is the Head of Life Talk, a forum that deals with the many
challenges facing parents and children today. She believes hubbly
smoking is very widespread.
Sally: 'It's becoming a bigger issue as well because younger siblings...
we have seen a photograph of a three-year-old smoking hubbly! And
then teens... we got an email from a teen saying it is so funny, because
she blows instead of sucks.'
But Sally believes that parents, as well as children, need to be
educated.
Sally: 'And at many of our talks we say, 'Show of hands, please,
parents, who would give their child a packet of cigarettes to smoke in an
afternoon?' And they're absolutely aghast and horrified: 'Of course we
wouldn't!' 'But you're letting them smoke hubbly. Why?''
Devi: 'If we told you that smoking hubbly could give you lung cancer,
would you stop?'
Ryan: 'I wouldn't say I'd stop now... I'm still a bit young.'
Jason: 'It raises a thought in my head because my grandfather died of
cancer. It raises a thought, but it won't stop me from
smoking hubbly.'
Devi: 'The perception that hubbly
bubblies are safer than cigarettes
extends to restaurants as well.
Some restaurants offer hubbly
bubblies to their patrons, even
though they don't have
designated smoking areas,
thereby completely flouting antismoking
laws.'
Dr Saloojee: 'You cannot use the
hookah in an enclosed public
place, just as you can't sell tobacco
to anybody under the age of 18 years. That
is illegal and it is punishable by a fine of R50000.
The sad thing about South Africa is that parents are
buying the tobacco and then giving their children
the tobacco - and that's illegal.'
GOOD DEEDS ARE NOT ACCEPTED BY ALLAH
Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas narrates that, on one occ asion, the
following verse was recited in the presence of Rasulullah : “O
People! Eat from the earth, Halaal and pure.”
Thereafter, Hazrat Sa’ d ibn Abi Waqaas requested Nabi to make
Du’a to Allah that he becomes a “Mustajaabud da’waat” [ one
whose du’ as are always accepted]
Rasulullah replied, “O Sa’ d, consume Halaal & Pure and you will
become “Mustajaabud da’waat”. By the name of that Being in whose
control is the lif e of Muhammad , whenever a servant places a
Haraam morsel into his stomach, then for forty days no good action of
his will be accepted, and that flesh which is nourished by Haraam, the
fire of Hell is more deserving of it.” ( Ibn Katheer)
Consuming Haraam has an evil effect upon one’s children
Hazrat Shaik Ibraheem Shabrkhaytee Maaliki (rahmatullahi alayh)
states:
Once a person went to visit a Saint of Allah [a Wali]. He was met at
the door by a youngster in a very haughty manner. The visitor greeted
him in the formal Islamic manner but the arrogant youth ignored him
and did not respond.
The visitor was quite astonished and enquired about his attitude from
some people (who were around). They informed him that he was the
son of the Saint whom the visitor had travelled to meet. When the
Shaikh came out, the visitor was surprised to behold a most hum ble
man with very good manners. Immediately, the thought crossed the
mind of the visitor conc erning the disparity between such a pious,
saintly man and his insolent and disrespectf ul son.
The visitor was unable to contain himself and enquired of the Saint
about the pathetic behavior of his son. The Saint responded by saying
that one should not be surprised by this situation. He went on to
explain that once, when he had been hungry for sev eral days his
neighbour became aw are of it. That neighbour had been very close to
the king of the time so he fetc hed some food from the king’ s palace
for the Saint. After eating that food, the Saint had an intense desire
of fulfilling his sexual urge. He shared the bed with his wife and that
arrogant child was the outcome of that act of copulation.
The position of our Pious Predecessors had been suc h that if any
doubtful substance entered their stomachs, they used to forcef ully
vomit it out. In fact, due to doubts they even refrained from many
Halaal edibles. Hazrat Imaam Ghazzali (rahmatullahi alay h) quotes the
following statement of Hazrat Omar : “Out of 10 things we avoided 9
for fear of indulging in Haraam.”(Ihyaa)
Hazrat Khwaja Nizaamuddeen (rahmatullahi alayh) said:
“Somebody asked Hazrat Ibraheem ibn Adhum (rahmatullahi alayh) to
disclose the ‘Ism-e-Aa’zam’ (the Great Divine Name by means of
which Allah accepts du’as). He replied, “To keep the stomac h free
from Haraam morsels and the heart free from the love of the world is
the ‘Ism-e-Aa’zam’. Following such precautions, all the Names of
Allah become the ‘Ism-e-Aa’zam’. (Faw aaidul Fuaad)

Spices & Herbs : Uses & Cure
S pices are well-known as appetizers and are considered essential in the culinary art all over the world.
Apart from adding colour, flavour and taste, consumption of spices provides infinite health benefits. For instance,
spices intensify salivary flow. They cleanse the oral cavity from food adhesion and bacteria, they help to check
infection and protect the mucous membrane. Spices act as stimulants to the digestive system and help digestion in many
ways . Stroke frequency and blood pressure can be diminished or augmented by means of spices. Some may even be a
substitute for your costly beauty products and even medicines. Here are the Top 10 Kitchen spices that have healing
effects:
1. Fenugreek (Methi):
It is mainly used as a green leafy vegetable and seeds are used for seasoning and
preparing masalas . It also has many medicinal uses. Fenugreek seeds and leaves are
good for increasing breast milk in lactating women. It is also helpful for treating diabetes
and lowering cholesterol as it helps in reducing blood sugar levels . You can consume it
either by incorporating it in your diet or chewing its seeds (after soaking them overnight).
Fenugreek also helps in maintaining a good metabolism and prevents constipation. It
purifies blood and helps in flushing out harmful toxins .
2. Coriander leaves/seeds (Dhania) :
All parts of the coriander plant are edible, but the fresh leaves and the dried seeds are
commonly used in cooking. Seeds can be roasted or heated on a dry pan briefly before
grinding to enhance and alter the aroma. The leaves of coriander are stimulants and
tonics. They strengthen the stomach, relieve flatulence and increase secretion and
discharge of urine. Coriander seeds reduce fever and promote a feeling of coolness.
Coriander juice is highly beneficial in deficiencies of vitamin A, B1 , B2 , C and iron. One
or two teaspoons of coriander juice, added to fresh buttermilk, is highly beneficial in
treating digestive disorders such as indigestion, nausea, dysentery, hepatitis and
ulcerative colitis . It is also helpful in typhoid fever. Regular drinking of coriander water
helps lower blood cholesterol as it is a good diuretic and stimulates the kidney. It can be
prepared by boiling dry seeds of coriander and straining the decoction after cooling.
3. Chilies (Mirch):
Your eyes may start watering just with the name of it, but you would be surprised to
know that these spicy ones have healing power too. Since ancient times , chillies have
been used by healers to cure a variety of ailments. They have been used externally to
relieve pain and internally to cure anything from yellow fever to the common cold. The
active ingredient in hot red peppers is a compound called capsaicin, which gives it that
unique sting. Capsaicin triggers the release of endorphins in the brain, which has a pain
relieving effect similar to that of morphine. Their high vitamin C content can also
substantially increase the absorption of non-heme iron from other ingredients in a meal,
such as beans and grains.
4. Turmeric (Haldi):
Although usually used in its dried, powdered form, turmeric is also used fresh, much like
ginger. Turmeric is sometimes also used as an agent to impart a rich, custard-like yellow
color to the dishes . In Ayurvedic practices, turmeric is thought to have many medicinal
properties. Many use it as a readily available antiseptic for cuts , burns and bruises. It also
makes coping with diabetes easier. Raw Turmeric juice is used to treat hyper acidity and
indigestion. The juice of raw turmeric also acts as a blood purifier. Curcumin - an active
component of turmeric, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
properties, making it useful for treating arthritis ,
inflammatory conditions and possibly cancer. Turmeric
is also an inexpensive and indigenous beauty aid. It is used in the formulation
of some sun screens . Smearing with turmeric paste cleans skin
and beautifies it. Its antiseptic and healing properties
prevent and cure pimples.
What is worse than discovering a mouse in your loaf? …
Discovering that the tail is missing!
SHOCKED Stephen Forse went to make sarnies for his kids and found this
dead MOUSE embedded in his loaf of bread.
Stephen, 41, bought the Hovis Best of Both at Tesco and had already used
several slices when he made the gruesome discovery.
The dad of four, from Kidlington, Oxfordshire, said: "I felt quite ill - and even
worse when an environmental health officer said the tail was missing. I wondered
if we'd eaten that earlier."
None of the family fell ill. Premier Foods were fined £16,821 for failing to
maintain acceptable standards at their site in Mitcham, South London. A
spokesman said: "We apologise profusely."
McDonald's Meal shows no sign of
decomposing after SIX MONTHS
Looking almost as fresh as the day it was bought, this McDonald's Happy Meal is in
fact a staggering six months old. Photographed every day for the past half a year
by Manhattan artist Sally Davies the kids meal of fries and burger is without a hint
of mould or decay. In a work entitled The Happy Meal Project, Mrs. Davies, 54, has
charted the seemingly indestructible fast food meals progress as it refuses to yield
to the forces of nature.
Sitting on a shelf in her apartment, Sally has watched the Happy Meal with
increasing shock and even her dogs have resisted the urge to try and steal a free
tasty snack.
'I bought the meal on April 10, of this year (2010) and brought it home with the
express intention of leaving it out to see how it fared,' she said. 'I cho se
McDonald's because it was nearest to my house, but the project could have been
about any other of the myriad of fast food joints in New York. 'The first thing that
struck me on day two of the experiment was that it no longer emitted any smell.
'And then the second point of note was that on the second day, my dogs stopped
circling the shelf it was sitting on trying to see what was up there.' Expecting the
food to begin moulding after a few days, Mrs. Davies' surprise turned to shock as
the fries and burger still had not shown any signs of decomposition after two weeks.
When asked if their food was not biodegradable, McDonald's spokeswoman Danya
Proud said: 'This is nothing more than an outlandish claim and is completely false.'
A Question???
Q. If fast-food is so un-healthy and
not good for you, why does ZAMHA
certify take-aways?
A. ZAMHA ce rtifies take-aways as a matter
of necessity. Unfortunately, the “fast food
culture” has gripped our community and
therefore people are bound to go out and
eat whether certified Halaal or not.
Presently, Muslims are even seen dining at
non-Muslim owned outlets which are not
certified!
Therefore, as a “damage limitation”
exercise, ZAMHA certifies take-aways to
atleast try and ensure that fast-food crazy
people eat Halaal.
However, we do not promote the
eating out craze, nor do we encourage
people to eat out.

Note(1):Only the above establishments have been certified Halaal by the Zambian Halaal Certifiers. We do not guarantee the Halaal
status of any other outlet or abattoir. Note(2):We advise the Muslim community to only buy directly from the above establishments for
fear of contamination in the event of tearing of packaging, etc. In terms of the Shari'ah, all meat/ meat products must be purchased
through either Muslim outlets or through such Halaal outlets, which are supervised by Muslims. Non-Muslim Supermarkets/ Major Shopping
outlets unfortunately do not have any such authorised Muslim supervisory control. Therefore, Muslims should not purchase their
meat/ meat products from such avenues.Note(3):Please be reminded that whilst every effort is made to ensure that Halaal certificates
are issued after thorough investigations and inspections, the onus still remains on each and everyone of us to be vigilant at all times.
Halaal certifications do not excuse us from the responsibility to exercise our own judgment and discretion.Note(4):Become our eyes
you, the Muslim consumer, are our main concern. Therefore, your comments, criticisms and suggestions are welcome.
lhamdulillah, ZAMHA operations have increased substantially over the past couple of years, with abattoirs certified as far afield as
A Senanga, Namwala and Kalomo.
Whilst we at ZAMHA try our utmost to ensure that stringent ce rtification criteria are implemented, by placing Halaal supervisors at
critical areas and carrying out ad-hoc inspections of certified establishments, the onus still remains on each and everyone of us to
be vigilant at all times. Halaal certifications do not excuse us from our responsibility to exercise our own judgment
and discretion.
Therefore, an urgent appeal is made to each and every Muslim out there:
“Become our eyes and ears. If you notice any discrep ancies at any o f
ZAMHA’s certified outlets contact the ZAMHA helpline immedi ately!”
ZAMHA has never claimed to be perfect and it is virtually impossible to monitor
every Halaal certified establishment all the time. If the re are any
discrepancies anywhere, then we want them to be exposed in order for us
to rectify them. We do not believe in sweeping things under the carpet and
covering up scams!
By becoming proactive in the field of Halaal food consumption, we are
effectively asking you to help ZAMHA, and by doing so, you will be fulfilling
your responsibility as a Muslim to ensure that the entire community consumes Halaal.
Although we cannot reward you in monetary terms, your reward in the Hereafter will be
countless.
We would also like to take this opportunity to show our appreciation to all those
that are already actively and independently auditing all of ZAMHA’s operation and
thereafter informing ZAMHA of any discrepancies through the Halaal helpline, e-mail,
internet, etc. We urge such members of the community to continue their good efforts in
helping us realize our ultimate goal i.e. to ensure that all Muslims in our community have
access to foodstuff which is Halaal beyond doubt.
