Muslim consumers select acceptable 

food products in the supermarket. 

Products contain many ingredients 

in varying quantities, including trace 

amounts of Haraam or questionable ingredients. 

We hope this guide will serve 

as a handy and easy way of verifying the 

acceptability of food products. 

This list includes some of the more common 

ingredients that must be avoided or 

investigated before consuming them. Remember: It is not 

a comprehensive list. In the listing, we have specified ingredients 

as: 

HARAM / AVOID: These are unquestionably Haraam and are 

found in large percentages within a product. Examples are lard, 

which is 100% pork fat, or gin, which is hard liquor (alcoholic 

beverage). Muslims should not buy these products. 

INVESTIGATE FURTHER: These are used in small quantities 

and can contain components that come from Haraam animals 

or alcohol. Examples are whey, a dairy product, which is the 

liquid left after making cheese. The cheese may be made with 

enzymes from pork, calf, goat or micro-organisms. Therefore, 

the source of the whey has to be investigated to determine its 

suitability.

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING E-NUMBERS: 

The above E-Numbers can either be from a 

Halaal or Haraam source. For example, E- 

322 refers to Lecithin. Lecithin can either be 

from an animal source or a plant source. 

Soya Lecithin is a Halaal ingredient. The fact 

that E-322 is listed as one of the ingredients 

of a product does not make it Haraam. The 

source needs to be investigated to determine its status. 

Many famous chocolates, biscuits, etc from South Africa e.g. 

Kit Kat, Bakers Tennis, Marie Biscuit, etc, contain some of the 

above doubtful e-numbers. The fact that these doubtful E- 

Numbers appear in these products, does not mean that they 

are Haraam. These products have been investigated and the enumbers 

therein have been found to be from a Halaal source. 

Please, do not declare a product to be Haraam, just because an 

E-Number from the Doubtful/Investigate Further list appears in 

it. Contact the ZAMHA Helpline for further clarification. 

SOME USEFUL TIPS 

�Make sure that the products you 

buy have ingredients on their labels. 

If a product doesn't have a 

label with ingredients, DON'T BUY 

IT!!! 

�Do not purchase a new product 

without checking the ingredients list 

and comparing it with the Haraam/ 

Doubtful ingredients lists. 

�Be especially cautious in buying the following products: 

Cheese, cakes, cookies, french fries, candies, soups, sauce, 

margarine, crisps, yogurt, etc. If you are not sure about a 

product, contact the ZAMHA Helpline. 

�Do not buy any meat products from outlets which are not 

supervised by a reputable Halaal certifying body. Remember, 

money hungry abattoir owners will not think twice before compromising 

Halaal standards. Many a times, a Muslim is employed 

merely to give the outlet a “Halaal mark”!! Therefore, 

avoid such doubtful sources of meat. 

�Food cooked in the hygienic and pleasant surroundings of the 

home definitely contains more blessings and nourishment as 

opposed to take-away food. Therefore, as far as possible, takeaway 

food should be avoided. However the “eating-out” trend 

is something which has become a stark reality in our community. 

Therefore, if one has to eat 

-out, then avoid non-Muslim 

owned restaurants & takeaways 

unless they are adequately 

supervised by a reputable 

Halaal Certifying body. 

�Avoid restaurants & takeaways 

which sell alcohol and 

other Haraam items such as 

pork, doubtful meat, etc. 

� Remember the golden rule: 

IF IN DOUBT, LEAVE IT OUT!!! 

Muslims are required to eat pure (Halaal) foods. With the complexity 

of the food industry it is difficult for the Muslim consumer 

to determine the appropriateness of many food products. 

If in doubt regarding any product, please contact the 

ZAMHA Helpline to verify the source of the ingredient. Of 

course, there is no substitute for authentic, certified Halaal 

products. �

Due to the considerable amount of imported products coming on to the market, the ZAMHA in conjunction with other Halaal certifying 

bodies in the region have drawn up a Halaal/Haraam list of imported products. Although it is virtually impossible to encompass every 

product coming on to the market, we have tried our level best to include as many products as possible.

�In terms of the shari’ah all meat/meat products must be purchased through 

either Muslim outlets or through such Halaal outlets which are supervised and 

maintained by a bona fide, authorized Muslim organization. Non-Muslim supermarkets/Major 

shopping outlets unfortunately do not have any such Muslim 

supervisory control. We therefore discourage Muslims from purchasing their 

Meat products from such avenues.� 

�Eating out– whilst the eating out trend is growing, Muslims are urged to 

exercise great caution when frequenting non-Muslim restaurants, Pizza Parlours, 

etc. A vegetable Pizza or a Sea food dish can easily be polluted with wine, 

Haraam meat, other Haraam ingredients, and contaminated utensils. Remember, 

the Shari’ah does not permit you to eat from any place which serves alcohol. 

Even if the food may be Halaal, it is not permissible for a Muslim to consume 

from an outlet which also sells alcohol. Rasûlullâh � has mentioned, “Whoever 

believes in Allah � and the Last Day (Qiyamah), he should not eat from a table 

upon which alcohol is drunk (even if he does not partake of the alcohol himself).”

�Airline Food– A reinvestigation in to meals served on airlines has revealed 

that airline catering companies have inadequate arrangements for Halaal food 

preparation. Muslim travel agents are urged to petition the respective airlines to 

source meals from companies that have 100% regulated Halaal arrangements. 

Muslim Travelers! Remember that your vegetarian airline meal might have been 

prepared with the same utensils, etc used for other non-Halaal meals. Please 

exercise restraint. �
