CHEST PAIN EVALUATION UNITQuestions <strong>patient</strong>s ask … and some answersYour doctor has referred you to the <strong>Chest</strong> <strong>Pain</strong> <strong>Evaluation</strong> <strong>Unit</strong> (CPEU) at Webster Street Consulting Suites.Where is it?• 107 Webster Street, Ballarat.Why are you being referred to CPEU?• To rapidly evaluate the cause of your chest pain, or for a screening test of your cardiac health status.• This will involve a medical assessment by a cardiologist.What is involved?• Attend the Webster Street Consulting Suites and please bring with you all the medical <strong>info</strong>rmationgiven to you by your local doctor.• You may then have the following tests conducted at St John of God Hospital, Ballarat:o Exercise Stress Test – you will walk on an exercise treadmill at increasing speed and levelswhile a technician monitors your pulse, blood pressure and ECG heart tracingo Exercise Stress Echocardiogram – before and after the stress test, an ultrasound of your heart’sfunctioning will be takeno Blood Testso <strong>Chest</strong> X-ray• This may take up to 2 hours depending on how many tests are required.Do I take my medications?• Your local doctor will have <strong>info</strong>rmed you about which medications to omit prior to your test. If you areunsure please discuss this with you local doctor.• On the day of your test, do not take BETA BLOCKER medications including atenolol, metoprolol,propranolol or similar drugs ending in “–olol”. Some trade names for such medications are Noten,Tenormin, Lopresor, Betaloc and Inderal.• In addition, do not take the following SLOW CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKERS including diltiazem andverapamil. Some trade names for these medications are Cardizem and Isoptin.• Avoid smoking, tea, coffee for 3 hours before your test.• Have a light meal and drink 2 hours before.


What do I wear to my appointment?• Wear loose clothing which allows you to exercise freely, and a removable top, to permit monitoringleads to be attached to your chest. Runners or flat shoes are ideal. A nurse technician will assist youthroughout your stress test.• Avoid vigorous exercise on the day of your test, and have adequate rest during the night before.• If unable to keep your appointment, or if you have any other questions, please contact Webster StreetConsulting Suites Receptionist on (03) 5320 2498.Will my doctor get my results?• Your doctor will be <strong>info</strong>rmation of all your results including the diagnosis, treatment commenced andrecommendations for further care.What are the costs?• There will be some out of pocket expenses above the <strong>Medicare</strong> rebate, depending on the type of testsand medical assessment that you require.
