James M. Perelman Visiting Professorship in OncologyIn 1966, upon his death from cancer in his 29th year, the family and friends of James M. Perelmanestablished a memorial endowment fund which provides this annual Visiting Professorship inperpetuity. A life-long resident of <strong>Akron</strong>, he left behind his wife, Beverly; three daughters, Ellen,Julie and Shari Joy; his brother, Lawrence; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin M. Perelman.Mr. Perelman graduated from Cornell University and Western Reserve Law School and wasassociated with the firm of Lowers, Oestreicher, Perelman & Seamon of <strong>Akron</strong>. Since 1974, theJames M. Perelman Visiting Professor in Oncology has been dedicated to the continuing learningprocess for physicians working in the field of cancer treatment and prevention.Dr. Herbert E. Croft Visiting Professorship in HematologyIn 2000, Dr. Herbert Croft established an annual visiting professorship in Hematology to bring nationallyrecognized leaders in this important subspecialty to <strong>Akron</strong> <strong>General</strong>. The professorship will focusattention on blood and diseases of the circulatory system, as well as the coagulation process andproblems associated with other diseases and patient diagnosis.Dr. Croft will always be identified with The Cancer <strong>Center</strong> of <strong>Akron</strong> <strong>General</strong>, especially as itschairman and champion for more than 15 years. However, his first love and greatest interest isrelated to the field of Hematology. This visiting professorship is just one of the many ways Dr. Croft hasgiven back, and will continue to give, to the medical profession and to <strong>Akron</strong> <strong>General</strong>.Joan Ashley Fiffick Memorial Lectureship in NursingWhen the Joan Ashley Fiffick Memorial Lectureship was established in 1986, it was a tribute to aperson who truly conquered the demands of living with cancer and appreciated those who helped herthrough a most difficult journey. A singer by profession, Joan continued to perform and dobenefit concerts during her treatment and supported others who waged similar battles with cancer.She showed others with the illness how they, too, could harvest their strength and wage the battle, untilher death in 1985 at age 33.The Lectureship program, which has been held annually since 1986, is supported by theJoan Ashley Fiffick Endowment Fund of the <strong>Akron</strong> <strong>General</strong> Development Foundation. This Fund wasestablished at the request of the Ashley family to promote continuing education and stimulate innovativepractice in oncology nursing.The Carly Jayne Ensley AwardThis award was established in 2001 by the family and friends of Carly Jayne Ensley. In February of thatyear, Carly lost a 16-month battle with cancer that she faced with dignity and spirit. She attendedHoover High School in North Canton where she was a straight-A student, soccer player, and aparticipant in drama productions. Carly inspired everyone who knew her with courage and goodhumor in the face of personal trauma. This award will be given to a graduate student in an accreditednursing program within the state of Ohio who is conducting research in Oncology/Hematology.
