THE ADMIXTUREGUIDEPlasticisers•Accelerators•Super ConcentratesCement Colours•Primers & Bonding Agents

The Admixture GuideThe value of admixtures has been recognised for years. This has been largely as a result of Feb’sinnovative lead, which has given today’s builder new ways to modify the properties of cementbasedmortars, renders and concrete to suit the specific needs of any situation. In 1950 Febintroduced the world’s first commercially produced mortar plasticiser; FEBMIX ADMIX.Today Feb’s admixture technology has developed into a wide range of products, covering all ofthe following applications; Plasticisers, Accelerators, Retarders, Permeability Reducers andColourants which, where applicable, have been designed to meet the new harmonised EuropeanStandard BS EN 934 covering admixtures for concrete, mortar and grout which replaces BS 5075and BS 4887, which have now been withdrawn.Always at the forefront of innovation Feb lead the way in setting standards and ensures theappropriate materials can be selected and used on public works.050086-CPD-469071Air entraining/plasticising admixturefor masonry mortarEN 934-3, T.2Chloride content ≤ 0.01%Alkali content ≤ 0.5%PLASTICISERSWATERRESISTANTProductSelectionChartFEBMIX ADMIXFEBMIX PLUSFEBMIX DHFEBFLOW SUPERRENDAMIXFEBPROOF PLUSFEBOND SBRACCELERATORS FEBSPEEDWINTAMIXCOLOURING FEBTONE POWDERFEBTONE LIQUIDSUPER FEBMAX Mortar PlasticiserCONCENTRATESFEBMAX WaterprooferFEBMAX Frostproofer & AcceleratorPRIMERS & FEBOND PVABONDINGAGENTS GENERAL PURPOSE PVAPRIMER PLUSFASTRACK PRIMERNEWNEWNEWNEWNEWMortarConcreteRendersImproved WorkabilityFrost ResistanceImproved DurabilityImproved Water ResistanceIncreased Open TimeFaster SettingLow Temperature WorkingFreeze/Thaw ResistanceColourinǧ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌̌̌̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌̌ ̌̌̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌̌̌̌ ̌ ̌̌ ̌̌̌̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌̌̌̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ ̌ LiquidPowderChloride FreeMulti Purpose PrimerSurface Sealer (internal)Bonding AgentBuilding Material AdhesiveWaterproofing and TankingExternal RenderingConcrete Repair (external)Floor ScreedsPage 3Page 3Page 3Page 3Page 3Page 3Page 4Page 4Page 4Page 4Page 4Page 6Page 5Page 5Page 5Page 5Page 5Page 5Due to our policy of continuous product innovation and improvement it is the responsibility of the user to obtain the most up-to-date product and health & safety information. In view of widely varying site conditions and substrates, all products should be used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions andno liability can be accepted by the manufacturer for loss or damage as the conditions of use and any labour involved are beyond our control.rev. 0508 v.1MKM acknowledges that any accreditations/certifications are attributed to the brand/manufacturer.MKM has compiled this booklet from information supplied by manufacturers in good faith and accepts no responsibility for any errors or omissions in this literature.

Therefore, it is important to understand the actions offrost-proofing agents, which can be various. The use of air-entrainment plasticisers to BS EN 934 has been seen togive mortars an excellent resistance to freeze-thaw, together withprotection of the wet mortar down to -2˚C. With the three Feb productsfor cold weather work - WINTAMIX, FEBSPEED PLUS or FEBMAXFROSTPROOFER AND ACCELERATOR - the action of the admixturesaccelerates the initial set of the mortar, together with controlled airentrainment.Resulting in mortarhaving some structural integrity towithstand the expansion forces of themixing water when frozen. It also needs to be stressed thatno admixtures or products basedon Calcium Chloride should everbe used for masonry, these arenow banned.Even approved admixtures will only beeffective when used in conjunctionwith good practice for cold weather working. This means protection ofmaterials in store is of paramount importance.6RenderingFor all that it’s an everyday task, the application of rendering ispossibly one of the most misunderstood techniques in the constructionindustry, with only a fine line between technical correctness and the artof the renderer. One of the most frequently heard but misguided comments is that a wallneeds “a good strong render coat”! Which, in the vast majority of cases,is actually the last thing required. What really dictates the type of render to be used is the type and natureof the background. For example, if a strong render mix was applied to aweak substrate, the shrinkage of the render could easily cause abreakdown with the substrate. Here are some basic guidelines for successful rendering:• Use a rendering sand• The number of coats required in a rendered system is variable, and although it is sometimes possible to utilise only one coat, this practice is not recommended.• Undercoat should not exceed 15mm in thickness & subsequentcoats should never be thicker or stronger than preceding coats.• At least 2 coats are normallyrequired and more than oneundercoat may be necessary toeven out irregular substrates orin areas of severe exposureconditions.•On a 3 coat render system, thethickness would typically be 2-15mm first coat, 8-10mm secondcoat, and 6mm top coat.• When using waterproofing admixtures in the backing coats, it’simportant to remember that this will greatly reduce suction, so agood mechanical key must be provided for subsequent coats.• Renderings, especially thinner coats, can dry out too quicklyparticularly in warm summer conditions.• As premature and rapid drying can result in cracking andcrazing, the render should be kept damp and protected fromwind and sun for approximately 24 hours after application.
