6. Applications and functions selectionThis chapter is a guide to selecting the correct softstarter ratingand softstarter functionality for different applications. To make the right choice the following tools are used:The norms AC53a and AC53bThese norms help select the softstarter rating with regard toduty cycle, starts per hour and maximum starting current. The Applications Rating ListWith this list the softstarter rating can be selected dependingon the kind of application used. The list uses two levels, seeTable 10, page 33.The Applications Function ListThis table gives an overview of the most common applicationsand their challenges. For each application MSF 2.0solutions are proposed and a reference to the MSF 2.0menus, which can be used, is given. See Table 11, page 34.6.1 Softstarter ratingaccording to AC53aThe IEC 60947-4-2 standard for electronic softstartersdefines AC53a as a norm for dimensioning of softstarters forcontinuous running without bypass. The MSF 2.0 softstarter is designed to run continuously.210A : AC-53a 5.0 - 30 : 50 - 10Start CurrentStartDurationRun TimeStarts per hourOffTimeDuty Cycle = (Start Duration + Run Time)(Start Duration + Run Time + Off Time)Fig. 28 Duty cycle, non-bypass.The above example indicates a current rating of 210 Ampswith a start current ratio of 5.0 x FLC (1050 A) for 30 secondswith a 50% duty cycle and 10 starts per hour.NOTE! If more than 10 starts/hour or other duty cyclesare needed, please contact your supplier. In the Applications Rating List two commonly used levels ofAC53a are specified. These are also given in the technicaldata tables (see chapter 13. on page 111).(03-F58)Starts per hourOn-load factor (on-loadduty cycle as percentageof operation cycle)Start time (seconds)Start current (multiple ofFLC)Rated FLC (Full Load Current)of starter underprescribed conditions6.2 Softstarter ratingaccording to AC53bThis norm is made for bypass operation. The MSF 2.0 softstarteris designed to run continuously. In the event of highambient temperature or for other reasons, an external bypasscontactor can be used to minimize the power loss at nominalspeed. In the Application Rating List, one level of AC53b isspecified, normal with bypass.Fig. 27 AC53a rating example.210A : AC-53b 5.0 - 30 : 1440Off time (seconds betweenstarts)Start time (seconds)(03-F59)Start current (multiple ofFCL)Rated FLC (Full Load Current)of starter under prescribedconditionsFig. 29 AC53b rating example.Emotron AB 01-4135-01r2 Applications and functions selection 31
