VALEThe club is the poorer for the loss ofnumerous members and also immediatefamily of members in the season past.We all respect that without the support ofour families the hours of volunteer servicewould not be possible. During the yeargone by, all members’ thoughts andprayers were with the families of thefollowing valued friends who passed on.In October 2013 Long Service MemberLes Gillette lost a short battle with cancer. In March 2014 50 Year Member RayHavenstein left us after 60 years living inClovelly. Ray was 92. He was only 16when he left these shores to serve hisnation in Tobruk, El Alamein, Borneo &New Guinea. Also farewelled in March was ClairJames. Clair was the wife of Life MemberGeoff James Senior (dec.), mother ofGeoff Junior also a Life Member, andLong Service Member Peter. Clair’sgrandchildren Jethro (IRB Driver), Latham& Justin (Active Bronze members) andJessica (Nipper) also all owe much to hersupport. Geoff & Clair were engaged inthe club hall in 1948.In April, 50 year member Lennie Bennettwas lost to us. Lenny was Clovellythrough & through. Earlier in the yearLennie had lost his wife Pat Bennett (neeSimpson). Lennie & Pat’s sons Craig,Scott and Todd have all had longassociations with the club.As well in April, Clovelly “old timer” DaveBoone passed away. Dave had been inretirement up north at Iluka. April was nota good month with the passings also ofAssociate Member Greg “Hollywood”Hayson and former long time Surf Cluband Eskies member Eric Jamieson. In May Rennie Finch lost her Dad EricTurner while popular Randwick LifeguardFiona Borg lost her Mum Geraldine. Alsoin May, members were saddened onhearing of the passing of JennyMcNamee’s Mum in England. In June member’s thoughts were with theWheatley family after loss at a relativelyyoung age of Craig’s brother. We are all the better for having knownthem and the poorer for their departure.Rest in Peace.Clovelly SLSC 108 th Annual Report Page 31

NIPPERS REPORTA wonderful Nippers season started withlarge registration numbers, topping off at375.The weather was very good to us fromthe start and we managed to completeour education programme quickly andefficiently with the guidance of Jon Dysterand overseen by Chief Training OfficerJessica Wheatley.Successful SRC candidates getting their patroluniforms. The Randwick Shield in November atMaroubra was a huge success despitebeing held in a gathering southerly and Iam proud to say Clovelly Nippers brokerecords with over 140 junior competitorsparticipating in events. The Nippers reallydug in and gave it their all in a verysporting way, with positive feedback fromother clubs official’s on how well Clovellyparticipated and their great enthusiasm. The Clovelly/Tamarama Challenge was areally good day. Tamarama had a greattime with their president Guy very gratefulfor our hospitality and the BBQ provingvery popular. The Ironman was run as a day long eventthis season which proved to be a big hit.We set up the tent on the beach with anOlympics type theme. First, Second andThird receiving their trophies on the dayalong with a big cheer. The Sydney Branch Carnival at Maroubrain February was held in less thandesirable weather conditions yet onceagain our Nippers stood up well. We tookover 100 competitors which is a record forClovelly with one of the highlights of theday for me was seeing one of our U9schip her tooth as she dived for the flagand her friend run 30m to check she wasokay. Great Clovelly spirit on display. The Development camp for the U13s inDecember was a big hit, with SteveYeates coming back with a glowingreport. Clovelly had the largest group ofmembers present at the camp and theyalso made their presence felt by winningthe resuscitation event during the camp.Santa made everyone happy inDecember and the Nippers loved itespecially the 400 lolly bags he was kindenough to deliver.Vigilance on Australia Day from George LaNauzeClovelly SLSC 108 th Annual Report Page 32

The NSW State Championships at Uminasaw Clovelly take 12 competitors, again anew record. Reports from Michael Walkerand David Hession on their return werethat the Nippers once again did us proudwith their competitive spirit, wereoblivious to the poor weather and had thebest weekend. Our presentation day was a greatafternoon and big hit with children andparents. Everyone appeared to enjoy thegreat food available from the BBQ andthe bar setup also proved to be verypopular.I think the parents had as much fun asthe Nippers with it all running verysmoothly and the hoodies as gifts provingsought after items. In summary the season has been a hugesuccess and the wonderful feedback Ireceived made it all worthwhile. I thinknext year will be even better as we havesome great ideas to implement.A very big thankyou to all the AgeManagers and their assistants. Withouttheir invaluable work Nippers would notbe the roaring success it is and our futurelifesavers are getting the best start in theirlifesaving careers. I would not be able toperform my role as president without theamazing contribution of the entire Nippercommittee. A huge thank you to you all.You have made 2013/2014 season a veryenjoyable one.Bring on next season.Lee KilligrewClovelly Nippers PresidentClovelly SLSC NippersAge GroupNumber of Participants.Under 6 58Under 7 57Under 8 60Under 9 49Under 10 39Under 11 31Under 12 36Under 13 28Under 14 29Clovelly SLSC 108 th Annual Report Page 33

ESKIMOES REPORTIt was a great pleasure to welcomemembers, old and new, to thecommencement of the 2014 winterswimming season here at the famousClovelly Eskimos. This promises to be ayear of high excitement both in and out ofthe icy waters of arguably Sydney’s mosticonic and enduring swimming venue. Asour magnificent athletes resume weeklybattle each Sunday morning, accompanied, as always, by socialfestivity and culinary delights, an aura ofnostalgia will prevail over the next 4months as we dedicate the upcomingseason to 60 th birthday of “the igloodwellers”.If 2014 is the main course, 2013 was asumptuous entrée. In the water, ourweekly attendances averaged 71, a riseof over 30% from the previous year. Intotal, we attracted 141 swimmers overall,up from 112 in 2012. Significantly, therewere 41 time trialers in attendance whothen went on to compete in weekly races,up from 18. These figures fly in the faceof poor weather last season, indeed, some of our biggest days were staged onbiblically stormy mornings where racemarshalling had to be conducted in theboatshed for fear of loss of life.Away from Clovelly, The Eskimosperformed with distinction at TheMetropolitan titles in Bondi, and at TheNational titles in Perth. Both carnivalsconfirmed our lofty reputation andstanding within the winter swimmingfraternity. In high numbers and withboundless enthusiasm, our competitorsand spectators showcased our club’svalues magnificently. On the social front, “the party club thatswims” continued to excel. In addition tothe weekly post swim festivities thatmasquerade as presentations, severalevents stand out. The annual Clovelly toCoogee Pub Crawl in June was a rousingsuccess with record participants. In July, the club conducted a successful trivia anddisco night which was well attended andraised much needed capital. The nowfamed “Bruce Sinclair Shield” relayagainst the might of the Bronte Splasherswas held in August at Clovelly, and onceagain the Eskies prevailed in great style. The resurrection of the Sunday afternoonend of year presentation continued to bewell received and was heavily patronized. It seems a fitting way to cap off theseason and I encourage that format tocontinue. My thanks go to all those who contributedtowards the smooth functioning of theclub last year. Your efforts continue toensure the success of our season, andmost importantly, create a wonderfulexperience for all our members eachSunday. There are too many to list but weall know who you are.We continue to enjoy a wonderfulrelationship with Clovelly Surf Club. Ipersonally would like to thank Jim Kingand current President Paul “Boof” Smithfor their support and assistance.I look forward to 2014 with enormousexcitement and anticipation. I amconfident that our Diamond Jubileeseason will be as good as it gets.Peter SulmanEskimoes PresidentClovelly SLSC 108 th Annual Report Page 34
