Extreme Example #1: The original mooring system installed in 1973 in AyalaCove on Angel Island in San Francisco Bay consisted of 39 fore and aft sets ofmoorings, each designed for one boat. However, over the next 10-15 years, asmany an 400 boats sometimes rafted together on those 39 moorings, usually on aholiday weekend such as July 4th. You could literally walk across the cove steppingfrom boat to boat. Such gross overloading of the mooring system resulted in thedragging of the concrete anchor blocks, and a confusion of the previously organizedlayout of the moorings in rows by boat length sizes. The problem was eventuallyaddressed by modifying the moorings, and the instigation and enforcement ofmooring management by staff working at the cove.Extreme Example #2: During springbreak, thousands of college studentstypically flock to the stretch of theColorado River known as Parker Strip tocamp, picnic, swim and boat. Hundredsof boats raft together to form a floatingbridge across the entire width of theflowing river. This can cause extremelydangerous conditions leading todestruction of equipment, injuries,drownings, and access difficulties forofficers who are charged with boatinglaw enforcement, rescue and first aid.Boat Rafting at Copper Canyon, Colorado River......................................................................C8.5.1 ConnectionsCommentary:A potential trouble spot is the mooringbuoy. The mooring rode should pass upthrough the buoy and connect directly tothe bottom of a mooring ring on the topof the buoy. Tension loading will then betransferred from the boat mooring line tothe mooring ring on the top of the buoy,and then directly to the rode and down tothe anchor. The buoy is neutralregarding transfer of load. The mooringring must be loosely pinned to the top ofthe buoy to prevent inadvertent removalof the mooring ring from the buoy. The rode can be passed upthrough the pipe and connected to the lower end of the mooring ring. Theconnection and rode can then be lowered back down into the pipe conduit and themooring ring pinned to the top of the pipe.
