There are close to 50 skaters who belongto the BUFSC, and 35 of those are chosen to represent BostonUniversity on the competitive figure skating team. The team (madeup of freestyle skaters and ice dancers) competes in the EasternConference in the hopes of qualifying for the U.S. IntercollegiateTeam <strong>Figure</strong> <strong>Skating</strong> Championships. Boston University is the 2009and 2010 U.S. Intercollegiate champions. BU has a competitivesynchronized skating team that also competes in the EasternConference and has qualified for the U.S. Synchronized <strong>Skating</strong>Championships for the past several years. The team is ranked ninthin the nation and is comprised of 20 skaters. BU has ice timeavailable six days a week to support both teams. The figure skatingteam has a full-time coach, and the synchronized skating teamhas two coaches who work <strong>with</strong> the team twice a week. There areskaters who attend Boston University who are full-time students andare still actively competing at the regional, sectional and nationallevels. They supplement their training at the nearby <strong>Skating</strong> Club ofBoston. There are several other opportunities for skaters who don'twant to compete but stay involved <strong>with</strong> skating. BU has twoexhibitions and a test session every year, and there areopportunities to coach at nearby facilities. Marsha isa Miami University alumnae and competed on the Miamisynchronized skating team under the direction of Vicki Kornfrom 1999-2003. She is also the synchronized skatingdirector and choreographer for the Steel City Blades andRMU ISC synchronized skating development programs. TheRobert Morris University skating team is a club sport andpractices twice a week on Friday afternoons and Saturdaymornings. RMU supports the team financially and allowsskaters attending any Pittsburgh-area university and/orfour-year college to participate in the club/team.Participant skating levels range from novice- to senior-levelmoves in the field and dance. There is no minimum skatinglevel required to participate on the team. The synchronizedskating team participates in several Midwest and EasternSection competitions, including the Eastern SectionalSynchronized <strong>Skating</strong> Championships. The club alsoparticipates in Eastern Section intercollegiate competitions.RMU has been growing in size and popularity over the past10 years and has a wide variety of majors to offer. RMU islocated 20 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. In addition to coaches, the team ismanaged by a student-run executive board. The boardconsists of a president, vice president, secretary, treasurerand junior executive board member. This elected group ofstudents works on all administrative aspects of theorganization, from booking travel arrangements tocreating budgets, from planning fundraisers to reservingpractice ice. Serving on the board offers skaters anopportunity to have a leadership role on their team.Outside of the executive board, there are many otherways for skaters to develop in both life skills and skatingskills. All our skaters are full-time college students, and to us,that comes first. In having to balance the rigorousschedules of skating and school, our members learneffective time management skills.
