The <strong>Cambridge</strong> Bulletin BoardSafety Award recognises <strong>Cambridge</strong> commitmentThe <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong> has been acknowledged with a prestigious award for its contributionstoward community safety.The Minister for Emergency Services, Michelle Roberts, presented the Fire and Emergency ServicesCommunity Safety Award to the <strong>Town</strong>’s Community Safety Coordinator, Brian Rankin, at aceremony recently. The award citation recognised that the <strong>Town</strong> is a strong supporter <strong>of</strong> FESA’sCommunity Safety campaigns, and had reinforced relevant messages in the community throughvarious mediums such as community displays, <strong>Cambridge</strong> News, and brochures.<strong>Cambridge</strong> staff were also involved with FESA in emergency risk management planning for eventsat Subiaco Oval and the rugby World Cup. The <strong>Town</strong>’s best practice community safety model hadproduced an holistic program that aimed to effectively meet contemporary needs <strong>of</strong> thecommunity.<strong>Summer</strong> <strong>of</strong> Fun & Quarry AmphitheatreA broad range <strong>of</strong> activities and events are on the <strong>Town</strong>’s calendar during the next several weeks.Mark in your diary Monday January 26 for Australia Day celebrations at Perry Lakes Reserve in Floreat from 8am to 1pm; anExtreme Water Sports Fun Day to be held at the Bold Park Aquatic Centre from noon to 4pm on Saturday January 31; and the<strong>Cambridge</strong> Junior Triathalon, to be held on Sunday April 4 on the City Beach foreshore from 8am to 10am.For the more culturally-focussed members <strong>of</strong> our community, the Quarry Amphitheatre in Oceanic Drive, Floreat, is hosting thefollowing fine events: Carols by Candlelight on December 22 and 23; Jazz on the Rocks on Friday December 19; the Perth CityBallet performing Romeo and Juliet on January 9, 10, 16 and 17; and the West Australian Ballet from February 11 to 28.For further details, phone 9385 7144, or BOCS Ticketing on 9484 1133.Floreat Beach LifeguardAn increase in patronage at Floreat Beach following extensive upgrading <strong>of</strong> facilities in recent years has resulted in theappointment <strong>of</strong> a Lifeguard from Mondays to Fridays during the summer months.The service will operate between 9am and 3pm during December, January and February. On weekends and public holidays,patrols are carried out by volunteers from the Floreat Surf Club.The new mid-week Lifeguard service is an extension <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Town</strong>’s contract with Surf Life Saving WA and follows a Councildecision earlier this year.Local Studies CollectionA Local Studies Collection at the <strong>Cambridge</strong> Library, comprising almost anything related to the areas <strong>of</strong> Floreat, CityBeach, Wembley, West Leederville and the <strong>Cambridge</strong> sections <strong>of</strong> Jolimont, Subiaco, Daglish and Mount Claremont, willbe <strong>of</strong>ficially launched early next year.The Collection, including an Oral History component, is being developed by Local Studies Librarian Sally Paris and Oral HistoryCoordinator Wilma Mann. All information gathered will be collated and preserved for the use <strong>of</strong> community members wishing toundertake research, school assignments and other interests. Phone 9383 8999.<strong>Cambridge</strong> Cup 20<strong>03</strong>A full field <strong>of</strong> 128 players, including 32 pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, played in the <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>-Channel 9 Appealathon Pro-Amheld on November 16 at the Wembley Golf ComplexPr<strong>of</strong>essional David Elliott won the event, with a score <strong>of</strong> 66. Michael Dennis, Course Superintendent at Royal Perth Golf Club andState Amateur Team captain, took out the amateur section with a fine score <strong>of</strong> 67.Due to the continued generosity <strong>of</strong> sponsors and participants, $10,000 was raised on the day for Appealathon. The Australian-invented, innovative Aqualoc tap valves <strong>of</strong>fer savings <strong>of</strong> up to 45% in waterconsumption and power costs, through a reduction <strong>of</strong> hot water usage <strong>of</strong> up to 60% by maintaining a preciselycontrolled,even flow <strong>of</strong> water.A key claim <strong>of</strong> the Aqualoc tap valve is that, unlike other water-saving devices, it does not affect water pressure andits patented multi-ridging system in the base makes leaking taps a thing <strong>of</strong> the past.The Aqualoc <strong>of</strong>fer is available to residents until December 15. Simply phone Customer Services on 9347 6000.Swimming pool inspectionsThe tragic loss <strong>of</strong> young lives due to drowning in private swimming pools is an unfortunate reality that some WA families have tocome to terms with each year and is something that the Council wants to do everything within its power to avoid.Accidental child drowning is preventable and the Council takes its legal responsibility seriously by ensuring that each privateswimming pool is inspected every four years for compliance with pool safety standards. All pool owners are encouraged to inspecttheir pool fences, gates and other parts <strong>of</strong> their pool enclosures to ensure they satisfy safety requirements.Officers from the Royal Life Saving Society <strong>of</strong> WA, under contract to the <strong>Town</strong>, have begun inspections <strong>of</strong> <strong>Cambridge</strong>’s 2350 privateswimming pools. Letters are sent to each pool owner advising <strong>of</strong> the approximate inspection dates, so that an appointment can bearranged.
