2 Milling heads

The Heart of theMilling MachineWhat is the difference between asimple 3-axis milling machineand a high-end, 5-axis millingmachine for simultaneous machining?Exactly: the milling head. The heart of modern millingtechnology deserves specialattention. For every machiningoperation the performance, thematerials which can be machined, the removal rate and the surfacefinish all depend on the choiceof the right milling head. In addition, factors such as possiblemilling strategies, simultaneousmachining and the size of theworkpiece are all directly linkedto the milling head.An exciting subject and onewhich Zimmermann pays a lot ofattention to. For it is the strong, reliable heart which ultimatelydetermines the true value of amilling machine. All these criteria must naturallybe weighed up against theinvestment costs and the longterm return on investment.Head and heart in one:a Zimmermann milling head hasthe power and performance itneeds to be the heart of theportal milling machine. But –as befits any fine “head” – it isalso full of intelligence and goodideas.3

VH 6 –the Extreme HeadWe are proud to present themilling head to you which basicallyshouldn't exist: extremelystrong, extremely fast, extremelyaccurate, extremely flexible –and at the same time extremelyeconomical.Pure forceFor really tough milling operationsyou need pure power andan enormous torque. The drives completely basedon zero-backlash torque motorsensure maximum dynamicbehaviour and agility. To assure this force transmissionwhile at the same time keepingthe head dimensions relativelysmall, the torque drive is providedwith a reduction gear. This resultsin a slimmer head with a smallinterference contour in the lowerarea which is the only one of itskind on the market. Through thehigh drive torques, the rotaryaxes are perfectly suited for useas simultaneous axes or, closedloop controlled, they can be usedfor maintaining position.Maximum volumesThe responsiveness, agility andspeed of the digital drive, coupledwith the enormous driving forceof the milling head and the rightchoice of spindle, lead to chipremoval volumes in all materials, such as have never been seenbefore.Greatest flexibilityA milling head for 5-side machiningof any materials, fromroughing to superfinishing –and that under extremely economicconditions in one setup. This flexibility is achieved usingthe innovative Multiple SpindleTechnology (MuST ® ) fromZimmermann. To read moreabout this, see page 13.Fields of applicationThe unique combination of force, dynamics and flexibility makesthe VH 6 ideally suitable forall fields of application wheremaximum performance isrequired. The VH 6 is speciallydesigned for High PerformanceCutting (HPC) of particularlyhard and tough materials such astitanium, steel or cast iron. Its versatility makes it outstandinglyeconomical and userfriendly.FeaturesTorque drivesReduction gearMachinesFZ 50, FZ 42T ORQUEMOTORAutomatic Spindle ChangingSystem MuST ®Torque A- and C-axes 1 350 Nm3 standard spindles with up to50 kW / 200 Nm or 35 000 min -1Hydraulic clamping of bothaxes with 3 000 NmCoolant / MQL externally andthrough the toolDirect optical measuring system6 Milling heads

VH 5 –Pure High TechThe new VH 5 milling headrepresents the current technicalstate-of-the-art in high speedmachining.DynamicsThe combination of relatively lowweight and torque drives enablesa maximum dynamics.High speed unlimitedThe “fastest” head in theZimmermann range. Equippedentirely with torque drives, thishead / machine combinationachieves astonishing overallmachining times. On the onehand the direct machining timebenefits from the high headspeeds, on the other hand verylow non-productive times can beachieved with the VH 5 duringapproach and withdrawal, repositioning, etc.Intelligent extraction systemThe VH 5 is equipped with aunique, integrated extractionsystem. The system is based oninternal extraction. The particularhighlight is a suction hoodcontrolled by its own NC-axis.This enables efficient extractioneven with the most complicatedcontours. This is a great advantageparticularly for critical materialswhere chips and dust areconcerned such as carbon fibre.Fields of applicationThe VH 5 milling head is particularlysuitable when millingstrategies often used on themachine require extreme movementsof the head within a shortspace of time, as in simultaneousmachining. Here it can use itsadvantages of speed to the full.It is ideal for enormous chipremoval rates, typically in solidaluminium or carbon fibre materials. The fully direct driven headis also an extremely good matchfor the linear FZ 38 machinewhere, in combination with theextremely dynamic X-, Y- andZ-axes, it is able to achieve highoverall speeds.▲ The NC controlled extraction hood forinternal chip removal during machiningof complex contours.FeaturesTorque drivesTorque A-axis 650 Nm andC-axis 700 NmWeight only 530 kg1 standard spindle with up to52 kW / 45 Nm or 24 000 min -1NC axis for dust extractionClamping of the A- and C-axesRotational speed A- and C-axesof 360° / sCoolant / MQL externally andthrough the toolDirect optical measuring systemMachinesT ORQUEMOTORFZ 50 Duo, FZ 42, FZ 38, FZ 377

VH 4 –The MechanicalA huge spindle torque and thehigh clamping forces for therotary axes are what distinguishthis special milling and drillinghead. The torque giantThanks to its robust construction, the gear spindle of the VH 4 canachieve an unbelievable torqueof 800 Nm. Thus the machineis predestined for machining thehardest and toughest materials.Very large tool diameters can beused with the VH 4 head.Absolute precisionDespite its brute force, the VH 4is amazingly precise. Its enormoustorque at low speedsmakes the VH 4 particularly suitablefor classical rough machiningand subsequent milling operationsas well as drilling andthread cutting at low speeds.FeaturesW ORM&WHEELDRIVEHuge spindle torque of 800 Nmat low rotational speeds40 – 400 min -1Torque A- and C-axes 8 000 NmClamping of both axes with aclamping force of 20 000 NmIdeal for optional use withangle heads, etc.Coolant / MQL externally andthrough the toolDirect optical measuring systemMachinesFZ 50, FZ 50 DuoFurthermore, hard and toughmaterials such as titanium do notsupport high rotational speedseven during finish machining andcan thus be machined to a veryhigh quality finish directly withthe VH 4 head.Fields of applicationWherever rough machining ofthe hardest and toughest materialssuch as high alloy steels, cast iron or titanium is required.Large tools and heavy attachementsuch as angular heads arealso the domain of the VH 4.The FZ 50 Duo is a particularlyclever solution equipped withtwo VH 4 milling heads or asecond fork head with HF spindlefrom the Zimmermann modularrange for rough and finish machiningin one setup.8 Milling heads

VH 3 –The AllrounderThe linchpin of the Zimmermannmilling head range. There is reallyhardly any job which cannotbe done by this high performancehead. An allrounder in thebest sense of the word –strongand cost-effective.Universal use“If Zimmermann were onlyallowed one milling head then itwould be the VH 3.” This is anapt description of the VH 3. Extremelyrobustly built, the VH 3 canbe used on all the heavier Zimmermannmachines. The VH 3has been designed specifically formodern 5-axis simultaneous machining.Strong holding torquesfor the A- and C-axes thereby guaranteesafe and accurate continuouspath control. Fast drivesand very strong high performancespindles ensure high machiningperformance during modernHSC machining. Precisionworm and wheel drives ensureaccuracy and damping.Unlimited powerTorque of up to 2 000 Nm is availablein the rotary axes and themilling spindle has a power of60 kW and 95 Nm – more thanenough for all machining tasks.A new designThe VH 3 has been completely redesigned:■ Small interference contour forbetter access.■ Water-cooled worm andwheel drive for higher accuracyand elimination of thermal influences.■ Higher swivel speeds for shorteroverall machining times.■ Clamping of rotary axes formore rigidity during rough machining.■ Automatic grease relubricationfor long-life cycle and costeffectiveness.Fields of applicationIdeal when a wide range of machiningapplications needs to becovered by one head. Today rapidlychanging tasks are commonand difficult to plan in advance. The extremely versatile VH 3 isperfect in this situation.FeaturesW ORM&WHEELDRIVEPrecision worm and wheel drive(water-cooled)Standard spindle with 60 kWand 95 NmUniversal high-performanceheadHydraulic clamping of theA- and C-axesCoolant / MQL externally andthrough the toolOptical direct measuringsystemGrease relubricationMachinesFZ 50 Duo, FZ 38, FZ 37, FZ 359

VH 1 –Perfectly SimpleHow light can a milling head be?That depends on the application! This extremely light milling headwas developed especially for theFZ 25 and FZ 15 portal millingmachines.Less is moreThe idea behind the developmentof the ultra light portalmilling machines is quite simple:Why use very heavy and massiveportal milling machines tomachine lightweight materialslike polyurethane? It makes nosense at all. Also the accuracyrequired for the typical applicationsof these machines is lessthan what would be technicallypossible. This is exactly thephilosophy behind the VH 1 millinghead. It is a true minimalist!Large volumesWhat is decisive when machiningpolystyrene, light plastics andhigh-resistance foam is usuallythe large volume of material tobe removed. Thus a dynamicmilling head is required which isspecially suited to the lightweightconstruction of the machine.accuracy and have a high structuralstiffness. With a systematiclightweight machine construction,a heavy milling head wouldhave the disadvantage ofcausing bending and torsion ofthe portal. The VH 1 is the perfectchoice. Thus especially with theFZ 25 extremely large workingareas can now be achieved.Fields of applicationParts made of polystyrene, blockboardor light plastics call forlightweight, cost-effective millingmachines. This market segmentis served by the FZ 25 and FZ 15milling machines. The appropriatemilling head is the VH 1.Working rangesLarge models made of lightweightmaterials mostly call forlarge working ranges. DriveTechnologyOne of the most importantcriteria for the quality of a millinghead is the technology used todrive the A- and C-axes. Severaldifferent concepts each withdifferent strengths and weaknessescompete in this segment.Zimmermann has mastered allthe different drive techniquesand is constantly on the look outfor new trends in order to takeadvantage of the best innovationsin the future. For each type ofmilling head and each applicationexactly the right drive is selectedwhich is optimally suited for thework to be carried out.T ORQUEMOTORW ORM&WHEELDRIVEHARMONICDRIVEDrive technology comparisonFeed rate ■ ■ ■Acceleration ■ ■ ■Surface finish ■ ■ ■Energy requirement ■ ■ ■Safety by power failure ■ ■ ■Life expectancy ■ ■ ■Crash sensitivity ■ ■ ■Ease of maintenance ■ ■ ■Investment costs ■ ■ ■Repair costs ■ ■ ■Cost effectiveness ■ ■ ■Better■ ■ ■ ■ ■ WorseTorque driveComplete direct driven millinghead for applications requiringthe highest speeds and accelerations:■ A lot of repositioning and toolchanges■ True, constant simultaneousmachining on fast machinesAdvantages■ Extremely fast■ High axial acceleration■ Hardly any wearVH 6 and VH 5 milling headsWorm and wheel driveWell balanced drive system forhigh force transmission andaccuracy. The MuST ®Milling HeadThe VH 6 milling head is equippedwith Zimmermann's innovativeMultiple Spindle Technology(MuST ® ).This system offers several keyadvantages:■ Roughing and subsequentfinish machining of heavymaterials such as titanium, steeland cast iron can be carriedout on a machine in one setup. This reduces setup time and thusalso production costs.■ Investment in a secondmachine is unnecessary.■ Potential for doing additionaltasks other than milling in thesame setup.■ Changing the spindle insteadof the milling head offers advan-tages in terms of repeatability, reliability (fewer interfaces) andcost.■ The high finish machiningprecision of the machine is notaffected by the HSC technologyused for rough machining.Modular system■ Stage 1: One spindle permanentlymounted in the millinghead (Standard).■ Stage 2: Semiautomaticspindle change (Optional).■ Stage 3: Fully automaticspindle change (Optional) –enabling unmanned shifts.MuST ® Milling spindlesThree MuST ® milling spindles ofdifferent specifications areavailable for all areas of application:■ Roughing spindleSpecially designed for HSCmachining of castings, steel andtitanium.■ Universal spindleFor all machining of aluminium, composite materials and forlight rough machining of steeland castings.■ Finishing spindleHigh frequency spindle for finecontouring and highest qualitysurface finishes.High-EndMilling SpindlesZimmermann milling heads areequipped with high performancestandard milling spindles madeby Weiss and Fischer. For almostall milling heads there is achoice of spindles available (forroughing, finishing as well asuniversal spindles). Naturally, forparticular applications, otherspindles can also be specified. As a standard our spindles aresupplied with a unique monitoringsystem consisting of a vibrationsensor, bearing temperature, motor temperature. The millingspindles supplied by Zimmermannare carefully tuned to the particularapplication, taking the millingmachine, milling head andmilling spindle into account.Universal spindle VH 3Competitor's universal spindleMd [Nm]100104 Nm95,5 Nm80604020Aluminiummachining60 kWP [kW]10080604020000 4000600014000 22000n [min -1 ]When choosing a spindle, it isoften less the pure spindle performancedata than the sum of allthe performance parameters inthe relevant speed range for theparticular application which isimportant. An example is the comparison of theuniversal spindle of the AC 3 milling headwith a competitor's spindle aduring highvolume machining of aluminium. At first sight, the competitor's spindleappears to have a higher torque. However, what is important is that the VH 3 spindledelivers its high torque over the whole ofthe speed range concerned. The performance data and diagrams of allZimmermann milling spindles are shownon pages 14 to 17.13
