ACCOMMODATION<br />
All the accommodation in this<br />
brochure has been quality assessed<br />
by either Visit Britain (Enjoy England) or<br />
the AA, or has recently applied for a<br />
rating and is awaiting assessment.<br />
Accommodation is inspected by an<br />
impartial assessor and is awarded one to<br />
five stars to reflect the overall quality <strong>of</strong><br />

SERVICED<br />
There are two grading schemes:<br />
Hotels<br />
In addition to the star grading, hotels are<br />
graded in the following categories: Hotel;<br />
Small Hotel; Country House Hotel, Metro<br />
Hotel, Town House Hotel; Budget Hotel.<br />
Guest accommodation<br />
In addition to the star grading, guest<br />
accommodation is graded in these<br />
categories: Guest accommodation; Bed &<br />
breakfasts; Guest houses; Inns;<br />
Farmhouses; Restaurants with rooms.<br />
Special awards<br />
Hotels and guest accommodation<br />
which meet exceptional<br />
quality standards can be awarded Gold<br />
and Silver awards by Visit Britain or red<br />
and yellow star awards by the AA.<br />
Food awards<br />
AA Rosettes can be awarded to<br />
establishments <strong>of</strong>fering outstanding<br />
food. Visit Britain also now allocates<br />
‘breakfast awards’.<br />
COMPLAINTS Always try to let the proprietor/<br />
manager <strong>of</strong> an establishment know about any<br />
concerns or difficulties you are encountering. For<br />
any issues that remain unresolved that you would<br />
like to bring to our attention, please write to:<br />
SELF-CATERING<br />
Self-catering accommodation is graded 1<br />
to 5 stars based on an overall assessment<br />
<strong>of</strong> the layout, quality, range and cleanliness<br />
<strong>of</strong> the property and its facilities.<br />
Hostels<br />
Includes youth hostels, independent<br />
hostels, bunkhouses and camping barns.<br />
Hostels are graded one to five stars.<br />
Higher rated accommodation <strong>of</strong>ten<br />
provides en-suite rooms.<br />
Holiday, Touring and Camping Parks<br />
and Holiday Villages<br />
Visit Britain awards star ratings reflecting<br />
the overall quality <strong>of</strong> parks from one to<br />
five stars. The AA awards Pennants on a<br />
five point scale according to their style<br />
and range <strong>of</strong> facilities.<br />
OTHER QUALITY SCHEMES<br />
Welcome schemes<br />
These UK-wide<br />
schemes give<br />
walkers, cyclists, pet owners and families<br />
the confidence that they are booking<br />
quality accommodation that meets their<br />
particular needs. Simple common criteria<br />

Where you see this logo it<br />

THE NATIONAL ACCESSIBLE<br />
SCHEME<br />
The National Accessible Scheme for selfcatering,<br />
parks and serviced<br />
accommodation includes standards for<br />
hearing and visually impaired guests<br />
(visit www.enjoyengland.com) in<br />
addition to standards for guests with<br />
mobility impairment (see below).<br />
Mobility<br />
Level 1 – Typically suitable for a<br />
person with sufficient mobility<br />
to climb a flight <strong>of</strong> steps but would<br />
benefit from fixtures and fittings to<br />
aid balance.<br />
Level 2 – Typically suitable for a<br />
person with restricted walking<br />
ability and for those that may need<br />
to use a wheelchair some <strong>of</strong> the<br />
time.<br />
Level 3 (independent) –<br />
Typically suitable for a person<br />
who depends on the use <strong>of</strong> a<br />
wheelchair and transfers unaided to<br />
and from a wheelchair in a seated<br />
position.<br />
Level 3 (assisted) – Typically<br />
suitable for a person who<br />
depends on the use <strong>of</strong> a wheelchair<br />
in a seated position. They can<br />
require personal/mechanical<br />
assistance to aid transfer (e.g. carer,<br />
hoist).<br />
Access exceptional –<br />
Attained by providing for<br />
all levels <strong>of</strong> mobility impairment<br />
listed above with reference to British<br />
Standards BS 8300:2001 as well as<br />
fulfilling additional, more<br />
demanding requirements.<br />

HOSPITALITY ASSOCIATON<br />
Member establishments are<br />
regularly inspected by the Association,<br />
and must comply with the Association’s<br />
high standards.<br />
