GUIDE TO ACCOMMODATION QUALITY GRADINGS QUALITY-ASSURED ACCOMMODATION All the accommodation in this brochure has been quality assessed by either Visit Britain (Enjoy England) or the AA, or has recently applied for a rating and is awaiting assessment. Accommodation is inspected by an impartial assessor and is awarded one to five stars to reflect the overall quality of the experience. SERVICED There are two grading schemes: Hotels In addition to the star grading, hotels are graded in the following categories: Hotel; Small Hotel; Country House Hotel, Metro Hotel, Town House Hotel; Budget Hotel. Guest accommodation In addition to the star grading, guest accommodation is graded in these categories: Guest accommodation; Bed & breakfasts; Guest houses; Inns; Farmhouses; Restaurants with rooms. Special awards Hotels and guest accommodation which meet exceptional quality standards can be awarded Gold and Silver awards by Visit Britain or red and yellow star awards by the AA. Food awards AA Rosettes can be awarded to establishments offering outstanding food. Visit Britain also now allocates ‘breakfast awards’. COMPLAINTS Always try to let the proprietor/ manager of an establishment know about any concerns or difficulties you are encountering. For any issues that remain unresolved that you would like to bring to our attention, please write to: SELF-CATERING Self-catering accommodation is graded 1 to 5 stars based on an overall assessment of the layout, quality, range and cleanliness of the property and its facilities. Hostels Includes youth hostels, independent hostels, bunkhouses and camping barns. Hostels are graded one to five stars. Higher rated accommodation often provides en-suite rooms. Holiday, Touring and Camping Parks and Holiday Villages Visit Britain awards star ratings reflecting the overall quality of parks from one to five stars. The AA awards Pennants on a five point scale according to their style and range of facilities. OTHER QUALITY SCHEMES Welcome schemes These UK-wide schemes give walkers, cyclists, pet owners and families the confidence that they are booking quality accommodation that meets their particular needs. Simple common criteria for the scheme have been introduced along with several activity-specific requirements. Mobility Level 1 – Typically suitable for a person with sufficient mobility to climb a flight of steps but would benefit from fixtures and fittings to aid balance. Level 2 – Typically suitable for a person with restricted walking ability and for those that may need to use a wheelchair some of the time. Level 3 (independent) – Typically suitable for a person who depends on the use of a wheelchair and transfers unaided to and from a wheelchair in a seated position. Level 3 (assisted) – Typically suitable for a person who depends on the use of a wheelchair in a seated position. They can require personal/mechanical assistance to aid transfer (e.g. carer, hoist). Access exceptional – Attained by providing for all levels of mobility impairment listed above with reference to British Standards BS 8300:2001 as well as fulfilling additional, more demanding requirements.
