Rolex Swan Cup 2006The EventEvery other September the top international sailors and Swan owners from around the world gather inPorto Cervo for a week of intense competition at the Rolex Swan Cup. This year, the 14th edition of thisprestigious event organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda will be held from September 11 - 17.Nautor’s Swan anticipates that more than 100 Swans will be in attendance, made up of performancecruising and racing models, including five Swan 601s, over twenty Swan 45s and four new Swan 100s,making their debut in this competition. This year marks Nautor’s 40th anniversary and, in honour of this, the first-ever Swan, the Swan 36Tarantella, will be in Porto Cervo. Nautor will also present the Swan 66, it’s 40th anniversary model anda true performance cruiser. The Rolex Swan Cup is one of the most important events linked to the Sardinian sailing paradise ofPorto Cervo. Since the 1980s, Sardinia has been the preferred venue for competition of the world’smost luxurious and performance-oriented sailing boats. Attracted by the flat water, the likelihood ofexcellent breeze and stunning mountainous backdrops, the Costa Smeralda is amongst the top racingvenues in the world. The Rolex Swan Cup race week traditionally includes a variety of racecourses around the stunningnorth-eastern coast of Sardinia. The courses are designed to make best use of the daily weather conditions.Winds in September can vary between light thermally-induced sea breezes to the famous Mistralwhich can blow from the northwest at up to 45 knots at times. Whatever the weather, Swan yachts areequipped to deal with the conditions that crews experience in the north of Sardinia.Often the courses will take the fleet through the Maddalena Archipelago just to the north of PortoCervo. Narrow straits, rocky outcrops, shifting winds and tight competition set against some of the mostspectacular scenery imaginable, test the crews’ nerve, skill and speed to the utmost. And, while theremay be hot professional level racing at one end of the fleet, there is also a more sedate pace at theother end. Many Swan owners are more attracted by the social element of the event and make the bestuse of their boat to meet the crew’s mood everyday, whether it be racing or enjoying the picturesquebeaches and perfect swimming conditions. The races never last more than a few hours, even though significant distances are often covered bythese ocean-going thoroughbreds before the fleet returns to their moorings in the idyllic setting of PortoCervo.Ashore every evening the Swan fleet, the crews, and their guests enjoy the special Sardinian hospitalityin the unique setting of Porto Cervo. The Rolex Swan Cup and a Rolex timepiece are presented to theoverall winner of the event at the end of the week.

Rolex Swan Cup 2006A Developing PortfolioAs a result of these racing triumphs owners soon demanded upgrades to their existing Swan 36models; in response Nautor’s Swan produced the Swan 37. As the market trend moved towardsbigger models the company also diversified range into a 43-foot model. In contrast to this overwhelming success, fate was soon to deal a blow that would have ramificationsfor years to come. Shortly before Christmas in 1969, the Assembly Hall of the Nautor’sSwan boatyard burned to the ground destroying a dozen hulls in various stages of production. As a result, Koskenkyla was forced to sell stakes in Nautor to finance rebuilding.Nautor’s Swan continued to expand despite this setback and fulfilled the expectations placedon it at the beginning of its history. With the production of the Swan 55, Nautor first entered themarket in which it now thrives; large, luxurious yachts with opulent interiors that are fast, seaworthyand a joy to sail. This continued growth was punctuated with racing successes for Swans around the world, thehighlight of which was victory for Sayula II, a standard Swan 65, in the first Whitbread Round theWorld Race in 1973/74. These successes were later enhanced by Nautor’s Swan’s signatureregattas, such as the Rolex Swan European and Rolex American Regattas, and its flagship biennialRolex Swan Cup – proving the racing capabilities of these yachts.Nautor’s Swan entered a new era in 1979 with the appointment of German Frers as designer, who continued to demonstrate a good balance of competent racers and comfort in his design. To this day, the Frers design office continues to push the boundaries, whilst maintaining the hallmarkof Swan. One of the most exciting examples in recent years was the birth of a new breedof Swan in 2001 - the Swan 45. This model saw Nautor’s Swan embark on its most ambitiousproject to date, creating a true racing yacht with its own class, which quickly became globallyrecognised. Its success soon led to the establishment of Nautor’s latest one-design model, theSwan 601, which will provides one of the first owner / driver class within this size range.Today the expansive Swan portfolio charts the journey that Nautor’s Swan has travelled, from theinaugural Swan 36 to the ambitious Swan 131.
