1983.P.10.1Carved wooden frontlet inset withabalone shell. The generalconfigurations of this piece mirrorthose of piece no. 69 in INDIAN ARTOF THE NORTHWEST COAST by BillHolm & Bill Reid. The long sides of thepiece are parallel while the upper &lower edges are curved. The figuresare carved in relief; the upper figurehas anthropomorphic features, thelower is the upper face of a wolf.These are flanked by outstretchedhands above, feet or paws with curveddigits below. The border surroundingthese figures on 3 sides is paintedblue-green (possibly a copper-derivedpigment, ibid:173) & inset with abaloneshell, some insets showing drill holes.Hands, cheeks, chest of upper figurepainted red. Form lines black; eyerecesses light blue. Numerous holesnear all 4 corners, 8 which penetrateall the way through (including an emptyrepair hole). 2 splits in the lower edge,the longer split in the right border being7.5 cm long. An attempt has beenmade to repair these by hammeringpairs of pegs into holesflanking the splits which anchor binding chords. A peg is missing froma hole on the larger split. As the pegs have been painted over, theyare probably an original feature. Blue-green paint is very much worn.Black worn off of protruding surfaces. Screw eye in the upper back.Old number in white at the back lower left corner "2911". Paper tagalong the back side which reads "TLINGIT FRONTLET FROM SITKAALASKA, KIKSADI CLAN CA; 1840". Exhibit.
