Bob Rafelson is one of the leading fi gures in the American cinema having<br />

distinguished himself over the past 3 decades as a director, writer and producer<br />

of a group of fi lms remarkable for their path breaking artistic excellence. Aft er<br />

studies at Dartmouth and an apprenticeship with David Susskind, Desilu, and<br />

Columbia Screen Gems, Rafelson created and produced the TV cult hit THE<br />

MONKEES. (Emmy Winner – best comedy).<br />

He went on to make his feature fi lm directorial debut with HEAD, co-written<br />

by himself and Jack Nicholson, starring Th e Monkees. Rafelson then began<br />

BBS Productions with his partners Bert Schneider and Steve Blauner. Th at<br />

company would prove to be the spawning ground for an artistic renaissance<br />

in American fi lmmaking, producing such outstanding fi lms as EASY RIDER,<br />

FIVE EASY PIECES, THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, and the Academy Award<br />

winning documentary, HEARTS AND MINDS. FIVE EASY PIECES, directed<br />

by Rafelson and for which he won the award for Best Director from the New<br />

York Film Critics, is frequently cited by critics and fi lm afi cionados as one of<br />

the fi nest American fi lms of the Seventies. Rafelson’s next fi lm, THE KING OF<br />

MARVIN GARDENS, starring Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dern, and Ellen Burstyn,<br />

is also lauded as one of the remarkably innovative fi lms of the ‘70’s. In STAY<br />

HUNGRY, Rafelson again demonstrated his extraordinary ability to identify<br />

and nurture promising young talent, providing an early break through for Jeff<br />

Bridges, and fi rst movie roles for Sally Field and Arnold Schwarzenegger. THE<br />

POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE from a screenplay by David Mamet,<br />

starred Jack Nicholson and the still relatively unknown Jessica Lange, along<br />

with Anjelica Huston, in a role that would precipitate her rise to prominence.<br />

BLACK WIDOW, starring Debra Winger and Th eresa Russell, saw Rafelson<br />

stretching the boundaries of the psychological thriller. Shot on location in<br />

Africa, his next fi lm was MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON, an ambitious fi lm<br />

chronicling the 19th century search for the source of the Nile River by British<br />

adventurers and scholars Sir Richard Burton and John Hanning Speke. Th is<br />

was followed by MAN TROUBLE starring Jack Nicholson and Ellen Barkin.<br />

BLOOD AND WINE marked Rafelson’s eighth fi lm with Jack Nicholson, fi ve<br />

of which he directed. It is a study that began with what Roger Ebert has called<br />

“a masterpiece of heartbreaking intensity.”<br />

In addition, Rafelson directed POODLE SPRINGS for HBO, an adaptation<br />

of a Raymond Chandler story, written by Tom Stoppard. Finally he’s done a<br />

few turns in front of the camera, acting in Henry Jaglom’s ALWAYS and Mike<br />

Figgis’ LEAVING LAS VEGAS.<br />

As a result of his enormous contribution to American Film, Rafelson is<br />

oft en invited to international festivals. He frequently teaches a masterclass<br />

(“Confessions of a Film Director”) with clips from his more familiar fi lms.<br />
