President’s MessageDr. Cynthia Jackson-HammondDear Alumni and Friends,Few things are as rewarding as the opportunity toserve, and I am very proud to serve as Central StateUniversity’s eighth president. With nearly 2,200 students,428 faculty and staff, and 16,000 alumni worldwide,we are a large family. I feel the warmth. CentralState alumni are not only part of a large family, theyare also a powerful network of leaders, doers and philanthropists.I appreciate the support you give to theUniversity. In recent weeks, I have shared my vision for the Universitywith many of our constituencies. My wish foralumni is that you become personally engaged in recruitingoutstanding students for matriculation at CentralState University. I also believe we have a duty toencourage those students to perform well in school andtake full advantage of the educational experiencesCSU provide. We are seeking students who not onlymeet the University’s standards, but also exceed them, both in and out of the classroom. We believe student success is connected to studentimage. Central State’s student image is aligned withthree key tenets: service, protocol and civility. Here iswhat we mean when we talk about these tenets:• Service - Students will make a commitment to thebetterment of the University and the greater community.• Protocol - Students will adhere to best practicesfor accomplishing their goals.• Civility - Students will exhibit active respect forone another, our past and our future. There is another importantcomponent of studentsuccess. Together,we must also work toprovide our studentswith the financial supportthey need to remainin school andgraduate from the University.I ask that youcontinue to support theUniversity financially, and grow your supportto ensure the availabilityof scholarshipfunds. I also ask you tochallenge your classmateswho are notlisted in this Institutional Advancement Year-End Reportto give generously to their alma mater.Again, thank you for your support of Central StateUniversity.“Change isCentral”2

Vice President’s MessageAnthony FairbanksExecutive Director,Central State University FoundationFY12 saw Central State University grow to 2,200 studentsand increase its academic offerings to include theUniversity College and a College of Science and Technology. Also, we dedicated two new residence hallsand we are preparing to break ground for a $31 millionconstruction project to complete the long awaitedUNIVERSITY CENTER. This facility, when completed, will provide a cafeteria to accommodate 1,000students, a food court, a black box theatre to host variousstudent plays, counseling offices, a chapel andspaces where students can gather and discuss the issuesof the day. Why is this important? If Central Statestudents are to compete in the global marketplace theymust have the opportunity to learn using the most andvancededucational tools in state of the art facilities. We are preparing students for excellence. We are pleased with the progress made. Please knowthat providing a high-quality education is becoming anexpensive endeavor for both the University and students. The funding the University receives from theState of Ohio has decreased significantly in recentyears, causing us to increase educational costs for eachstudent. As educational costs increase, students andfamilies are asked to pay more for tuition, more forhousing and meals, and more for books.Exacerbating the problem is dwindling federal supportand student loans have become increasingly difficult toobtain, and if obtained quite expensive. Together wemust do more. Each of you has received a personal letter from methanking you for your previous gifts to the University.I invite you to peruse this document and learn of themany ways our alumni and friends have helped thisUniversity and our students. This report includes alisting of alumni contributors, friends, andnon-individual supporters of the University. Please know your gifts to Central State Universityhave provided critical financial supportfor scholarships, funded programs to ensure futureurban teachers for school districts throughout the Midwest, established a state of the art Stock TradingRoom, ensured that the Chorus remains number one inthe nation, increased the number of Ph.D.s on the facultyas well as provided opportunities for six studentsto attend law school. Again, we are pleased, but togetherwe must do more!I thank you for your past support of CentralState University. I enjoy seeing your name inone or more of the giving categories detailedin this document. Finally, I look forward toseeing you at Homecoming or one of themany exciting activities Institutional Advancementhas planned for this year.We must do MORE!3“Change isCentral”

The “Dream Keepers” Scholarship FundCentral State University’s scholarship budget isstrained to the utmost. As the University seeks to increaseits enrollment, it must also increase its scholarshipofferings. In recent years many of our studentshave “dropped out” for financial reasons. Ninety-sevenpercent (97%) of all students require funding to“bridge-the-gap” between financial aid, family contributionand school expenses. Central State Universitysimply does not have the scholarship dollars to accommodatethem. The annual “Dream Keepers” Scholarship Fund campaignis designed to address this need by providing“bridge-the-gap” scholarships to students. The averagescholarship amount for each student is $1,500. Theselimited scholarships enable our students to achievetheir full intellectual, economic and social potential. For winter semester 2012, we raised scholarship fundsto keep 73 students enrolled in the University. We areindeed very pleased. During the year, the Foundationawarded a total of $473,000 in scholarship aid to students. The research, teaching, and mentoring that goes on atCentral State University is second to none, and the educationwe offer is coveted by many.
