KEY POINT <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> <strong>Extension</strong>’s mission is todeliver knowledge that helps adults transform theirlives and careers.New ProgramsTeaching English as a Foreign Language(TEFL) ProgramOffered during winter and spring quarters(January-June), the super-intensive TEFLprogram helps participants develop knowledgeand practical skills to teach English as a foreignlanguage to students whose primary language isnot English in countries outside of the U.S. Thisprogram combines practical classroom trainingand U.S. cultural study with experiential Englishlanguage learning and teaching. It is designedespecially for people who are studying to be orare already EFL teachers in their own countriesand are interested in obtaining practical trainingin the U.S.These classes build proficiency in the four criticalskills (reading, writing, listening and speaking),grammar and pronunciation.† Participantshave daily access to our Multimedia ResourceCenter, a resource library and observation anddiscussion of ESL classes in a wide range ofstudent communities. She holds a master’sdegree in German from MiddleburyCollege (in conjunctionwith Gutenberg Universität inMainz, Germany) and a graduatecertificate in TESOL from <strong>UC</strong><strong>Davis</strong>. Steinbach has publishedfour videos on English languagetraining and participated in USAIDprojects in Latvia and Egypt. Hercurrent interests include technology-enhancedlanguage learning(CALL), teacher training,public speaking, filmmaking andintercultural training. She is aninstructor as well as the MultimediaResource Center director andcurriculum coordinator.

Onlinecourses when and where you want.Options for Further StudyStudents reaching advanced levels of proficiency may also continuetheir academic studies in a number of ways. You may apply to communitycolleges and universities (our advisors can help you withthis, see page 7). You may also enroll in <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> <strong>Extension</strong>’s BridgeProgram for up to a year of academic study at <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> (see page10). You may even want to take <strong>Extension</strong> courses offered on the <strong>UC</strong><strong>Davis</strong> campus with other international students or our professionalcertificate courses in Sacramento in the evenings with Californians.Academic OversightInternational participants receive support, advising and academicoversight from the International Programs office to ensure theymaintain their full-time student status. Students taking eveningcourses must be independent and ready to be part of an externalcommunity through their own efforts. Their classmates have jobs,families and other commitments. Most classes are held at <strong>Extension</strong>’sSutter Square Galleria in downtown Sacramento.Evening Certificate Programs—Academic Year<strong>UC</strong> <strong>Davis</strong> <strong>Extension</strong> offers several outstanding certificates of interestto international students. Primarily directed to alocal U.S. audience on a part-time evening basis,these courses provide rigorous post-graduatecourse work for working professionals who wishto advance their careers or develop new areas ofexpertise. With careful course planning, thesecertificates can be completed in nine months(late September-early June). Some certificatesoffer summer courses as well.
