The old Christian Hospital, still standing at 106Jefferson Street, opened in March 1906, with sevenbeds. Maintained by the Christian Church, PorterCounty's only hospital, could accommodate a maximumof 25 patients.A new unit was built on LaPorte Avenue in December1939.' Today Porter Memorial Hospital is a 340bed, County owned General Hospital. Dodge'S Telegraph andRailway InstituteDodge Telegraph and Railway Institute was establishedin 1874 as a department of the Northern IndianaNormal School.
