From Legion 6
The Legion continues to perform superbly throughout southern
Afghanistan as we Soldier through the sweltering months of
summer. Ares Company continues to protect the busiest airfield in
the world down in Kandahar. They are quickly becoming famous
for their successful operations and have detained more high level
targets than any other unit in the Brigade. The Barbarians are pushing
their operations into new areas in Shah Joy, locations which
have not seen a sustained security presence in years. The
C-Nation has proven their versatility in conducting operations
throughout the province with Afghan Security Forces, Route
Clearance, the Corps of Engineers, and the Agriculture
Development Team. Havoc Company has relocated to FOB
Lagman and assumed the duties there as FOB Mayor and support.
Recon has become the Zabul Quick Reaction Force and the Mortar Platoon has become EOD Escort.
Additionally we have fielded new Stryker vehicles, with improved armor protection to keep our Legionnaires safe.
Just as we are getting settled in to our mission here in Zabul, big changes are in the works. The Arctic Wolf
Brigade has moved down to Kandahar to take over responsibility for that province. A new brigade, the 116 th
Virginia National Guard is inbound and will be our new headquarters. Additionally, we will be making some
moves with units to new locations and rotating new leaders into position. MAJ Mike Manner and his wife Sharla
have departed the Legion and will be moving to Brigade. Mike and Sharla have been an invaluable part of the
Legion for two years and will be sorely missed. In their place, we would like to welcome MAJ Stephen Lockton
and his wife Jessica. They are an experienced team who will continue to carry the Legion tradition forward.
You can be very proud of your Legionnaires and all they have accomplished here so far. Despite austere
conditions and a complex mission, they each give their all every day. We could not do it without the love and
support of our Legion families. Thank you so much for all you do, and for putting up with our extended absence.
Please continue to support the company Family Readiness Groups, and let those volunteers know how much you
appreciate their time and support.
Headquarters & Headquarters Company
Havoc
Hello Families and Friends, from Forward
Operating Base Apache and Lagman! The Soldiers of
Havoc Company are continuing to do great things!
Our third month complete Havoc Soldier are pressing
on in this deployment to strive for excellence and
success. The staff increase their proficiency by the hour
to better direct the fight and support the maneuver
units. Each day the our TAC, MTRs, and RCN platoons
are out on the road disrupting enemy operations, and
keeping fellow US and NATO forces safe. As the
weather increase and the hours of operations do the
same our maintenance section, CRT, have been putting
in long hours ensuring not only Havoc but Charlie
company‘s vehicles are operating at 100% max capacity.
The Havoc HQ section has the awesome responsibility
of FOB Lagman Mayor Cell and BDOC; ensuring that
not only the 1-24 IN Soldiers are taken care of, but the
roughly 1500 other personnel here are safe and
maintain a certain quality of life. I would like to
welcome LT Jake Austin as our new MTR Platoon
Leader. He comes to Havoc from Alpha Company, he
takes the place of LT Sabatino. LT Sabatino was
selected to move to Charlie Company and lead 3 rd
platoon; we will miss Nick as he has been with Havoc
company for over a year and has led the MTR platoon
with great distinction. Additionally we welcome 2 nd
platoon Alpha Battery, 2/8 FA BN as they have been
sent to us to help enhance our BDOC operations,
welcome LT Cox and SFC Singleton and platoon.
The beginning of this month saw a few very
important promotions; Brandon Davis, David Darling,
and Greg Benjamin were promoted to the rank of
Captain. This is a huge promotion for these gentleman
as the days of being ―just an LT‖ are now over! I have
no doubt that they will continue to succeed in their
positions. In addition to the newly promoted Captains
two very deserving Staff Sergeants were promoted to
the rank of Sergeant First Class Jamal Gardley of the
TAC Platoon and Gedney Riley of battalion S9 shop.
Congrats to all the above mentioned; job well done, you
deserve it! Also, this month it was Kenneth Alexis of
the S6 commo shop that was awarded an Army
Achievement Medal for being selected the BN Soldier
Of The Month. SPC Alexis was selected due to his
outstanding professionalism, military knowledge and
P a ge 2
military bearing. Soldiers like SPC Alexis set good
standards and represent Havoc Company with great
honor.
I want to say, Thank you to all the Families and
Friends who continue to show support for our Soldiers.
I can honestly say, it is your support that drives us to
due the best and be the best that we possibly can. A
special thanks to the FRG for all your fundraising and
craft making. Congrats to Mrs. Hart for winning the
BBQ cook off at the Battle of the Bands and
representing the FRG and Havocettes.
Our Facebook page is gaining some popularity. It
Greetings from KAF,
Alpha Company - Ares
P a ge 4
Wow! What a month! I hope everyone back in Alaska had a wonderful and relaxing 4 th of July weekend.
We were able to take a few minutes on the 4 th to relax, but it wasn‘t the same as going to Pioneer Park or a day on
the Chena River. I‘m sure most of Soldiers including myself spent the day thinking of all our loved ones at home.
I won‘t be in command next year on the 4 th of July, but I can only hope we could all get together and enjoy the 4 th
together.
The big news for this month is without a doubt our new relationship we‘ve developed with the Soldiers
and Leaders of the Brigade Support Medical Company (BSMC). Through our partnership, we‘ve developed a
Female Engagement Team (FET) capability that has proven to be very effective in our Area of Operation (AO).
The BSMC has attached a group of female medics, healthcare providers, and other medical specialists to our
company to support us in a variety of missions. We‘ve conducted everything from water testing, dental outreach
training, and female outreach training with their support. By employing them within our patrols, we have been able
to engage a whole population of female Afghans that until this point were mainly left untouched. It‘s my hope that
by building on this training and by using their technical expertise We can further accelerate the quality of life for
the people in our AO, and hopefully set the conditions for transition within the next couple of years. CPT Jessica
Milloy and her Soldiers have made a tremendous impact over the last month working with us, and we are both
lucky and proud to have them on board.
Lastly, last month I gave everyone some hints about what to send to us.
This month, I‘d like to add some things to the list. The two main focus
groups for the Company continue to be the women and children. If possible
over the next month or so, while you‘re conducting spring/summer
cleaning. Please keep your eyes open for clothing, school supplies, and
any excess fabric you might have lying around your home. Believe me,
anything you send will find its way to either a needy child or mother.
Thank You.
Till Next Month, ARES 6

To Our Extended Barbarian Family:
This summer seems to be flying by, at least on our
end! The men are already cycling home for leave, but
it seems as if we just arrived. Despite the numerous
challenges in our area of operation, the soldiers of
Barbarian Company remain dedicated to the people
of Afghanistan and each other.
The area the men are working in has recently had a
significant shift in sentiment towards both the
Afghanistan National Security Forces (ANSF) and
the Barbarians. 2 nd platoon has built a strong
relationship with a village near the FOB, 3 rd platoon
has built a strong relationship with the Afghanistan
National Army (ANA), 4 th platoon continues to
provide security and has significantly reduced the
indirect fire threat to our company and the civilian
populace, and 1 st platoon continues to make
enormous strides towards influencing the local
populace in their decentralized location of
Deh Chopan.
The soldiers and leaders of Barbarian Company
continue to impress me daily through their relentless
pursuit of the enemy and their compassion towards
the local populace. Smart platoon leaders, disciplined
NCOs, and young soldiers working hard have made a
difference in the lives of the people here.
As always, we thank all of you for your incredible
support, and understand the challenge you face back
home is greater than ours—we could not accomplish
our mission here without you.
CPT Brian Harber
Greetings and salutations from Harber‘s Rangers. Over
the past month, the platoon has done some really great
things that have affected the people of Deh Chopan
District and ANSF. Members of the platoon have
started to return home for some well deserved rest and
relaxation (R&R).
During our down time (the little we have) we have built
a welcome sign to the COP (combat out post) and
placed it on our LZ (landing zone). The LZ is the only
way in or out of the COP, so everyone who visits will
see it. The sign was traced by SGT Vincent and then
colored in by our mortars, which need to re-attend
kindergarten to learn proper techniques on coloring
within the lines.
A well deserved promotion happened this month; our
Platoon Leader, Charles Timm, was promoted to
Captain.
Greetings from 2nd Platoon!
We have continued to grow and overcome
the many challenges faced in early June and have
been busy over the last several weeks. The Platoon
was given the opportunity to conduct an extended
mission for a week with the Afghan National
Security Forces (ANSF) in a local village outside the
FOB. The Platoon was fully immersed in the local
populace; living amongst the people in an attempt
to demonstrate our commitment to the security of
the villages in our Area of Operations (AO). Over
the course of our stay the men had the opportunity
to talk and play sports with the children, train with
both the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan
National Police (ANP), and provide Humanitarian
Assistance to the villagers. The men have
witnessed a subtle change in the perception of the
local nationals in the area.
Soldiers enjoyed playing soccer and volleyball
Additionally, the Platoon made the trip
south to Kandahar Air Field to receive our new
Strykers. The new vehicles provide additional armor
and are designed to improve survivability from
IEDs. It is also a welcome change to have operational
air conditioning inside the trucks as the temperature
has climbed into the 100s. The trip also
HELLHOUNDS TRAIN AFGHAN
NATIONAL SECURITY FORCES
Before American presence in this part of Afghanistan,
the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police,
or Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF), had a
problem with the Taliban. ANSF lacked the training to
be able to keep the Taliban at bay from their countless
attacks against their forces and the people of Afghanistan.
But the time has come for ANSF to be trained by
the best trained Army in the world.
Since deploying to Afghanistan, 3 rd PLT, B Co, 1-24 IN,
has partnered with ANSF, but the training is a new aspect
of the partnership. Training ANSF has been a challenge
that 3 rd PLT has accepted in order to bring them
up to standard in our tactics and to give them an understanding
of why we fight the way that we fight. The
Hellhounds know what it is needed for ANSF to defend
themselves and their country. Over the past month, 3 rd
PLT has taught ANSF many things, such as Basic Rifle
Marksmanship (BRM), Platoon and Squad Movement
Techniques, and Combat Lifesaver Skills (CLS). Sometimes,
the ANSF and Hellhounds have had friendly
competitions during training that many men - Afghan
and American- enjoyed. ANSF motivation and work
ethic has made for disciplined partners in arms.
SFC Mark Grover, second from right, gives guidance to ANP
during a mission.
HELLHOUNDS GET NEW STRYKERS AT
KANDAHAR AIR FIELD
Recently, 3 rd Platoon traveled to Kandahar Airfield
(KAF) to receive new Strykers with increased
protection. These new Strykers are equipped with a
double V-shaped armored hull on the bottom that is
designed to deflect blast pressure away from the crew
compartment while adding a second layer of armor.
These new Strykers, or Double V-Hulls (DVHs), were
designed and fielded by General Dynamics in less than
a year in order to meet the unique challenges of
operating in Afghanistan's rugged terrain.
During downtime at KAF, the platoon enjoyed
shopping on the Boardwalk, as well as eating at the
many excellent dining facilities available. It was a
welcomed change of pace. The trip also gave the
platoon a much needed chance to restock on many
supplies at the PX. Overall the trip to KAF was
productive, but it was good to get back to FOB
Bullard to continue its mission.
SGT Cayce Watson, left, leads his Squad during a patrol in the
midst of a dust storm.

4th Platoon Month Two: Electric Boogaloo
The sequel to our first month in Afghanistan was loaded
with action, excitement and break dancing. You think I’m
joking, and I am - there was no action.
We, the mounted Barbarians, have continued our
armed tourism of Shah Joy and its surrounding villages
over the course of the past few weeks and enjoyed
ourselves immensely. One reason is our mode of
transportation; driving has increased now that SGTs
Rutkowski and Walton have their MGSs up and
running. (Praise the god of Armor…) And with new
Strykers on their way, it‘s only a matter of time before
your soldiers make the transition
back to the loveable, rolling tankers
that they should have been in the
first place. Correction: Hardcore,
armored badasses that they should
have been in the first place. (A steady diet of chicken
nuggets and canned vegetables will ensure that the guys
all stay lean and mean)
‗Tanker‘ cannot be used as a blanket statement either
since we‘ve got SSG Jarvis and SGT Wright holding
down the Infantry side. And who can forget the newly
promoted Weapons Squad Leader? That‘s right folks, it‘s
SSG Fagan now. Those capable NCOs and their soldiers
have been making the magic happen on the ground
every day. Besides magic of the walking variety, 4th
platoon‘s tents are the most well-protected on the FOB.
Our soldiers worked hard every day
between missions to make sure that
the Outlaw‘s tents are the closest
thing to a bunker that you can get.
Thought I forgot about the break
dancing comment right? Ever since
SFC Sink started doing his little ‗happy‘ dances, privates
have been tearing up their tents with some of the hottest
dance moves you‘ve never seen in
da clubz…
Amen.
-The Outlaws of Shah Joy
HEADQUARTERS PLATOON
We have had quite the exciting month here in HQ
PLT! Your soldiers have accomplished a lot, but still
have a lot left to do. Several soldiers convoyed down
to KAF to upgrade our Strykers. Others stayed here at
FOB Bullard to man the TOC and Towers.
The Mortars and Forward Observers are finally
starting to get some real work in. We have begun
shooting our Mortars on a regular basis to make them
more accurate – and to scare the enemy! The Mortar
House is finally complete! All the mortarmen have
now moved and are turning it into a place of their
own.
1SG Hansen and SSG McBean
are working hard, alongside the
Romanian carpenters, to build
your soldiers a new MWR.
Unfortunately, we don‘t have a
surplus of power tools, so, as 1SG
Hansen says, ―WWJD – What
Would Jesus Do?‖
We are proud to
announce the newest arrival to the Barbarian Family!
SSG McBean and his wife Christina gave birth to their
third child, a baby girl, Rogue Scout, on June 22.
Personnel-wise, HQ is happy to announce the arrivals
of SPC Angerstein, who is now a CoIST Analyst, and
SSG Teets, who, after an extended stay as the liaison
to battalion, is now our Fire Support Team Chief.
Unfortunately, PFC Andersen and his Danish charm
have left us for 3 rd PLT.
As always, we would like to thank you all for your
constant love and support, and hope you are as proud
of your soldiers as we are! Please remember to keep
your entire Barbarian Family in your thoughts and
prayers. We hope you are all enjoy the rest of your
To the Centurion Company Family,
Charlie Company - Centurions
Hello to all. I hope the Alaska weather is treating you
better than I know the mid-summer Afghanistan heat is treating
us here. Temperatures right now range from the low 70‘s at night
to right around 100 degrees in the 2 o‘clock sun, making
afternoon excursions certainly draining. That being said, we are
all more than up to the task. Through a variety of settings from
flat, open desert-like plains and mesas to the orchards and
vineyards that line the local rivers, to mountain foothills that
border our area of operations to the north, the company
continues to do a phenomenal job conducting vehicle and foot
patrols in all conditions.
First off, we must make mention of the bittersweet fact
that LT Pat Harrigan has transitioned from 3 rd Platoon Leader to
a new job coordinating air operations on Battalion Staff as the S3
Air. Pat was a
phenomenal asset
to the company,
and the Soldiers of
third platoon were
undoubtedly better
prepared for combat
and better in
combat because of
his leadership. Pat,
you will be sorely
missed by the
nation, C-NATION!
Fortunately, we are lucky to receive veteran platoon
leader LT Nicholas Sabatino from the Battalion Mortar Platoon
as his replacement. Nick brings a wealth of smarts and
experience to ease the transition in the complex environment
where third platoon conducts operations. Furthermore, he has
the soldiers of third platoon, all of whom have run the gamut of
missions from COIN-centric projects to combat operations, to
assist him. Speaking of COIN, I‘d be remiss if I didn‘t
congratulate third and make mention of the recently completed
Mizan dam, a project to help the livelihood of local residents by
improving their agricultural efficiency. Job well done Centurions!
Meanwhile, down in and around Qalat City, the
remainder of the Company continues to patrol a vast expanse of
Zabul Province, often executing very short notice missions
dealing with a broad range of tasks. Luckily, this not only ensures
we‘re always ready for the next big thing, but it keeps us busy and
helps pass our time away from home more quickly. From
boarding helicopters en route to secure other units in need of
assistance to driving miles and miles away to Kandahar to get
brand new, safer Strykers, Centurion Company has plenty to do
and the absolute best Soldiers to do it with.
P a ge 10
Before closing, numerous Soldiers have reached significant
milestones worth mentioning. We‘d like to congratulate recently
promoted CPL Chris Stewart and wife Elizabeth on welcoming a
new baby girl, Lillian, into the world on the 15 th of JULY. We
welcome SSG Justin Jacoby and wife Crystal as well as SSG Ubaldo
Valenzuela and wife Crystal to the company. They arrived mid-July
and we are lucky to have these additional leaders at such a critical
time. We have also promoted many deserving Soldiers recently.
LT Joseph Lapointe is now CPT Lapointe. Lastly, SGT‘s Dietsen
Alexander and Josh Russell have been promoted to Staff Sergeant.
As always, thank you for your continued support. Before
closing, bear in mind that although LT Harrigan has moved to
HHC, we are extremely lucky to continue to have his wife Rocky
lead the FRG, even in his absence. Please thank her if you get the
chance. She does more for the Company than most realize.
