In applications with abrasiveparticles or heavy mixing, a “footless” magnetic drivewith a larger diameter shaft may be provided.5. Cooling CoilAn internal cooling coil can be installed in all reactors(except the Micro sizes) to remove the heat of a reactionand/or to cool the vessel at the end of a run. In somereactors a cooling coil is furnished as a standard fitting.In others, a coil can be added as an option in eitherserpentine style or alternately in a spiral style for selectedmodels. For the micro sizes, with their limited dimensions,a cold finger may be added as an option6. Gage and Rupture Disc RangesThe pressure gage range must be selected to providethe resolution desired, while having a range highenough to handle the maximum pressure the reactor willundergo. One would be tempted to simply get a gagewith the largest range possible, but this can reduce theresolution to unacceptable levels. One good rule of thumbfor good resolution is to operate with the gage at half ofits maximum range.The rupture disc is most commonly matched to theMaximum Allowable Working Pressure of the vessel,ensuring the disc will burst before reaching a pressurebeyond the MAWP range. Care must be taken not totake the vessel above 90% of its burst pressure undernormal operation. This will help protect the disc from theeffects of repeated pressure cycles.7. Controller OptionsParr controllers are typically set up to control temperature,but may also be set up with digital pressuredisplays, stirring speed, secondary temperature, andother displays and controls.These may be set up with data logging via PC aswell. For more information on these options, see the“Controller Section” of this catalog.8. CertificationASME, CE, CHINA, and Parr Certifications are availablefor users who require these recognized quality assurancecertifications.9. Vesselstyles are offered in a moveablehead or fixed head design.These reactors are availablewith an FKM O-ring seal foroperating temperatures to225 °C, and FFKM O-ring fortemperatures to 275 °C, or witha flat, PTFE gasket for operatingtemperatures up to 350 °Cmaximum.In the moveable head design,the vessel is held in a supportsystem which minimizes thephysical effort required tohandle these heavy components.The hoist is attached to asupport column which providesa convenient means for liftingthe head and cylinder out of thestand. These components maybe transferred to the holdingposition on the right side of thestand. The 4590 systems are nowavailable in high pressure (5000 psi) or high pressure/hightemperature (500 °C) versions.These micro reactors have been designed toprovide as many of the features of the larger vesselsas possible in the limited space available. Allof the standard head fittings are provided, withoptional cooling now available with aluminumblock heaters with cooling capability, weldedjackets or Cold Fingers.These systems are offered in both fixed headand moveable head vessel styles with choicesof a self sealing O-ring for temperatures up to225 °C or with FFKM O-ring for temperatures to275 °C or with a flat PTFE gasket for temperaturesto 350 °C, or with a Flexible Graphite gasket fortemperatures to 500 °C with the HP/HT option(for fixed head versions only). A split ring closureis standard.The 25 and 50 mL micro reactors use bandheaters which clamp directly onto the cylinderwhich has a limited surface area available forheat transfer. The 100 mL micro reactors usemantle heaters.These micro reactors can be easily convertedfrom one size to another by simply substitutinga larger or smaller cylinder, the correspondinginternal fittings, and heater. A face seal-type O-ring designis used with the proven and popular Parr splitring closure. For this application a special gasketgroove was designed to retain the O-ring onthe head of the reactor when it is opened. A fullrange of O-ring materials is available for chemicalcompatibility with reactants, products andsolvents.Positive Agitation by HighTorque Magnetic DrivesThese reactors are equippedwith Parr magnetic drives toprovide a trouble free internalstirrer. These drives have beendesigned and tested to routinelydeliver 2000 hours of operationwithout service.Internal StirrersThe standard internal stirrer for these vesselsis a turbine type impeller. S t i r r e d R e a c t o r s 2Split Ring for Glass Reactors.Materials of ConstructionThese reactors are a combination of a glassreaction vessel with a metal head, internalstirrer, dip tube, thermowell, cooling loop, andexternal valves and fittings, or alternately an allmetal system.The standard material of construction forthe head is Type 316 Stainless Steel with PTFEcoated T316SS internals. As an alternative thehead and internal wetted parts can be providedin any of the standard Parr materials of construction.See the 5100 Ordering Guide.SizeSeries 5100 Reactors can be easily convertedbetween the 160, 300, 450, and 600 mL sizesby simply changing the cylinders and internalparts. In a similar manner, 1 L and 1.5 L are interchangeable.While the 160-600 mL stand cannotbe converted to hold 1 and 1.5 L vessels, thelarger stand can be converted to accommodatethe 160-600 mL vessels. If you plan to convertat a later time, be sure to order the stand for thelargest size you plan to use so the shield andsupports will not have to be replaced.Heating and Temperature ControlThese reactors are available with eitherjacketed or non-jacketed glass cylinders allowingfor heating by either a user supplied circulatoror with a removable heating mantle respectively.While we would normally expect glass vessels tobe equipped with circulating jackets to maintaintheir transparent feature, some users may notneed to heat their reactions or may prefer to useremovable heating mantles when they need towork at elevated temperatures. Although transparencyis not an issue with metal vessels, userswill generally want to select the same heatingmethod for metal vessels as they use for glassvessels so they can utilize the same heating andcontrol system for both.Users who are using a circulating bath thathas its own temperature control for use withthese reactors will want to order the reactorwithout a heating mantle and may only need aSplit Ring for Metal Reactors.motor controller for stirring speed to completethe system. Most laboratory circulators shouldbe adequate for these small vessels. Setsdo not include heater.Glass UnderPressureIn the seventy years Parr has been offeringapparatus incorporating glass vessels andbottles to be used under pressure, we havelearned the following important lessons.1. Reactions at elevated pressures andtemperatures can be conducted safely onlyif the user takes into consideration all ofthe potential hazards that may occur if theglass vessel should break under pressure.2. Vessel design is important. Glassvessels must have rounded sections,proper annealing, cushioning supports,and provisions for dealing with differentialthermal expansion as well as adequatethicknesses, careful construction,inspection and testing. All of the glassvessels used in these reactors are testedto a minimum of 225 psi (15 bar).3. Careful maintenance is also critical tosafe operation of glass vessels. Scratcheson metal vessels which are highlyductile are cosmetic. Scratches on brittleglass vessels create enormous stressrisers which can completely destroy thestructural integrity of the vessel. Greatcare must be employed in handling andwashing these vessels to maintain thestrength designed into them and confirmedby their original hydrostatic testing.4. There are several differencesbetween these new reactors and their originalcounterparts. Primarily, these are:1. A smaller, more compact magnetic driveis installed.2. A smaller, more compact variable speedstirrer motor.3. The larger support stand, overarm andmotor have been eliminated.4. An aluminum Block Heater also serves asthe support stand.As a result of these changes, we are now ableto offer these new reactors to users who do notrequire the wide variety of options and expandabilityprovided by our Series 4500 Reactors ata significantly lower cost. These new designswill be welcomed by not only investigators withlimited space or budgets, but also by investigatorsbuilding multiple reactor installations forcombinatorial chemistry or high throughputinvestigations.The reaction vessels used in these new HPCLreactors are identical to the ones furnished in theSeries 4590 Micro and Series 4560 Mini Reactors.HPCL Reactors use the popular Parr split ringclosure. These vessels are rated for a maximumworking pressure of 3000 psi. The 300, 450, and 600 mL reactorsinclude an internal cooling loop in additionto these fittings.New Magnetic DriveTo take advantage of the new technologyavailable in magnets today, Parr has designed anew compact, magnetically-coupled stirrer driveespecially for these smaller vessels. Tests showthat this new drive is sufficient to stir reactionmixtures with viscosities up to 10,000 centipoisein a 600 mL reaction vessel.Variable Speed MotorA 1/17 hp variable speed motor provides stirringspeeds adjustable from 0 to 1400 rpm. Anoptional tachometer pickup provides a signal tothe optional tach ometer display module whichcan be installed in the 4848 Controller.Heater / Reactor SupportA heater also serves as the vessel support forthe HPCL Reactors. This is an aluminum blockstyle heater for excellent thermal uniformity. Thecartridge heaters used in this heating block areeasily replaced if required. A stainless steel heatshield is provided around the heating block. Thisstyle of heater/reactor support provides a verysmall footprint, ideal for limited bench space.Model 4848 Temperature ControllerThe Series 4848 Controller used with thestandard Parr line of medium and high pressurereactors is also furnished for use withthese reactors.
