What to do in Paris Sightseeing Paris is fairly compact and easy to get around, head off on foot to soak up the atmosphere of the city and take in the iconic landmarks or stop off at a pavement café. A cruise down the Seine is a great option as many of the city’s best sights are on the river including Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the Place de la Concorde and the Eiffel Tower. Other things to see in Paris include the Basilique du Sacre-Cœur and the Pompidou Centre. Stroll around the cobblestone streets of the Marais district with its mansions and museums. South of the river you can visit the Musée d'Orsay, the Rodin Museum and the Hotel des Invalides, the burial place of Napoleon. Don’t forget, Paris’s 14 national museums open free to the public every 1st Sunday of the month. Shopping Paris is a shopper’s paradise. Boutiques can be found on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré: Dior, Chanel, Givenchy, Jean-Paul Gaultier to name drop a few. Les Halles is a shopping mall with over 180 stores, great for bargain hunters. Don’t miss shopping complexes such as Champs Elysées, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps department stores. Head to specialty shops such as the bakery/patisserie/deli, they have pastries, cheeses and pâtés to die for. The open-air markets are also a fantastic place to find flowers, produce and clothing. There are three main flea markets which are situated around the old gates of the city. Eating & Drinking Paris is the home of ‘La Grande Cuisine’ and to Arc de Triomphe over 5,000 restaurants with the traditional French bistros being the best value for money. Cafés and dive bars are a stop on the way to or from work for most Parisians, here lunch can be taken at a reasonable price. Grab a newspaper, a glass of fine wine and soak up the atmosphere. Local delicacies include pastries, paté, cheese, wine and Coquilles Saint Jacques á la Parisienne (scallops). The area around the Louvre is home to some of the most upmarket bars in Paris, including the Ritz’s Hemingway Bar in Place Vendome, a piano bar frequented by the writer in the 1940s. Montmartre is the location of the infamous Moulin Rouge cabaret, which still presents glittering extravaganzas on a nightly basis. Bastille is a lively area full of bars and nightclubs. Getting Around Paris has an excellent public transport system, consisting of taxis, buses, an underground metro and express trains (RER). The metro and the RER are the easiest and most cost effective ways to get around. From May to Sept a passenger boat offers sightseeing trips on the Seine stopping at the main attractions, and from April to Sept a bus service loops around most of the major sights in Paris every Sunday and public holidays. A night bus service covers the city between 1am and 5.30am. Taxis are readily available and can be hailed or caught at taxi ranks. Bicycle rentals are also popular. You can pick up a bike at one of 1,450 stations and return it at any other (from €1 an hour). Hotel Le Littre Eiffel Tower Where to stay Central Paris is officially divided into 20 districts called arrondissements, numbered from 1 to 20 in a clockwise spiral from the centre of the city. Each of our hotels in this brochure details which arrondissement they are in. If you want to stay in the centre of Paris for the Louvre choose a hotel in the 1st district, the Notre Dame is in the 4th, the Eiffel Tower is in the 7th and the Champs Elysées is in the 8th.
