Munich
Frankfurt
A fascinating country offering a vibrant mix of history, culture and events,
with spectacular architecture, cosmopolitan cities and much more.
What to do in Germany
Sightseeing
Berlin: The events of the past have left their mark
on the cityscape of Berlin, with many symbolic
historical attractions like The Brandenburg Gate,
Checkpoint Charlie and the Reichstag. Berlin is a
city leaving behind its history of division and
focussing on its modern cultural identity. It has a
vibe all of its own, and wherever you go, you can
experience the pulsating life on the boulevards, in
the art galleries, at the flea markets, and in the
city’s 300 clubs and 7,000 bars and restaurants.
Munich: Munich is a city that manages to marry
old Bavarian tradition with vibrant modern life. The
Marienplatz is Munich’s main square and is
dominated by the Neo-Gothic Town Hall featuring
its famous Glockenspiel with its 43 bells
accompanied by moving clockwork figures. The
15th century Gothic Church of Our Lady is
Munich’s unmistakable landmark and close by is
probably the most famous tavern in the world, the
Hofbräuhaus beer hall.
Cologne: The cityscape of Cologne has been
shaped by 2,000 years of cultural history and a
combination of Roman, medieval and modern
influences. The famous landmark at the heart of
the city, Cologne Cathedral, can be seen from
miles away, and is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Frankfurt: Frankfurt has the tallest building in
Europe, the famous Zeil shopping street and an
internationally renowned trade fair centre. The
picturesque Römerberg square is lined with
historical timber-framed buildings.
Shopping
Berlin: The main shopping districts are the
Kurfürstendamm, Breitscheidplatz and for some
bargains, a quick stroll in the Budapestststrasse
and Tauenzienstrasse could prove worthwhile.
One of the trendiest shopping streets is the
Schönhauser Allee with many independent shops.
Munich: The two main shopping districts are
Neuhauserstrasse and Kaufingerstrasse in the city
centre where department stores and high-street
chains can be found. Alternatively the exclusive
avenue of Maximillianstrausse is the place to go
for designer goods.
Cologne: Several pedestrian streets, such as
Hohe Strasse and Schildergasse, offer interesting
shops selling clothes and perfume.
Frankfurt: Excellent shopping opportunities, and
home to the Zeil, Germany’s equivalent to New
York’s Fifth Avenue.
Eating & Drinking
Local delicacies include ‘sauerkraut’ shredded
cabbage, ‘wiener schnitzel’ breaded veal,
‘apfelstrudel’ apple strudel, and ‘weisswurst’ white
veal sausages. And of course a beer or schnapps
shouldn’t be missed.
Berlin: Brimming with a wide variety of
restaurants, Oranienburger Street in Berlin is the
place to dine; and the Hackescher Markt/Hof is
one of Berlin’s top entertainment hubs with plenty
of bars and cafes to choose from.
Munich: Famous for its breweries and lively beer
halls. Visit the world-famous Hofbrauhaus and
when the beer becomes too much, soak it up
with a delicious salty pretzel, potato soup or a
variety of delicious sausages.
Cologne: Offers its locally-brewed Kölsch beer
and other gastronomic specialties like ‘Halver
Hahn’ rye bread with cheese and mustard.
Berlin
Frankfurt: Most traditional German restaurants
are located in the Fressgasse pedestrian street,
and in the Sachsenhausen area. The best
restaurants serving modern and international
cuisine tend to be in the city centre or Westend.
Getting Around
The best way to travel around the country is by
train as the network is comprehensive, very
reliable and safe, and decent value for money.
Another good option is to rent a car and drive
between attractions on the Autobahn.
