What to do in Eastern Europe Sightseeing Prague: Head to the Castle District, otherwise known as Hradèany, to view castles such as St Vitus Cathedral and wander round the cobblestone streets of Old Town Square. Museum of Communism as well as the Jewish Museum is popular with culture lovers, and you will be captivated by the medieval Astronomical Clock. Krakow: The only major city to escape the destruction of World War II, Krakow has one of the best-preserved medieval city centres in Europe. With magnificent churches and aristocratic palaces lining the old streets and at the heart of the city lies one of the grandest squares in Europe, the Old Market Square. Budapest: Memento Park is one of the city’s strangest attractions, featuring giant statues which lined the city’s streets during the Communist era. Visit the Royal Palace, which dates back to the 13th Century, the Parliament Buildings along the banks of the Danube River and walk along the Chain Bridge, Budapest's first bridge over the Danube. Shopping Prague: The main shopping area in Prague extends from Wenceslas Square, past Na Prikope and into Republic Square. Mala Strana and the Old Town Square are home to small shops and art galleries. The Old Town Square also has a permanent market selling arts, crafts and souvenirs. Budapest: The main shopping areas are in the city centre and the lanes surrounding Pest’s Váci utca. Designer outlets can be found on Andrássy Avenue in Pest, while the Castle District and Gellért Hill are home to some great speciality, souvenir and craft shops. Eating & Drinking Prague: The most popular dining areas around the city are the Staré Mesto (Old Town), Nove Mesto (New Town) and Vinohrady. Beer (Czech Pilsner) is a huge part of Czech culture, and for this reason many gastro-pubs exist serving hearty roast meals. Street vendors sell local Czech-style hot dogs and mulled wine. Nightlife consists of cafés, pubs and bars, live music venues and clubs. Krakow: Countless cafés and outdoor restaurants surround the cobbled main square. The large student population creates a lively atmosphere and a vibrant nightlife. Budapest: The inner city and Central Pest are the main areas for dining out. Indulge in goulash, Hortobágyi palacsinta (stuffed pancakes), strudels and the iconic Dobos Cake, a five-layer sponge cake layered with butter cream and topped with thin caramel slices. Getting Around Prague: Prague has a cheap and efficient public transport system consisting of an integrated network of buses, trams, metro and a funicular on Petrin Hill. Budapest Wawel Castle, Krakow Krakow: Buses and trams are the easiest and cheapest way to get around, though they can be crowded during rush hour. The Old Town is relatively compact and easy to negotiate, and is best explored on foot as it is closed to traffic.
