100 miles south of mainland Britain and only 14 miles from the
coast of France, are the unique and fascinating Channel Islands.
What to do in Jersey & Guernsey
Sightseeing
The Channel Islands boast an array of scenery,
from lush valleys to beautiful unspoilt coastlines,
offering an abundance of outdoor activities. Take
part in some water sports on the many scenic
beaches or enjoy a round of golf, a bike ride or
a long walk in the countryside. Alternatively
discover the vast history and heritage in the
main towns of St Helier in Jersey and St Peter
Port in Guernsey.
Jersey: For an insight into Jersey’s history you
must visit the Jersey War Tunnels which tells the
story of the occupation of Jersey during World
War Two, and Mont Orgueil Castle which for
600 years protected Jersey against French
invasion. Also visit the Maritime Museum,
Jersey’s Living Legend Village, and Elizabeth
Castle which overlooks St Aubin’s Bay. Must
see attractions for families include the aMaizin!
Maze and Adventure Park and The Durrell
Wildlife Conservation Trust which is a sanctuary
to over 130 endangered species.
Jersey’s Battle of the Flowers Festival takes
place in August each year – well worth a visit
but book early to avoid disappointment.
Guernsey: The beaches of L’Eree and Port Soif
in Guernsey are considered two of the best in
Britain and offer fantastic water sports. The
Guernsey Museum and Art Gallery, the German
Occupation Museum and Castle Cornet are all
well worth a visit. Alternatively take a short boat
trip to one of the other Channel Islands,
Alderney, Herm and Sark which offer unspoilt
and tranquil beaches. There is a huge number
of seasonal festivals that take place in Guernsey.
The Harbour Carnival at St Peter Port takes
place annually in August, where street
performers, musicians and stalls fill the
quayside.
Shopping
The low rates of duty and exemption from VAT
makes many goods, particularly electronic
equipment, perfume and jewellery less
expensive than on the UK mainland. St Helier in
Jersey offers a mix of well-known High Street
stores and small local shops. The small
boutiques of Guernsey offer exclusive clothes,
shoes and leather goods, whilst the Old Quarter
is the place to find antiques. Don’t forget to pick
up a knitted ‘jersey’ sweater!
Eating & Drinking
With an abundance of natural ingredients from
the sea and land, the cuisine of the Channel
Islands has a glowing reputation all over the
world. Both Jersey and Guernsey offer a vast
choice of eating places including beachside
bistros, pavement cafes, Michelin-star
restaurants and country pubs. Most restaurants
use local produce including Jersey Royal
potatoes, quality seafood such as crab, oyster
and Jersey plaice, and dairy produce from the
Jersey cow. Guernsey’s St Peter Port has a
good choice of lively pubs and bars where you
can soak up the atmosphere…along with a few
cocktails or locally brewed ales.
Jersey
Jersey: With such a variety of scenery and
wealth of history you may be surprised that
Jersey measures just 9 miles by 5. The island
consists of a network of ‘green lanes’ where
walkers, horse-riders and cyclists have
precedence over cars.
Guernsey: Guernsey has an extensive bus
service with routes servicing most parts of the
island and all of the major attractions. Also with
low priced petrol and competitive rates, self-drive
hire cars are popular transport in Guernsey.
However please take care when driving in
Guernsey; the roads are narrow, there are special
rules including a max speed limit of 35mph, and
not all the signs will be familiar to you.
