What to do in Bruges & Brussels
Sightseeing
Bruges: Bruges’ medieval city centre was added
to the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Take your
time to walk through busy squares, refreshing
parks and quiet cobbled streets; take an intimate
cruise on the romantic canals or take in some
Flemish art. With chocolate boutiques, a
chocolate museum, chocolate trail and a
chocolate fair, it goes without saying that Bruges
is the world’s capital of chocolate.
Brussels: Brussels is packed tight with historic
buildings, monuments and museums. In fact,
there are nearly 75 great museums in Brussels
alternating between explaining Belgium's long
history, showcasing its art and architecture, and
just plain fun. There are several city landmarks that
shouldn’t be missed, including a visit to the Grand
Place, Hotel de Ville and Museum of Ancient Art
and the Museum of Modern Art, both housing
Brussels best art treasures.
Shopping
Bruges: Bruges is one of the most attractive
shopping cities in West Flanders, with a large
variety of shops within reach of everyone’s
budget. The main shopping streets are situated
between Markt Square and the old city gates,
here you will find the famous lace and chocolate
shops. The superb antique shops and jewellers
are also worth a visit.
Brussels: Head down to the Boulevard de
Waterloo area and Avenue Louise where all the
designer shops and boutiques can be found.
Expect to see names such as Louis Vuitton,
Gucci and Versace. The Rue Neuve is the main
pedestrian shopping street and shoppers can find
mostly international chain stores while more
original independent stores are located between
the Grand Place and the Rue Lemonnier.
Eating & Drinking
Bruges: Gastronomy has always reigned
supreme in Bruges. Today there are countless
restaurants, pavement cafes and teahouses in the
city. Indulge in fresh-from-the-sea mussels with
chips and mayonnaise washed down with a
speciality Belgian beer.
Brussels: Known for large portions which don't
skimp on quality, even cheap dining is held to a
high standard. Try the street side cafés where
Belgium waffles, chocolate, French fries and world
famous beer all make great snacks. Several fine
dining establishments can be found close to de
Broukére or the Grand Place.
Getting Around
Bruges: The best way to get around this
compact city is on foot. Or take a horse drawn
carriage ride around the beautiful cobbled streets,
a Bruges City Tour in a panoramic bus or canal
cruise.
Brussels: The modern and well-organised public
transport system of Brussels consists of the
metro, trams and buses. Trams provide an ideal
way to get around and are faster than buses,
especially when they travel underground in the city
centre to become the prémétro. Taxis are metered
and expensive.
