Promenade de Anglais in Nice is lined with palm
trees, street cafes, restaurants and boutiques
opposite the beautiful Mediterranean. Also explore
the narrow winding streets of Nice’s Vieille Ville
(old town) and see the spectacular art collections
in the Musée Matisse and the Musée des Beaux-
Arts Jules Chéret. Monte Carlo in the tiny
principality of Monaco oozes glamour and style
and is widely known for its casino and the
Formula One Monaco Grand Prix. As well as
having a flutter on the casino, you must visit the
Oceanographic Museum which contains a
spectacular aquarium, and The Palais du Prince
which is located in old Monaco-Ville.
Shopping
On the French Riviera, the main promenades in
Nice and Cannes offer designer boutiques to rival
those of Paris. However markets selling local
produce are also on offer. Visit the famous Cours
Saleya flower and food market in Nice or the
daily market at Marche Forville in Cannes.
The longest shopping street in France,
measuring just short of 1 mile, is the Rue
Sainte-Catherine in Bordeaux, a must for all
fashion lovers.
Those looking to take home some of their
favourite wine will find it is best to buy directly
from the wine farms, although Calais offers a
great location to bag some bargains in its
hypermarkets.
Eating & Drinking
The restaurants, bistros and cafés of France are
a gastronomic delight serving everything from
crêpes, cheese, wine and champagne. However
each region of France has its own very distinctive
cuisine, for example seafood restaurants are in
abundance on the French Riviera; try
bouillabaisse, fish soup and salad niçoise.
Café de Paris on Casino Square in Monte Carlo
is a good place to stop and sip a late night
aperitif along with a spot of people watching.
Lyon has a reputation as the ‘gastronomic capital
of the world’. Sample some of the finest cuisine
whilst taking a dinner cruise down the river.
The larger vineyards of France often offer tastings
and tours of the cellars and vineyards. The area
surrounding Bordeaux produces over 70 million
gallons of wine each year and is the wine capital
of the world. Visit Château Mouton-Rothschild,
which attracts thousands of visitors each year
who come as much for the impressive collection
of art as for the wine.
In Lille the best Belgian beers are on tap and
served up in most of the popular bars, to wash
down the delicious local cuisine, of rich stews,
seafood and cheeses such as Vieux-Lille.
Getting Around
Nice city centre is small enough to get around
on foot. Buses are the main form of public
transport and cover most of the city until
midnight. The Sunbus is a popular tourist service,
running daily to popular tourist destinations. Most
of the centre of Lille is pedestrianised and well
signposted, ideal for walking. The city has a
good public transport system, with two metro
lines, two tram lines and buses covering 60
different routes. Taxis are widely available from
the airport and Lille Europe train station, near the
main square. Renting a bike is also a good
option in summer. Lyon has a great transport
network with Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport’s TGV
high-speed train station, as well as the highly
developed TGV network and freeway system.
The urban transport network consists of over
100 bus lines, two funiculars, four metro lines
and two tramway lines.
