The study indicates Ihe necessity of maintaining the continuity of the lake berween bothsides of the barrage so that the tidal washings during the p msoon months enabks tonaturally llush out the wades and thefeby mkKing ttte 1ves5 on the environment at thisSector.The continuity would also ensure the upward and downwad migration of the lish andprawn any time during the year making the whok lake available to the euryhalinespecies. This would ~ubstantially improw the fishery of the lake as a whole. The upwardand downward migration of the Macrobrachiurn specter also would be facilitated lead~ngto the rejuvenation of its fishery. The changes w l d haw a salutary effect on the socioeconomiccondition 01 the lisherfolk engaged in fishery 01 the lake.It is tberelore suggested that there should be only periodic closure of barrage rather thanpermanently remained closed for about 4-5 months. The periodicity should depend onthe tidal amplitude so that the'second crop olpaddy cuhivation is not adversely affecteddue to the salinity intrusion, and the tidal amplitude does not reach the intake polnt ofdrinking water lor the Kottayam town in Meenachal river.
