Burt, who currently lives in arented <strong>home</strong>, said he had played the same five numbers for the past seven months. He said he originally got the se<strong>to</strong>f numbers when he bought a Quick Pick ticket and decided the five numbers would be winners one day. Burtwatched the <strong>Cash</strong> 5 drawing during WRAL’s 11 p.m. news on Sunday and thought he had matched four of the fivenumbers. This morning, he went back <strong>to</strong> the s<strong>to</strong>re where he bought the winning ticket, the Food Lion on BroadStreet in <strong>Fuquay</strong>-<strong>Varina</strong>, and discovered he had matched all five numbers <strong>to</strong> win the jackpot.“Like everybody else, I’ve always dreamed I would win something like this,” Burt said as he picked up his check atNCEL headquarters. “But you can’t win <strong>with</strong>out a ticket. Then there’s always the chance that you won’t win. I’m justlucky.” Burt received a check for $192,579 after taxes on his <strong>prize</strong> were <strong>with</strong>held.Daryl Adams of Flowery Branch, Ga., claimed a $200,000 <strong>prize</strong> from the Feb. 12 Powerball drawing on Mondayless than three weeks before it would have expired. Adams, an engineer who builds data centers, said he enjoysplaying the lottery, both number games like Powerball and instant scratch-off games. He said that while on abusiness trip <strong>to</strong> Raleigh he dined at his favorite restaurant, s<strong>to</strong>pped at Taylor’s on Six Forks Road <strong>to</strong> get some gas,and decided <strong>to</strong> <strong>buy</strong> Powerball tickets for the next four drawings.“My favorite game is whatever gives me the vibe when I come in the s<strong>to</strong>re,” Adams said. “I’ll look at a game and justget a good feeling.” Adams said he didn’t check his tickets until about three weeks later and discovered he hadmatched the five white balls in the drawing. He said he tucked the winning ticket safely away in a safe deposit boxuntil a break in his work allowed him <strong>to</strong> return <strong>to</strong> Raleigh <strong>to</strong> get his <strong>prize</strong>. Adams said North Carolina has become alucky state for him.“I’ve had better luck in North Carolina and Florida,” he said. “I typically don’t do that well in Georgia.” After taxes,Adams received a check for $136,000. He said he plans <strong>to</strong> save the <strong>prize</strong> money and invest it.Winning Powerball tickets expire 180 days after a drawing and Adams’ winning ticket was scheduled <strong>to</strong> expire onAug. 11.
