Making Better Decisions:A User’s Guide to Your MindYou make business and personal decisionsevery day that are supposed to get youwhat you want: success at work andhappiness at home. And you are not stupid.You’re smart, educated, and <strong>of</strong>ten thinkhard before you decide. So why is it that,so <strong>of</strong>ten, things don’t turn out as you’veplanned? Why is it that negotiations breakdown among parties who both want tomake a deal? Why is it that we fail to seeour own role in relationships that aren’tworking? While it’s true that sometimes<strong>the</strong> world takes an unpredictable turn,more <strong>of</strong>ten than not <strong>the</strong> way that we thinkand make decisions plays a major role indetermining <strong>the</strong> outcomes we experienceat work and at home.This master class will give you insight into<strong>the</strong> way your mind works so that you canguard against predictable difficulties itcreates for you, as well as harness <strong>the</strong> rawpower <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> unconscious when you dealwith o<strong>the</strong>rs. Through self-knowledge andinsight you will gain a greater understanding<strong>of</strong> why your business and home lives arewhere <strong>the</strong>y are, and how to steer <strong>the</strong>mtowards success in <strong>the</strong> future.Dr Michael Zyphur is a Senior Lecturerin Human Resource Management in <strong>the</strong><strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Business</strong> and Economics.He received his PhD in industrial andorganisational psychology from TulaneUniversity and held academic positionsat <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Washington and <strong>the</strong>National University <strong>of</strong> Singapore beforejoining <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong> in 2009. His researchinterests lie in <strong>the</strong> domain <strong>of</strong> probabilisticand statistical modeling, decision making,and <strong>the</strong> biological basis <strong>of</strong> behaviour inorganisations.To Outsource or Not toOutsource?Outsourcing <strong>of</strong> business processes andfunctions is a controversial issue. Inrecent times, <strong>the</strong>re has been a dramaticincrease in organisations engaging in thisphenomenon. Traditionally associatedwith low value production activities, manyorganisations are now outsourcing highvalue service oriented activities as well.It has now become an economy widephenomenon, and it would appear thatno one is immune to its ubiquity.In this master class, Dr Singh will userecent research findings and examplesto assess <strong>the</strong> justification for outsourcing,its effectiveness, and its impact onorganisations and individuals. Discussionsto follow <strong>the</strong> presentation will helpparticipants develop a better understanding<strong>of</strong> why organisations outsource, as wellas <strong>the</strong> challenges and risks that <strong>the</strong>y faceand how to best deal with <strong>the</strong>m. Theimplications for individuals affected byoutsourcing will also be discussed.Dr Prakash Singh is an AssociatePr<strong>of</strong>essor in Operations Management in<strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Business</strong> and Economics.He received his PhD from The University<strong>of</strong> Melbourne and has held academicpositions at QUT and <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>South Pacific prior to joining <strong>the</strong> <strong>Faculty</strong>.Dr Singh’s research interests are in <strong>the</strong>operations management field, with a focuson topics within supply chain management,quality management, operations strategyand innovation management areas. Hehas been recognised for his excellence in<strong>the</strong>se areas in both teaching and research.Emerging Frameworks inCorporate ResponsibilityThe latest trend in corporate responsibilityis <strong>the</strong> emergence <strong>of</strong> a suite <strong>of</strong> voluntaryframeworks and standards able to guidecompanies in how to respond to <strong>the</strong>ir socialand sustainability challenges. They alsocarry with <strong>the</strong>m, however, <strong>the</strong> potentialfor future legal and regulatory changesthat could significantly alter <strong>the</strong> corporateresponsibility landscape.To continue our responsibility to share <strong>the</strong>latest knowledge with our community,<strong>the</strong> Graduate School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Business</strong>and Economics is pleased to presentAustralia’s foremost experts on two <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> predominant frameworks: <strong>the</strong> OECDGuidelines for Multinational Enterprisesand <strong>the</strong> United Nations (Ruggie) ‘Protect,Respect and Remedy’ Framework on<strong>Business</strong> and Human Rights.Serena Lillywhite is Oxfam Australia’sMining Advocacy Coordinator. Her areas <strong>of</strong>expertise include corporate responsibilitywith a primary focus on mining, humanrights, labour rights and internationalaccountability mechanisms. She isAustralia’s leading expert on <strong>the</strong> OECDGuidelines for Multinational Enterprises,and was directly involved in <strong>the</strong> latest2011 update <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Guidelines. Serenais a graduate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Graduate School <strong>of</strong><strong>Business</strong> and Economics.Dr Alex Guaqueta is a lecturer at <strong>the</strong>School <strong>of</strong> International Studies at FlindersUniversity. She has expertise on business,armed conflict and human rights.
