While transport to and from other locations may have beenallowed in the past, this situation has become unmanageable and unsafe. The rulesgoverning School Buses are clear in this regard.Transport such as:• to the home of another student,• to after school employment,• to sporting and other social events, or• to another person’s home for the purpose of child mindingare all regarded as private in nature and therefore the responsibility of the parentsand students concerned.Casual travel in the past has caused overcrowding on some buses which createsserious concerns with respect to the safety. This year most buses are alreadyrunning to their capacity so seating is not available. As a result of these issues, and in accord with Department of Education andTraining and Department of Infrastructure guidelines, no bus passes will be issuedfor any reason other than to facilitate short term emergency housing.PLEASE NOTE: No bus pass will be issued for any other purpose. We deeply regret the inconvenience this may cause but we need to followthe guidelines set out by the Department of Education and Early ChildhoodDevelopment closely as possible, which are created in the best interests of safetyfor all students.INSTRUMENTALMUSIC AT DSCThis year over 100 students have taken upthe opportunity to learn a musical instrumentat Drouin Secondary College. Why do homework?Homework can cause stress for children and their parents particularlyif left to the last minute. Start the school year with a routine everyonecan follow. For parents, it’s important to understand the benefits. Ifyou’re not convinced homework matters, it will be even harder toconvince your children. While there are arguments against large volumes of homework, thereare good reasons for a moderate amount:• Homework reinforces learning taught during the day. Somelearning won’t stick so well, unless students give it more practiceand the classroom environment isn’t necessarily going to provideadequate time.• Homework instils self-discipline. It teaches time management, organisational skills, and self-responsibility. Self-discipline is akey life skill that can only be learnt in the doing.Homework will rarely be appealing. Be a facilitator rather than aforce to be reckoned with. You can cajole, plead, threaten or bribe, but it’s unlikely to make children more enthusiastic.Provide a comfortable, well-lit place for your child to do homework, and ensure they have everything needed, from pens and paper, to alaptop and books.Get special project materials in advance to avoid the excuse of “Idon’t have what I need.”Take a moment to sit with them when they start homework to see whatelse they might need.Encourage your child to keep you informed about progress andinteresting facts.Lukas Willig:Achievement atthe Highest LevelAt Drouin Secondary College theoverarching focus is on LearningGrowth. PROGRESS REPORTS NOWDELIVERED 6 TIMES A YEARYour child will receive 6 Progress Reports and 2 EndSemester Reports a year at Drouin Secondary CollegeProgress Reports are written at Mid Term 1,2,3 and 4and at the End of Term 1 and 3.End of Term 1 and 3 Progress Reports will be followedup with a Parent/Student/Teacher Interview.Progress Reports feature a Progress Score. The ProgressScore was introduced in 2011 and has been modifiedslightly in 2013.What is a Progress Score? The motto of Drouin Secondary College is Finem Respice- Lookto the End. The Progress Score will help you do this. Your child’seffort, behaviour, organisation, task completion and academicachievement is tracked through Progress Reports. For each subjectthe scores are tallied and averaged. We then calculate theProgress Score. Each area of the report is allocated a score based on the levelof performance as follows: Excellent- 100, Very Good- 75,Acceptable- 50, Needs Attention- 0, NA- Not Assessed (NA -Does not affect the Progress Score)As you can see the highest possible score of 100 would beachieved by a student who is rated ‘Excellent’ in every area inevery subject. How do I know what a goodProgress Score is?Excellent (Above 90)Students achieving above 90 on their Progress Scores areconsidered to be performing at a very high level. These studentsare acknowledged in the parent ENews and the college is lookingto introduce other rewards for high performing students.Average (5o to 70)Students achieving at this level are performing above the minimumstandard, but still have significant room for improvement. A closelook at the Progress Report will show strengths and weaknesses.Discussion with classroom teachers should be undertaken todiscuss strategies for improving identified areas of weakness.Under- Performing (30 to 50 )Students performing at this level are below the minimum expectedlevel of achievement. Consistently performing at this level willprobably lead to failing units of work. Discussion with classroomteachers should be undertaken to discuss strategies for improvingidentified areas of weakness. Learning Group Leaders will contactparents of students with major concerns. Students with ProgressScores below 50 are not permitted to participate in Co-curriculaactivities.At Risk (Less than 30)Students are performing well below average and are in immediatedanger of failing their studies. All students performing at this levelwill have their parents contacted by the school to discuss howsignificant improvements can be made. What do I do if I am concerned aboutmy child’s Progress Score?Examine your child’s Progress Report closely. Look for strengthsand weaknesses. Look for patterns, for example, is there aproblem in all subjects in effort? If so what does the child need toimprove? Is this problem in one subject or many?By reflecting closely on your child’s report, you will be ableto have a more specific and informed discussion with his/herteachers about how to improve. The focus of these reports is onimprovement- What needs to be done to improve? The ProgressReports are only an indication help to realise where your strengthsand weaknesses and what sorts of conversations need to takeplace with their teachers.Very Good (70 to 90 )Students achieving above 70 or more on their Progress Scoresare considered to be performing at a high level. Students withProgress Scores above 70 will be permitted to go home duringVET private study with parent permission.8DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE - E-NEWS

What does “Tasks not submitted”mean? In all subjects students are expected to complete learning tasks. This section of the report indicates if the student has not submittedone or more tasks. These are tasks not submitted when the reportwas written. Some of these tasks may have since been completedbut they were overdue at the time the report was written. How do I find out more informationabout the “Tasks not submitted”?Students will already have details of the tasks. Staff use variousmeans of communicating details of tasks to students. These includeMoodle or email. If students are unaware of the tasks that needto be submitted they should see the teacher concerned. If parentswant more details of tasks not submitted they can contact teachersby phone, email or attend Parent Student Teacher Interviews at theend of Term 1 and Term 3.What does the attendance datamean?Teachers mark attendance each lesson.• Present: Is the percentage of classes attended by the student. This figure includes extra-curricular activities like sport, excursions, work placements and VET. The college target forattendance is 95%.• Approved Absence: Is the percentage of classes where thestudent was absent but parents have notified the college.• Unapproved Absence: Is the percentage of classes where thestudent was absent and parents have not notified the college.• Late: Is the number of times a student has been recorded asbeing late to class.• Out of Uniform: Is the number of times the student has beenrecorded out of uniform. If you would like more information on attendance you haveaccess to your child’s complete attendance record on eworkspace.http://staff.drouinsc.vic.edu.au/ew6/parentsHow has the Progress Report changedin 2013?The “Tasks Set” column on the report has now been replaced by a“Task Completion” column.Task completion is calculated using the following formula%Task Completion = ((Tasks Set – Tasks not Submitted)/Tasks Set)*100For those of you not mathematically inclined this just converts theTasks Set and Tasks Not Submitted data into a percentage. We then convert this %Task Completion figure into Excellent, VG,Acceptable or Needs Attention. The conversion is:% Task Completion Covert To100% Excellent95% to 99% Very Good90% to 94% AcceptableLess than 90%Needs AttentionThe Progress Score is then calculated using the sameformula as always.Excellent = 100, Very Good = 75, Acceptable = 50, NeedsAttention = 0So Task Completion that previously counted for nothing in ProgressScore Calculation now counts for 20% of the score.I didn’t get a Progress Report inthe mail.Progress Reports were only mailed home to Year 7 students. In futureonly End of Semester Reports will be posted home in printed form.Progress Reports and End of Semester Reports are accessible onthe parent portal of e-workspace.Parents can access reports athttp://staff.drouinsc.vic.edu.au/ew6/parents9DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE - E-NEWS

CareersNewsWork ExperienceCritical Dates: The yellow form was dueback over a week ago, but we would stilllike every student to return theirs. Well doneto the organised ones who are up-to-date.Next step in the process is to completethe pink Arrangement Form. This is dueback by the end of Week 2 in Term 2,so the Term 1 holiday would be a greatopportunity to visit your employer and havethem complete their section of the form. Wemust stress that the pink form is an officialEducation Department document thatprovides insurance cover for students andemployers should an injury occur. It mustbe completed and signed by all partiesbefore a student is allowed to undertakework experience.FAQsThere has been some confusion regardingthe difference between Work Placement andWork Experience programmes.Work Placement is an on-going programmein which students work with an employerfor one (or in some cases two) days perweek for a term, semester or entire year.Work Placement is undertaken only bystudents doing an authorised VCAL or VIPprogramme. All Work Placements must besigned off by the school with an officialarrangement form (green). This is donethrough the Careers Centre. Students mustbe 15 years or older.Work Experience is a one-off, short-termprogramme, (usually one or two weeks). Theschool has a formal programme for studentsin Year 10 in the final week of Term 2. Allplacements must be signed off by the schoolwith an official arrangement form (pink). Thisis done through the Careers Centre. Studentsmust be 14 years or older, although studentsunder 15 must have special permission andemployers must have a police check andworking with children certificate.Helen Malone Kerrie Wainwright and Pat DowtyDuke of Edinburghstudents visit “Aussie Disposals”The students of the Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh class visited the Warragul Aussie Disposals store for a talk on different technologies andthe type of equipment available for bushwalking. Russell the store manager was very interesting and shared his knowledge on the differentaspects of layering clothes, sleeping bags and rain jackets. He kindly gave all students a $10 gift voucher and spot prizes of $20 vouchers.Jade Talbot was lucky enough to win the sleeping bag stuffing competition and scored herself a new -10 degree sleeping bag.Thank you Russell for your time and effort, I know the students enjoyed the visit and will remember the information.Gita Walker15DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE - E-NEWS

DSC MOODLE GUIDE FOR PARENTSThis is what the login screen looks like. You will need your child’s username and password to get in. The username is a code that has the firstthree letters of their surname and then four numbers, e.g. FAN0001. The password was given to them when they got their computers.Once you’ve logged in, you land here:On this page, you can find a lot of useful information and links to further useful information. Generally, the topsection has links to forums we are asking the kids to contribute to, information we want the whole school tohave and the link to the student handbook (this is where kids can access the information that used to be in thefront of the planner). The upcoming events shows due dates and school events that are scheduled for the next seven days. The calendar shows a snapshot of what is on this month – pink means due dates for Moodle courses andgreen means school events. Hovering over the date will show the item(s) on that day. Clicking on the monthwill allow you to add new events.Further down the page, my courses shows all the classes your child is enrolled in. Each of the names is ahyperlink that will take you into the course itself, where you will find resources, activities and the gradebook.Once inside a course, you can browse the activities and resources and see what has been happening inclass, or you can check out what work your child has done, how they went and what is still due.16DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE - E-NEWS

Clicking on grades will take you there. This is either on the settings menu which may be on one side or mightbe ‘docked’ to the left hand side of the screen. Hovering your mouse over docked tabs will expand them. The gradebook has all kinds of useful information. This gradebook shows that so far this semester, three tasks are expected to have been done and they have been marked by the teacher. Each taskused the same grade range (from inacceptable to magnifique) and two of them have rubrics attached that will give more detailed feedback than justthe comment. Clicking on the name of the task will take you to that rubric.
