Applied ExperienceIntroducing the AppliedExperience CommitteeBy April Green, AACIMember, Applied Experience CommitteeThe <strong>Appraisal</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Canada</strong>’s (AIC’s)Applied Experience Committee (AEC)became a standing committee <strong>of</strong> theAIC Board <strong>of</strong> Directors in June 2010. The purpose<strong>of</strong> the AEC is to advise the Board on all mattersregarding the Applied Experience and Mentoringprograms for the <strong>Institute</strong>’s AACI and CRAdesignations. Currently, the AEC is comprised<strong>of</strong> two AACIs, two CRAs, a Candidate member,a representative from the University <strong>of</strong> BritishColumbia (UBC), a provincial affiliate liaison anda Board liaison, with cross <strong>Canada</strong> representationfrom Nova Scotia to British Columbia.As a new standing committee, we would liketo inform members <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> the responsibilities<strong>of</strong> the AEC, as well as the steps Candidatesare required to take to complete the AppliedExperience program (AEP).What are the responsibilities <strong>of</strong> the AEC?The AEC’s responsibilities are to propose policiesand initiatives with respect to:• all aspects <strong>of</strong> the AEP including:• Applied Experience examination (AE exam):- exam questions- exam reviewers• Pr<strong>of</strong>essional competency interview:- training for interviewers- questions- consistency• Website resources related to AEP• The AIC Mentoring program:• mentor training program• performance measurements <strong>of</strong> thementor and mentee• Availability <strong>of</strong> mentorsWhat are the steps tocomplete the AEP program?1. Formal enrolment in the AEP takes place throughan application filed with the Candidate’s provincialaffiliate <strong>of</strong>fice. This includes submission<strong>of</strong> a written plan to complete the experiencerequirements in a working environment thatpromotes the acquisition <strong>of</strong> critical pr<strong>of</strong>essionalcompetencies under the guidance <strong>of</strong> a mentor.The plan should demonstrate how the Candidatewill achieve breadth and depth <strong>of</strong> experience inthe application <strong>of</strong> the First Principles <strong>of</strong> Value invaried and increasingly complex assignmentsand must include written confirmation <strong>of</strong> thementor’s commitment to the program.“The purpose <strong>of</strong> the AEC is to advise the Board onall matters regarding the Applied Experience andMentoring programs for the <strong>Institute</strong>’s AACI andCRA designations.”2. Completion <strong>of</strong> a minimum <strong>of</strong> one year <strong>of</strong>mentored experience within the last twoyears preceding the application <strong>of</strong> sittingthe CRA designation AE exam, or a minimum<strong>of</strong> two years within the last four yearspreceding the application <strong>of</strong> sitting the AACIdesignation AE exam3. Application for designation, including the finalreport on the mentored experience and thecertification <strong>of</strong> readiness by the mentor, alongwith documentation supporting completion <strong>of</strong>education and curriculum requirements.4.
