Shaping a Full‐Spectrum Naval Force February 2010CIVILIAN PERSONNEL<strong>DON</strong> civilians support the mission and daily functions ofthe <strong>Navy</strong> and Marine Corps, and are an integral part ofthe total workforce. The Department’s civilian personnelconstitute the cadre of corporate knowledge necessary tosustain and support operations. From wage gradeworkers to renowned scientists, a versatile and agileworkforce is required to meet this challenge. Today’scivilian personnel are employed in a variety of fieldsincluding installation management; research anddevelopment; engineering and acquisition; medical; Fleetactivities; logistics; depot maintenance; and administrative support. The majority ofthese functions are financed by the Operation and Maintenance appropriations andthe <strong>Navy</strong> Working Capital Fund.
