CENTAFLEX ® -DFlexible Flange CouplingsElastische FlanschkupplungenCatalog CF-D-10-04Power TransmissionLeading by innovation

CENTAFLEX series DThe CENTAFLEX coupling seriesD are very reliable, well proven couplingsfor generator sets, centrifugalpumpsets and other similar drives.Within a few short years, thesecouplings have gained a considerableportion of the market and withmore than 50.000 units in operation, they belong amongst the topranking couplings for the gen-setmarket.This range was purposely designedfor Diesel driven generator andsimilar drives. The couplings aresimple and robust in design followingthe well-proven design principles ofthe claw coupling with purely compressionstressed rubber elements. In the development of the seriesD coupling, particular importancewas attached to the following criteria:a) Generous dimensioning of therubber elements to ensure verylow specific stressb) Slim configuration of the claws byattention to the material selectionand by careful generation of theirshape to allow a long elasticlength of the rubber elements. This permits relatively largeangles of twist of 3°-5° at nominaltorque (depending on size). The resulting characteristics providea range of couplings with relativelylow torsional stiffness. The criticalrotational speeds (resonances) ofthe drive, even when the engine hasfew cylinders, are usually placedbelow the operation speed of thedrive. By using elements of variousshorehardnesses it is possible tofurther adjust the resonance speedand torque characteristics so that agood torsional vibration situation isgenerally achieved with commercialengines and generators. The couplings are designed asstandard to mount direct to SAEstandard flywheels, but in additionspecial designs for non-standardflywheels are readily available.Important areasof application:The CENTAFLEX Series D is acoupling of medium stiffness (torsionalangle at rated torque of about 3-5°), which is usually used for driveswith overcritical operation, i.e. theworking speeds are above the mainresonance speed. The secondaryinertia, therefore, should not be toosmall and working speed should notbe too low.Such conditions are normallyprovided in drives for gensets, pumpingsets, blowers etc.The coupling is suitable for flangemounted and non-flange mountedsets (please see allowable misalignment, page 4).If the set is not flange-mounted,then the engine should not be placedon flexible mounts, becausethese get a permanent set as timepasses and this results in greatermisalignment. In this case, werecommend mounting both the engineand driven unit rigidly on a commonframe and installing this frameon flexible mounts.Importantcharacteristicsand advantages:* simple, robust, safe in operation, compact, non-lubricated, fail safe* generously dimensioned, lowstress, rubber in compression elements, air cooled* carefully tuned torsional stiffnessto provide favourable torsionalvibration characteristics, availablewith different shorehardness elements, progressive stiffness curve* dampens vibrations and shocks, accepts axial, radial and angularmisalignments* simple installation, even with flangemounted driven units since thecouplings are "blind fitting"* widely variable design for all standardand non-standard fittingdimensions* competitively priced and readilyavailable from stock.2

Design componentsThe flange part (item 1) is dimensionedto correspond to the most commonflywheel dimensions to complywith SAE standard J620. In addition, there are numerous special designsfor non-standard flywheels.Due to the special manufacturingmethods employed, it is possible tovirtually make any flywheel connectioneconomical. The hub (item 2) on the output or drivenside, is manufactured in twolengths, except sizes 425 and 560.With the short hub, the couplingmounting dimensions correspond toDIN 6281 (fitting dimensions forgenerators and reciprocating engines). The long hub is intended for othernon-standard mounting dimensions.By shortening the long hub, it will ofcourse be possible to achieve anyintermediate mounting dimension.Design sizesThe CENTAFLEX series D couplingscomprise six design sizes fornominal torques from 250 to 40.000Nm. This range will in practice caterfor all Diesel engines from 3 cylindersupwards to include ratings up to5.000 kW (approx. 6800 HP) at 1500rpm.Materials :Rubber Elements:Standard design: NBRSpecial synthetic rubber compoundto provide oil resistant, abrasionresistant elements.Allowable temperatures-25 up to +90°C-50° with special materialTemperature factor: see diagram onpage 7Shorehardnesses: 50, 60 and 75Shore A, dependant upon torsionalstiffness required.Special qualities of rubber elementscan be provided where sufficientquantities are envisaged.Flange (item 1)Steel or similar material of 400N/mm² approximate tensile strength.Hub (item 2)Nodular cast iron (GGG50) inMeehanite Quality SF 500.Alternative couplings :As an alternative to the series Dcouplings, we also have our CENTA-MAX range of highly flexible couplings. Both these ranges allow difficultapplications such as misfiring or flikker-freelight to be correctly engineered.Furthermore, the CENTAMAXcouplings are free of backlash andprovide overload protection. The basic difference: the CENTA-FLEX series D has a progressivestiffness characteristic, whereasCENTAMAX has a linear one.The CENTAMAX series coversthe range from small 1-cylinder enginesup to engines with many cylindersand about 6000 kW capacity(catalogue CM).For small Diesel engines with 1 or2 cylinders (and some 3 cylinderengines) we recommend our originalwell-proven CENTAFLEX series Ahighly flexible couplings (catalogueCF-A). We supply complete couplingkits for such engines with, in somecases, additional flywheel masses inorder to ensure proper control of torsionalvibrations and flicker-free light. We thus offer a comprehensiverange of couplings for generator drivesfrom small single cylinder enginesof flow power up to engines ratedat 2.500 kW.Furthermore we have the broadexperience and know-how for applicationengineering and calculation oftorsional vibrations with our owncomputer program. It will be worth your while totalk to the CENTA engineers. Our"know how" guarantees advice, based on field experience, that willprovide couplings which are completelysatisfactory in service.CENTAFLEX, CENTAMAX, CENTALOC are registeredtrademarks of CENTA Antriebe.3

CENTAFLEX series Dcoupling selection fordiesel engine drivengenerator drivesWe have prepared selectioncharts for CENTAFLEX-D couplingsto suit engines from the followingmanufacturers amongstothers:CaterpillarCumminsDAFDaimler BenzFiat AifoFordGM Detroit DieselHatzKHD - DeutzMANMWMPerkins Rolls RoyceSaab ScaniaVolvo PentaVWThese charts contain, amongstother details, the engine type, engineflywheel number, coupling sizeand shorehardness, minimum andmaximum limiting values Jgmin andJgmax for mass moment of inertiaof generators.Where the mass moment ofinertia of the generator to be drivenis within the limits of J, thedrive is satisfactory with regardto torsional vibration, and thereis no need for individual torsionalvibration calculation calculationsto be made (disregardingengine drive with intermittentlyoperating cylinders).By a simple comparison of figurestherefore, engineers are able toquickly ascertain whether or not thetorsional vibration situation is correct.A perfect torsional vibrationsituation is the most important conditionfor smooth operation andlong service life of any flexiblecoupling. It is therefore, in your interestto make this easy check (orallow us to do so) for each individualcase.SelectionFor other applications and for generatorswhose mass moment of inertiais outside the stated limits, werequest that full details of the proposeddrives are sent to us. We canthen carry out, free of charge, a torsionalvibration calculation with theaid of our computer. The design ofthe CENTAFLEX series D couplingsis such that we can frequentlycarry out a simple modification tothe standard coupling to procedurea satisfactory drive installation.NOTE: Older technical literaturefrequently quotes the value GD²(Kpm²) for inertia in place of thenew inertia unit J(kgm²).2 D² GD²J=m ⋅r= m ⋅ = (kgm²)4 4i.e. the numerical value of GD²(Kpm²) should be divided by 4 inorder to obtain the numericalvalues of J(kgm²).Should you wish to design thecoupling yourself, then it is importantto follow the procedure given instandard DIN 740 sheet 2. The lowdesign stress induced in the rubberelements permit the engine torqueto closely match the nominal torquerating of the coupling, but in generala minimum operation factor of1,5 should be used.Where:T KN ≥ T M x 1,5T KN = nominal torque of thecouplingT M = Maximum torque of theengineAll necessary coupling data for torsionalvibration calculations is statedin this catalogue.BalancingIf nothing else has been agreed, the couplings are normally balancedas follows:All flanges 1 of size 350 with dimensionsaccording to SAE 14 (466,7∅)and larger. All hubs 2 of sizes 350 and 425 ifdelivered with finished bore andkeyway. We dynamically balance in oneplane with quality Q6,3 for 1800rpm.ClassificationThe couplings can be supplied inaccordance with the requirementsof the leading classification societies. However, if this is required, itmust be specified at the time of theinitial enquiry and when ordered. The couplings have general typeapproval from the following societies. Please ask for details.Bureau VeritasDet Norske VeritasGermanischer LloydLloyds Register of ShippingRINAFor couplings which are to be classified,we need the following data:Name of societyMain or auxiliary driveTechnical data of the engineTechnical data of the generatorShipownerName of the shipyardShipyard no.MisalignmentThe couplings can accommodatethe following maximum misalignment:angular: 1 degreeradial : 0.5 mm2axial : ±1These values for angular and radialmisalignment are based on 1000rpm. For other speeds convertaccording to the following diagram.Since radial and angular misalignmentcauses relative movementeach revolution, it is advisable tohave the best possible alignmentespecially on higher speed installationsto ensure long coupling lifeand smooth running.Permissible angular and radial misalignmentis dependant upon the speed when utilisingthe nominal torque capacity.4
