Advanced Military Training<br />
Students enrolled in Military Science classes may volunteer for the following U.S.<br />
Army specialty schools as quotas become available. Special requirements and<br />
prerequisites must be met.<br />
• Airborne Training<br />
• Air Assault Training<br />
• Mountain Warfare School<br />
• Northern Warfare School<br />
Requirements for Admission<br />
Basic Course: None.<br />
Advanced Course: Completion <strong>of</strong> basic course, Leadership Training Camp, or prior<br />
service.<br />
• Pass the Army physical fitness test, and meet the Army’s height and weight<br />
standards.<br />
• Permission <strong>of</strong> the Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Military Science.<br />
• Be in good academic standing with the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
• Meet Army medical standards<br />
Requirements for Commissioning<br />
• Completion <strong>of</strong> a baccalaureate or advanced degree.<br />
• Completion <strong>of</strong> an approved three-credit Military History course.<br />
• Meet Army medical standards.<br />
• Completion <strong>of</strong> the advanced ROTC course.<br />
• Completion <strong>of</strong> advanced summer camp normally between Junior and Senior<br />
year.<br />
• Pass Army physical fitness test.<br />
• Agree to fulfill a service obligation to serve as a commissioned <strong>of</strong>ficer on active<br />
duty, in the Army Reserve, or in the Army National Guard.<br />
• Pass Army swim test.<br />
Military Science Scholarships<br />
<strong>The</strong> Army ROTC has four-year scholarships available to high school seniors.<br />
Additionally, there are three- and two-year scholarships available on a competitive<br />
basis to students attending the <strong>University</strong>, whether or not they are enrolled in<br />
ROTC when applying for the scholarship. <strong>The</strong>se scholarships provide tuition, fees,<br />
$900 per year for texts, and $250-$400 per month allowance to the student for up<br />
to 10 months <strong>of</strong> the school year. Scholarship students may spend three to four<br />
years on active duty. <strong>University</strong> free room and board scholarships are available on<br />
a competitive basis. A 2.5 GPA must be maintained.<br />
Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) <strong>2005</strong>-<strong>2006</strong> 99<br />
Uniforms and Textbooks<br />
Military textbooks for all ROTC courses and equipment for military training are<br />
provided free by the Department <strong>of</strong> Military Science. Uniforms are issued free to<br />
all students while enrolled in the program, but must be returned.<br />
Financial Allowances<br />
An advanced course cadet and scholarship students are paid a non-taxable<br />
allowance <strong>of</strong> $350-$400 per month for up to 10 months <strong>of</strong> the school year. A student<br />
attending basic summer camp or advanced camp is paid for travel expenses,<br />
meals, housing, and a salary.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Military Science may also award cash stipends to students who<br />
excel in their academic studies. Stipends are based on academic merit, participation,<br />
and scholarship winners<br />
<strong>The</strong> starting salary for a newly commissioned active duty <strong>of</strong>ficer is approximately<br />
$38,000 per year which increases 15 percent per year on average for the next<br />
four years. Officers receive 30 days paid vacation per year.<br />

PROGRAMS<br />
Simultaneous Membership<br />
Program (SMP)<br />
Members <strong>of</strong> the Reserves or National Guard who are enrolled full-time in the<br />
<strong>University</strong> may enroll in advanced ROTC if they apply for SMP membership<br />
through their unit, are accepted by the Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Military Science, and meet all<br />
other admission requirements for the advanced course (MS III and MS IV).<br />
Commissioning may occur upon completion <strong>of</strong> the advanced ROTC course, and<br />
the member can elect to serve as an <strong>of</strong>ficer in the Reserves or National Guard.<br />
An SMP member receives $350 tax-free per month while in ROTC, is promoted<br />
to an E-5 <strong>of</strong>ficer trainee in the reserve/guard unit and receives E-5 pay, and may<br />
receive an additional $350 from the Guard, if qualified.<br />
Army Nurse Program<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> has been selected as a primary participant in the U.S.<br />
Army Cadet Command Partnership in Nursing Education program (PNE).<br />
• Freshmen and sophomores may enter the Army Nurse Program upon permission<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Military Science.<br />
• <strong>University</strong> free room and board nurse scholarships are available to all Army<br />
ROTC nurse scholarship winners.
