Amount <strong>of</strong> Refund – Credit<br />

Amount <strong>of</strong> refund is to be determined in accordance with the following regulations<br />

and subject to course instructor/advisor signature requirements contained in<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>'s <strong>of</strong>ficial withdrawal policy:<br />

• In full<br />

– if the <strong>University</strong> cancels the course;<br />

– if the <strong>University</strong> does not permit the student to enroll or continue except for<br />

disciplinary reasons. No refund will be granted to a student dismissed or suspended<br />

for disciplinary reasons;<br />

– if the student dies before or during the term; is drafted into military service by<br />

the United States; is called to active duty; or if the student enlists in the<br />

National Guard or Reserve prior to the beginning <strong>of</strong> the term. Notice <strong>of</strong> induction<br />

or orders to active duty is required if the student is called to active duty. A<br />

student who enlists voluntarily for active duty should see “in part” below.<br />

• In part<br />

– if a student requests <strong>of</strong>ficial withdrawal, the following refund percentages<br />

apply:<br />

If 6.667% <strong>of</strong> class attended — 100% refund<br />

If 13.333% <strong>of</strong> class attended — 70% refund<br />

If 20% <strong>of</strong> class attended — 50% refund<br />

If 26.667% <strong>of</strong> class attended — 30% refund<br />

If 33.333% <strong>of</strong> class attended — 20% refund<br />

Greater than 33.33% <strong>of</strong> class attended — 0% refund<br />

• refunds for course sections are based in class length. <strong>The</strong> courses which have<br />

not been scheduled consistent with the standard 15 week fall/spring/summer<br />

semester will also be handled on a prorated basis according to the number <strong>of</strong><br />

days <strong>of</strong> the section (class, institute, workshop) which has passed prior to <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

withdrawal compared to the number <strong>of</strong> days said section has been scheduled to<br />

meet. If a drop occurs on class day, it is counted as a day attended for the purpose<br />

<strong>of</strong> refund.<br />

• Refunds will be determined as <strong>of</strong> the date <strong>of</strong> formal withdrawal unless pro<strong>of</strong> is<br />

submitted that circumstances beyond control <strong>of</strong> the student, e.g., hospital<br />

confinement, prevented the filing <strong>of</strong> the formal withdrawal earlier, in which<br />

case the refund will be determined as <strong>of</strong> said circumstance. <strong>The</strong> student<br />

assumes responsibility for filing for a refund.<br />

• Refunds will be mailed as soon as possible. Refund checks are subject to<br />

deduction for any amount owed to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> by the student.<br />

Refund Policy for Noncredit Courses<br />

If a non-credit course is canceled by <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>, a full refund will be<br />

issued. Withdrawal requests received up to three (3) business days prior to the<br />

first class meeting will result in a full refund less a $10 processing charge, or an<br />

opportunity to transfer to another course. <strong>The</strong>reafter, withdrawal requests<br />

received up to the beginning <strong>of</strong> the second class meeting will receive a 50%<br />

refund. No refunds are issued after the second day <strong>of</strong> classes. Exceptions to this<br />

policy are noted in the non-credit schedule <strong>of</strong> classes. Substitutions may also be<br />

accepted in lieu <strong>of</strong> a refund.<br />

Refunds for non-credit courses are determined by the date the withdrawal request<br />

is received. <strong>The</strong> refund period cannot be extended if the student fails to attend the<br />

first class. Charge cards and refund checks will be processed promptly. Parking permits<br />

must be returned to the Continuing Education <strong>of</strong>fice to receive a refund.<br />

Residence Hall Refunds<br />

Refund/Release and Forfeiture Policy<br />

A Contract for Housing Accommodations and Food Services at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Akron</strong> which is terminated by the student, or otherwise terminated by <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>, is subject to the following refund provisions:<br />

• A full refund <strong>of</strong> paid room and board fees and the prepayment under the following<br />

circumstances:<br />

- Graduation <strong>of</strong> the STUDENT from <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>.<br />

- Academic dismissal <strong>of</strong> the STUDENT from <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>.<br />

- Non-attendance or complete withdrawal by the STUDENT from <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> prior to the start <strong>of</strong> the Contract term (except the<br />

prepayment which shall be forfeited). <strong>The</strong> prepayment will be refunded<br />

for new entering students and new transfer student when<br />

notification <strong>of</strong> intent to break Contract is received prior to the 15th <strong>of</strong><br />

May for the following fall semester and the 15th <strong>of</strong> October for<br />

Contracts initiated for spring semester; or.<br />

- Mandatory or recommended participation in academic programs <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> requires the STUDENT to commute regularly<br />

beyond the <strong>Akron</strong> metropolitan area (i.e., student teaching or co-op<br />

assignments). At time <strong>of</strong> cancellation, documentation from the<br />

<strong>University</strong> department affiliated with the program will be required.<br />

• A partial refund <strong>of</strong> paid room and board fees, except the prepayment fee,<br />

once occupancy has been established (e.g., acceptance <strong>of</strong> room keys and/or<br />

signing occupancy document) will be prorated beginning on the date the STU-<br />

DENT <strong>of</strong>ficially surrenders use <strong>of</strong> UNIVERSITY housing and returns all appropriate<br />

keys (room and apartment keys) to UNIVERSITY staff and satisfied<br />

UNIVERSITY-mandated housing separation requirements and procedures<br />

under the following circumstances:<br />

- Cancellation <strong>of</strong> the entire Contract term after the start <strong>of</strong> the fall<br />

semester and subsequent spring semester.<br />

- Cancellation <strong>of</strong> a single semester Contract after the start <strong>of</strong> that<br />

semester.<br />

• A partial refund <strong>of</strong> paid room and board fees when the STUDENT has fulfilled<br />

fall semester obligations and breaches the Contract for spring semester,<br />

except when under any dismissal or suspension. <strong>The</strong> STUDENT shall<br />

pay, an administrative fee for breach <strong>of</strong> the terms <strong>of</strong> the Contract, an<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> $200.<br />

<strong>The</strong> STUDENT shall not be liable for further forfeitures and shall be released <strong>of</strong><br />

further financial liability beyond the date <strong>of</strong> termination as per the<br />

refund/release and the forfeiture policy if the <strong>University</strong>, in its sole discretion,<br />

terminates the Contract:<br />

— For reasons related to orderly operation <strong>of</strong> the Residence Hall, or for reasons<br />

relating to the health, physical, or emotional safety and well-being<br />

<strong>of</strong> the STUDENT, or for reasons relating to the health and well-being <strong>of</strong><br />

the persons or property <strong>of</strong> other students, faculty, staff or UNIVERSITY<br />

property.<br />

— In the event that the STUDENT is dismissed or suspended from <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> for disciplinary reasons in accordance with laws or<br />

rules and regulations <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees, or, if the STUDENT is<br />

placed on terms <strong>of</strong> disciplinary probation in accordance with laws or<br />

rules and regulations <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees, whereby such terms <strong>of</strong><br />

probation prohibit the STUDENT from residing in UNIVERSITY housing<br />

accommodations.<br />

— <strong>The</strong> STUDENT is financially responsible for fees incurred through the<br />

date <strong>of</strong> such termination, dismissal, suspension or probation or until the<br />

STUDENT has completed the check-out process with the appropriate<br />

UNIVERSITY employee, which ever date is later.<br />

— Notice requirements. All notices <strong>of</strong> intent to break this Contract must<br />

be submitted to the Department <strong>of</strong> Residence Life and Housing. If the<br />

STUDENT is under the age <strong>of</strong> 18, the written notification <strong>of</strong> termination<br />

must be co signed by the STUDENT’S parent or legal guardian.<br />

Refund Schedule<br />

Room and board refunds/charges will be determined by a per diem formula predicated<br />

on the date the STUDENT <strong>of</strong>ficially surrenders use <strong>of</strong> UNIVERSITY housing<br />

and has returned/submitted room/apartment keys to UNIVERSITY staff and satisfied<br />

UNIVERSITY-mandated housing separation requirements and procedures.<br />

No Show Policy<br />

<strong>The</strong> UNIVERSITY will hold the STUDENT’S assignment until close <strong>of</strong> business on<br />

Wednesday <strong>of</strong> the first week <strong>of</strong> each semester. At that time the room will be<br />

reassigned and the STUDENT’S Contract will be canceled and the prepayment<br />

shall be forfeited.<br />
