Medical Insurance Coverage<br />
All international students are required to provide pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> major medical health<br />
insurance coverage that meets the minimum established requirements set forth<br />
by the <strong>University</strong> before they will be permitted to register for classes. While it is<br />
not mandatory, you may purchase the student health insurance plan <strong>of</strong>fered<br />
through the <strong>University</strong> for your convenience. <strong>The</strong> insurance coverage must remain<br />
in effect during a student’s enrollment at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>.<br />

International Student Orientation<br />
International students are required to attend an International Student Orientation<br />
program that takes place during the two weeks before classes begin. Orientation<br />
information will be mailed to students along with the Certificate <strong>of</strong> Eligibility. <strong>The</strong><br />
orientation fee is $60.<br />

Financial and Immigration<br />
Documentation<br />
Information on estimated expenses can be found on the form “Declaration and<br />
Certification <strong>of</strong> Finances” (DCF) included in the application packet. This form must<br />
be completed and returned to the Office <strong>of</strong> International Programs along with<br />
other application materials. A letter <strong>of</strong> support from your sponsor may be substituted<br />
for the DCF.<br />
Undergraduate tuition and living expenses for the <strong>2005</strong>-<strong>2006</strong> academic year will<br />
be approximately $24,000. Tuition is subject to change.<br />
Applicants planning to arrive to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> on student visa (F-1/J-1)<br />
must submit the DCF form and original financial documents required by this form.<br />
According to U.S. Government regulations, financial documents must demonstrate<br />
that the student has enough immediately available funds to meet all<br />
expenses <strong>of</strong> the first year <strong>of</strong> program and adequate funding will be available for<br />
each subsequent year <strong>of</strong> study. Documents must be dated not earlier than one<br />
year from start <strong>of</strong> program.<br />
Once the student has been admitted and his/her financial documents are sufficient,<br />
the Office <strong>of</strong> International Programs will issue the Certificate <strong>of</strong> Eligibility<br />
(I-20/DS-2019) needed for the student to apply for an F-1/J 1 visa.<br />
Students on F-1/J-1 visa transferring to <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> from another U.S.<br />
College/university without leaving the U.S.A. will be eligible for transfer only if<br />
they maintain a valid nonimmigrant status. <strong>The</strong> I-20/DS-2019 will be issued upon<br />
submission <strong>of</strong> the document proving their valid status and meeting requirements<br />
mentioned above. A new I-20/DS-2019 must be obtained before the first semester<br />
starts.<br />
Scholarships<br />
A limited number <strong>of</strong> June Thomas Rogers Scholarships are available to undergraduate<br />
international students. All interested applicants should contact the<br />
Office <strong>of</strong> International Programs for further details or go to www.uakron.edu/oip.<br />
Note: Prospective undergraduate students should apply for the “New<br />
Undergraduate International Student Award. “ Continuing students should apply<br />
for the “International Understanding Award.”
