(all departments) will be directly admitted.<br />

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> welcomes international students and scholars and seeks<br />

to make their educational experience pleasing and meaningful. Each year, approximately<br />

750 international students from 80 countries pursue studies and research<br />

at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>.<br />

Admission Procedures for<br />

International Students<br />

International students may apply to begin their studies for the Fall (late August) or<br />

Spring (mid January) semesters, or for one <strong>of</strong> the three sessions <strong>of</strong> the Summer<br />

semester (May/June/July). Students should submit their applications at least three<br />

months prior to the semester for which they wish to begin their studies. (For<br />

scholarship consideration, read the information under the June Thomas Rogers<br />

section on the reverse side.) Applicants must be high school (secondary school)<br />

graduates with a minimum grade point average (GPA) <strong>of</strong> 2.3 on a 4.0 scale for<br />

standard admission. <strong>The</strong> following documents should be mailed to:<br />

Undergraduate Admission Application for International<br />

Students<br />

Fill in the application accurately and completely. Please type or print distinctly. <strong>The</strong><br />

permanent address should be the home country or legal residence. A copy <strong>of</strong> the<br />

passport page information should be enclosed. If you are currently in the United<br />

States, submit a copy <strong>of</strong> the visa page and both sides <strong>of</strong> the I-94. A $50.00 onetime<br />

non-refundable application fee must accompany this application. Application<br />

fees will not be deferred or waived. Make the check or money order payable to:<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>. If you are using a credit card, be sure that it is accepted in<br />

the United States. Type or clearly print the credit card number, expiration date,<br />

name as it appears on the card and the signature <strong>of</strong> the cardholder. Do not send<br />

cash.<br />

Transcripts<br />

Submit <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts or certified true copies from all high schools/secondary<br />

schools, universities/colleges and/or pr<strong>of</strong>essional schools that you have attended.<br />

Certified true copies must bear the <strong>of</strong>ficial stamp and signature <strong>of</strong> the appropriate<br />

academic <strong>of</strong>ficer. If the language <strong>of</strong> instruction for the institution is not English, an<br />

exact certified English translation must be provided also. Transcripts should indicate<br />

the grading key, grade point average (GPA) equivalent to a 4.0 scale, and institutional<br />

accreditation. Notarized copies are not true copies and are not acceptable.<br />

Students who have attended an academic institution in the United States must<br />

have the <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts submitted by that institution. If you are applying as a<br />

transfer student, have your academic advisor or the designated <strong>of</strong>ficial complete an<br />

International Student Advisor’s Report.<br />

Optional: International students concerned about transfer credit may choose to<br />

have their credentials evaluated by a third party. One such service is the World<br />

Degree Conferral<br />

Applicants must submit supporting documentation for all earned degrees indicated<br />

on the application. Provisional certificates may be accepted pending the award <strong>of</strong> a<br />

degree. High school/secondary school students must show pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> graduation<br />

before they will be permitted to register for their first semester. <strong>The</strong> same standards<br />

<strong>of</strong> authenticity for listed degrees/transcripts apply.<br />

English Language Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> requires students for whom English is not the native language to<br />

take either the Test <strong>of</strong> English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International<br />

English Language Testing System (IELTS). TOEFL applications may be obtained<br />

from bi-national agencies, United States Information Service (USIS) <strong>of</strong>fices, or from<br />

the Educational Testing Service (ETS). <strong>The</strong> IELTS is jointly administered by<br />

Cambridge (ESOL), British Council and IDP Education Australia. Undergraduate students<br />

must achieve a minimum TOEFL score <strong>of</strong> 173 (500 paper-based test) or a<br />

minimum IELTS score <strong>of</strong> 6.0. TOEFL and IELTS scores older than two years are<br />

invalid and unacceptable.<br />

Conditional Admission is <strong>of</strong>fered to students who are academically acceptable, but<br />

who have not yet obtained the level <strong>of</strong> English pr<strong>of</strong>iciency required for Full<br />

Admission. Students who meet this criteria may attend the <strong>University</strong>’s English<br />

Language Institute (ELI). Students enrolled in the ELI may not enroll for undergraduate<br />

Applicants who have satisfactorily completed nine months <strong>of</strong> full-time academic<br />

course work at a U.S. college/university and are in good standing at that institution<br />

or international students who have graduated from an Ohio high school and<br />

passed all parts <strong>of</strong> the Ohio Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency Test may have the TOEFL or IELTS<br />

requirement waived upon written request to and final approval from the Office <strong>of</strong><br />

International Programs.<br />

Note: Students who do not meet the English language pr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirement<br />

are not eligible for the June Thomas Rogers International Student Scholarship.<br />

SAT/ACT<br />

International students are not required to take the SAT nor the ACT for admission<br />

consideration, however, some scholarships do require one or both <strong>of</strong> these tests.<br />
