At the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) and Ocasek Natatorium<br />

(ONAT) there’s so much more to explore! We aim to foster campus and community<br />

relations and are committed to providing superior facilities, solid programming,<br />

and innovative ideas that enhance academic, recreational and leisure experiences.<br />

Amenities include: Leisure Pool, 30 person spa, 1/10 mile walking/jogging track,<br />

15,000 square feet <strong>of</strong> cardiovascular and strength training equipment, 5 multifunction<br />

gymnasiums, 2 group exercise studios, 53’ climbing rock, bouldering<br />

cave, Outdoor Adventure gear rentals and the Climbing Rock Café.<br />

Two multi purpose classrooms, the group exercise studios and gymnasiums can<br />

be converted for meeting rooms, speaking engagements, presentations, afterproms/after-hour<br />

and many other activities. Tables, chairs, podiums, LCD projectors,<br />

25’ screen and sound systems are available in each area. A karaoke system,<br />

a staging system, sumo wrestling, inflatable jousting, adult tricycles, batting<br />

cages, golf nets, putting greens and table tennis tables are available for rental.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Leisure Pool area includes a wet classroom, lazy river, Vortex, 2 lap lanes,<br />

multi-bubblers and a basketball hoop.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Aquatic Program invites you to take a break from the rigors <strong>of</strong> daily life and<br />

take a quick dip in the Leisure Pool and spa or a quick lap in the Ocasek<br />

Natatorium competition pool. A variety <strong>of</strong> programs are <strong>of</strong>fered for you to take<br />

part in such as; group swimming lessons, private and semi-private swimming<br />

lessons, kayaking classes, scuba classes, springboard diving lessons, stroke clinics,<br />

Intramural inner tube water polo, water polo club sports, water volleyball, or<br />

<strong>The</strong> Climbing Rock Café: Located just inside the front doors <strong>of</strong> the SRWC, the<br />

Climbing Rock Café <strong>of</strong>fers a variety <strong>of</strong> items. Vending machines are also available<br />

Fitness Services is designed to meet the fitness needs <strong>of</strong> each individual by creating<br />

a climate that motivates and promotes physical conditioning. <strong>The</strong> Fitness<br />

staff will deliver quality fitness services and programs by promoting a fun and<br />

inviting atmosphere, while treating members in a friendly, respectful manner. A<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> equipment is available for recreation and/or physical conditioning, including<br />

cardiovascular machines, adjustable weight machines, plate loaded equipment<br />

and free weights. An entertainment system is linked to all cardio equipment<br />

for your listening and viewing enjoyment while you work out. For more information<br />

<strong>The</strong> Group Exercise Program is developed to provide diverse exercise opportunities<br />

and services to members who wish to be involved in an exercise program<br />

facilitated in a group setting. <strong>The</strong> staff provides up-to-date quality instruction and<br />

high-energy motivation to the SRWC members in a correct and safe aerobics format.<br />

Group Exercise is provided through a variety <strong>of</strong> classes including yoga, kickboxing,<br />

aquatic exercise, core-training, flexibility and strength and endurance. For<br />

<strong>The</strong> Intramural Sports Program is designed to provide opportunities for students,<br />

faculty, and staff to participate in sport experiences. Among many other<br />

skills, this will help develop leadership and team building. <strong>The</strong> Intramural Sports<br />

Program allows the <strong>University</strong> community to participate in recreational activities in<br />

an organized competitive atmosphere. Our activities include: basketball, tennis,<br />

inner tube water polo, dodge ball, volleyball, and a variety <strong>of</strong> other activities. We<br />

aim to provide social relationships, good sportsmanship, and health and fitness<br />

maintenance. <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong> promotes organized recreational activities<br />

<strong>The</strong> Information/Sales Office provides basic supplies you may have forgotten to<br />

bring such as a lock for your locker. Year round, the SRWC is free for current<br />

students to utilize and the ONAT remains free for all current students, staff and<br />

faculty. Membership & Guest Pass opportunities are available for purchase at<br />

the Information/Sales Office. Cash, check, Master Card and Visa are accepted.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Outdoor Adventure Program invites you to experience vertical excitement<br />

on the 53.5’ indoor climbing wall or indulge your wild side on an Outdoor<br />

Adventure excursion. Outdoor seminars and clinics as well as programs such as<br />

backpacking, day hiking, camping, canoeing, and kayaking will provide the<br />

<strong>University</strong> community with all <strong>of</strong> their outdoor needs. <strong>The</strong> Outdoor Rental Center<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a comprehensive collection <strong>of</strong> gear with the highest quality outdoor equip-<br />

ment on the market. We are able to provide all <strong>of</strong> your equipment needs for backpacking,<br />

Wellness Services provides a variety <strong>of</strong> confidential evaluative tests that include<br />

physical fitness assessments, body composition, metabolic testing, and other<br />

health screenings. We support lifestyle changes through evaluation, education,<br />

structured classes, seminars, a resource library, and a knowledgeable staff to<br />

supply a means for expanding health knowledge. Relaxation massage and nutritional<br />

guidance are new services now available. Student pr<strong>of</strong>essional development<br />

through research, practice, and utilizing state <strong>of</strong> the art technology are also<br />

Natatorium (ONAT) are located on the South East corner <strong>of</strong> campus. <strong>The</strong> neighboring<br />

street corners <strong>of</strong> both facilities are Carroll, Union, Spicer and Vine. <strong>The</strong><br />

SRWC main entrance faces NW toward Memorial Hall, the SE/back entrance is<br />

<strong>of</strong>f Spicer Street/Lot 10 and the ONAT main entrance faces North toward the<br />

James A. Rhodes Arena.<br />

Parking: Lots 8 and 10 located on the South East corner <strong>of</strong> campus sit behind<br />

both the SRWC and ONAT facility. <strong>The</strong> cornering streets are Carroll, Union, Spicer<br />

THE STUDENT UNION<br />

<strong>The</strong> Student Union, located in the center <strong>of</strong> campus, is a department that oversees<br />

numerous functions <strong>of</strong> student life and student engagement, and serves the<br />

students, faculty, and staff. This facility also houses various food service facilities,<br />

meeting rooms, a movie theater, a game room, Computer Solutions — <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>’s computer technology store, a Zip Card <strong>of</strong>fice, the DocuZip<br />

copy center, a bank, a Ticketmaster outlet, the Information Center, Barnes &<br />

Noble Bookstore, Planet Underground, a DVD and CD store, student organization<br />

<strong>of</strong>fices and Starbucks C<strong>of</strong>feehouse. Visit our Web site at<br />

• Food Areas in the Student Union <strong>of</strong>fer a variety <strong>of</strong> food items. On the first<br />

level is Zee’s convenience store, which has a variety <strong>of</strong> items, including sundries<br />

items for the busy student. On the second level are Subway, the Sizzling<br />

Zone, the exciting Union Market and Starbucks C<strong>of</strong>feehouse.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> DocuZip Copy Center, located on the second level, <strong>of</strong>fers the following<br />

services: copying, including color, oversized and reduced copies; binding <strong>of</strong><br />

materials; mailing facilities for campus and U.S. mail; literature distribution;<br />

and class support files.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> Bookstore at <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>, located on the first level, is<br />

operated as a service <strong>of</strong> Barnes & Noble Bookstores, Inc. <strong>of</strong> New York City.<br />

Barnes & Noble operates 300 other college stores. <strong>The</strong> primary purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

the Bookstore is to make available books and supplies required for course<br />

work. In addition, the store also carries a wide range <strong>of</strong> classroom supplies,<br />

paperbacks, engineering and art supplies, photo supplies, greeting cards,<br />

<strong>University</strong> memorabilia and clothing.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> Student Union <strong>The</strong>atre, located on the second floor, screens first- and<br />

second-run movies as well as occasional sneak previews. <strong>The</strong> theater also<br />

hosts special events and performances.<br />

• Ticketmaster Center, located on the second floor, sells tickets to most<br />

events in northern Ohio, including Blossom Music Center, Public Hall and the<br />

Gund Arena. Over-the-counter sales include tickets to campus functions, sporting<br />

events and local shows.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> Information Center, located on the second floor, is operated seven days<br />

a week during the normal building operating hours. <strong>The</strong> Information Center<br />

staff can answer questions regarding department and student organizations,<br />

on-campus events, the Metro buses and the <strong>University</strong> Bus Loop. Laptops can<br />

be checked for use in the Union at the Information Center. <strong>The</strong> Information<br />

• Computer Solutions, located on the third level, is <strong>The</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Akron</strong>’s<br />

computer technology store. As an education reseller, personal computer hardware,<br />

peripherals, and s<strong>of</strong>tware are available at educational pricing. <strong>The</strong> store<br />

is a service for students, faculty and staff. In addition, the store is a point <strong>of</strong><br />

contact for other services, such as requesting a university network ID (UANet<br />

ID) or requesting a network connection in the residence halls.<br />

• <strong>The</strong> Game Room, located on the first floor, has a pool hall, bowling lanes and<br />

a video arcade. <strong>The</strong> bowling lanes feature Extreme glow-in-the-dark bowling.
