Fundamental information about the theory and practice <strong>of</strong> visual design as applied to surfaces,<br />

including composition, color and pictorial illusions with lecture and studio experience.<br />

Introduction to meaning <strong>of</strong> “design” and act <strong>of</strong> designing in real space. Study <strong>of</strong> naturally occurring<br />

form, structure and process.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> graphic design through lecture and studio work in a variety <strong>of</strong> media. An exploration<br />

214 INTRODUCTION TO SCREEN PRINTING 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 131, 144. Silk screen printmaking. <strong>The</strong>ory and use <strong>of</strong> stencil process, positive and<br />

negative block-out techniques, photo stencil, registration and printing procedures. Emphasis on<br />

aesthetic theory, technique and related history.<br />

215 INTRODUCTION TO RELIEF PRINTING 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 131, 144. Printmaking using found objects, synthetic materials, as well as traditional<br />

woodcut and linoleum engraving. Emphasis on aesthetic theory, technique and related history.<br />

Prerequisites: 131, 144. Intaglio printmaking using drypoint engraving, aquatint and s<strong>of</strong>t-ground<br />

Prerequisite: 145. Exploration <strong>of</strong> aesthetic factors influencing sculptural statements.<br />

223 SCULPTURE: STONE 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 222. Beginning-level lecture and studio course using both traditional hand tools for<br />

the creation <strong>of</strong> stone sculpture. History <strong>of</strong> the use <strong>of</strong> stone, evolution <strong>of</strong> stone working technology<br />

and contemporary artists working with stone.<br />

224 INSTALLATION ART 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 222. Lecture and studio course introducing the student to the medium <strong>of</strong> installation<br />

art, a major emphasis in the contemporary art scene. <strong>The</strong> history and evolution <strong>of</strong> installation<br />

art and its use by contemporary artists.<br />

231 DRAWING II 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 131. Continued investigation <strong>of</strong> basic drawing concepts. Introduction to drawing in<br />

color with further development <strong>of</strong> observation, design, technique and conceptual skills.<br />

233 FOUNDATION LIFE DRAWING 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 131. Perceptual problems in drawing from the life model. Study <strong>of</strong> skeletal, muscular,<br />

mechanical nature <strong>of</strong> human figure and application <strong>of</strong> this knowledge to the resolution <strong>of</strong><br />

aesthetic problems. (May be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> 6 credits)<br />

234 ANATOMY FOR ARTISTS 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 233. Studio/lecture experience in drawing and sculpture with an emphasis on<br />

human skeletal, muscular, and surface structure.<br />

243 INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 131, 144. Study <strong>of</strong> aesthetic and technical problems involved in painting.<br />

Emphasis on painting from observation, and understanding <strong>of</strong> color in painting.<br />

244 COLOR CONCEPTS 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 131 and 144. Lecture and studio experience giving information concerning perception<br />

<strong>of</strong> color, additive color phenomena <strong>of</strong> light, subtractive color phenomena <strong>of</strong> pigments<br />

and dyes, color notation systems and psychological effects <strong>of</strong> color.<br />

246 INTRODUCTION TO WATER-BASED MEDIA 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 131, 144. Experimentation with water-based media such as tempra, acrylic and<br />

gouache. (May be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> 6 credits)<br />

Prerequisites: 131 and 144. Introduction to airbrush painting techniques with water-based<br />

media. Projects progress from exercises to personal expression..<br />

Prerequisites: 233 and 246, or 248. Painting course with an emphasis on painting the figure from<br />

life. (May be repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> 9 credits)<br />

Prerequisites: 131, 144, 145, 233. Credit/noncredit course. Faculty review <strong>of</strong> art foundation studio<br />

254 INTRODUCTION TO CERAMICS 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 131, 144. Studio/lecture course exploring potentials <strong>of</strong> hand-building techniques in<br />

both sculptural and functional forms. Clay processing, glaze application and practical kiln firing.<br />

266 INTRODUCTION TO METALSMITHING 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 145, 144. Studio experience in which student is introduced to properties <strong>of</strong> metals,<br />

processes <strong>of</strong> silversmithing and design and production <strong>of</strong> jewelry.<br />

268 COLOR IN METALS 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 366. Introduction to a variety <strong>of</strong> techniques to achieve and/or combine color in metals.<br />

Techniques such as anodizing aluminum, enameling and the application <strong>of</strong> color resins and<br />

plastics will be explored.<br />

274 PHOTOGRAPHY I FOR NON-ART MAJORS 3 credits<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> photography through lecture, demonstration and studio work. An exploration and<br />

enrichment opportunity for the non-art major. No credit toward major in art.<br />

275 INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 131, 144. Lecture, studio and laboratory course. Techniques and aesthetics are<br />

studied using both 4x5 and 35mm cameras. A 35mm camera with full manual control is required.<br />

276 INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 275. Students are introduced to the numerous commercial applications <strong>of</strong> studio and<br />

location photography while working through a series <strong>of</strong> advertising related photographic projects.<br />

280 DIGITAL IMAGING 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 185 or 289. An exploration <strong>of</strong> contemporary digital image capture, manipulation,<br />

output and distribution, emphasizing digital image concepts, aesthetics and production.(May be<br />

repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> six credits)<br />

281 WEB PAGE DESIGN 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 280. Introduction to the process <strong>of</strong> web page development. With an emphasis on<br />

creative exploration, students develop, format, and test content for internet distribution. (May be<br />

repeated for a total <strong>of</strong> 6 credits)<br />

283 DRAWING TECHNIQUES 3 credits<br />

Prerequisites: 131 and 132. Includes advanced drawing and presentation techniques commonly<br />

used in graphic design. Various presentation and design problems will be encountered stressing<br />

use <strong>of</strong> selected drawing methods and processes.<br />

288 TYPOGRAPHY 2 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 184. Introduction to typographic design to communicate. Study <strong>of</strong> letterforms, history,<br />

comping skills, layout design and digital technology.<br />

289 PRODUCTION I 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 132. A computer- based course. Using industry-standard s<strong>of</strong>tware, students focus<br />

on incorporating type and image to produce comprehensive design solutions.<br />

300 ART SINCE 1945 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 101 or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor. Consideration <strong>of</strong> significant developments in visual<br />

art forms since World War II in architecture, sculpture, printing, photography, metal, textile,<br />

ceramics, printmaking and graphic design.<br />

301 MEDIEVAL ART 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 101 or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor. Painting, mosaics, architecture, sculpture, and luxury<br />

arts <strong>of</strong> medieval Europe from 4th through 14th centuries.<br />

302 ART IN EUROPE DURING THE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURIES 3 credits<br />

Prerequisite: 101 or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor. Analysis <strong>of</strong> major European examples <strong>of</strong> architecture,<br />

landscape design, painting, prints and sculpture from beginning <strong>of</strong> the 17th Century until<br />

approximately 1850.
